Are they releasing the entire game, or just an updated executable? What made the original so good was the soundtrack ( IMHO ), and I'd love to hear all my old favorites again.
Homer: I'm going to use all the power of my brain. ( image of donkey lying under a tree w/ flies )
Krusty: The dummy can't hurt you.. he's not even alive! He's dead! ( Kids screaming )
Krusty: All right, here's the deal. Every time you watch my show, I will send you... Fourty Dollars!! Lawyer: Checks will not be honored.
Krusty: ( after watching Worker and Parasite ) What the hell was that?
Brockman: Gabbo's language has no place on or off television, and that's my two cents........ hehe, that ought to hold those SOBs. ( New caption: Brockman in Trouble ) What the?!?
But it doesnt have superior drivers! Surely games would be released for Linux and all the gamers start to use Linux for games if it did have. But it doesnt. Not where speed is concerned anyway and thats what counts.
You seem to be under the false belief that technology is the deciding factor when game developers select a platform. It is not. The developer will go where it can reach the largest potential market so that they can profit from thier labors. That is why most games are still developed for Windows. Windows clearly has the larger market share among gamers' OSes, and so it offers the greatest potential profit.
The only way this can change for Linux is to get Linux onto more gamers' PCs. How to do that? You have to force them to install it. You have to offer them games that they really want to play, but they have to be Linux only titles. ( Or at least, released first for Linux. )
The Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld longstanding copyrights designed to protect the profits of songs, books and cartoon characters, a huge victory for Disney and other companies.
Like some evil brigade of Natzi Communist Al Queda Iraqis were trying to bring the American Capitalist System(TM) down. Thank god the justices stopped this attack on our country! Down with the public domain!
We are not allowed to publicly speak on behalf of the corporation. If I reveal the company I work for, some twisted lawyer could try to assert that I was making a public statement that reflected the views of my employer, and I could get sued.
While that's probably a long shot, I have too many bills to pay to start looking for another job. ( unless someone is hiring a C++ programmer;-)
I'm keeping the name to myself because I don't want to get fired, but trust me.. we're a major national player.
We support several platforms in our store... PS2, PS, X-Box, Game Cube, PC, GameBoy Advance/Color, N64, and Dreamcast. Our slowest moving platform out of them all is definatly the PC. The only PC stuff that moves are MMORPGs and The Sims. Sports titles on the PC are dead. We shrank our shelf-space for PC titles to make room for the other platforms. No one is buying PC hardware from us ( video cards, sound cards, network cards, joysticks ). None of it is moving this Christmas.
Meanwhile, all the consoles are hopping. You see... everyone's tried of all the problems you get playing PC games: Graphics too slow, Windows full of bugs, hard drive full, downloading patches, need a frickin network for multiplayer, etc. It's bullshit.
OR, you can shell out $200 and get a nice console w/ DVD functionality. Open tray, insert game, close tray, and that's it! You're off and playing. Games are no more expensive. They're bug-free compared to PC games. Want multiplayer? Buy a second gamepad.
PC games are collecting social security... and picking out thier casket and plot. They're not DEAD, but they are dying fast.
LOL, that link is so stupid! They pretend that they're trying to be "sensitive" by eliminating the Two Towers title, while plastering the "Two Towers" phrase all over the website. Not to mention that thier logo shows a trade center in flames... yeah, that's being sensitive alright.
when was the last time you saw someone rolling their own cigarette?
Last week. I have a friend and an Aunt who both roll thier own. My friend tells me he can roll about a carton of cigarettes for $9 ( that's tobacco, papers, and filters ), where buying a carton of national brand is about $35.
But more to the point, just because emulators CAN be used for illegal purposes dosen't mean they will be. By your estimation, WinAMP is evil because most people don't play thier own music. Where do we draw the line? Rolling Papers? Guns? Cars? ( Yes, you can use a car to commit many crimes. ) Knives? Baseball Bats? Pens? ( TONS of crimes are commited with a pen. )
The point is that you can't draw a line anywhere. If you can do one LEGAL thing with it, then it should be legal. And last I checked, there are legal purposes for emulators.
The boys an NASA pointed the Hubble space telescope at our 'third moon' today to confirm or deny the concept that it is space junk rather than a celestial body. The image hubble returned shocked the scientific community. Dr. Steven Beckwith, director of the Space Telescope Science Institute ( which carries out the scientific mission of the Hubble Space Telescope ), was quoted as saying, "My God, it's full of stars."
I know I shouldn't be, but I'm stunned that so many slashdotters are so quick to pounce on all KDE developers because of the comments made by a few people. Try checking out more comments before flaming volunteers, eh? Hell, even Gnomers are said to be concerned about the changes to thier environment, but I guess since it's slashdotted no one cares. ( Out of sight, out of mind. )
Personally, I think that if Red Hat:
1) Doesn't violate any licences
and
2) Notes any changes they made to either environment
Then I have no problem with it, and from what I've read on the Dot, most KDE developers seem to be thinking along these lines as well.
So, for everyone making negative comments, quit yer bashing! The very people you bash have probably done more to help the community than you ever will.
All spelling mistakes in this post were on purpose, so bite me.
call me a cynic. But, this whole freedom of choice thing can't be underscored.
Security and Privacy supersede freedom of choice when dealing with MY Social Security number and MY Driver's Licence.
With Open Source software, the government can make sure that it's software is secure by keeping a staff of programmers. With non-open source software, the government is at the publisher's mercy. Since the publisher's best interests != the government's best interests, this is a situation we should never be in.
For all you "Open Source Only Laws Are Bad" folks:
If you buy closed source products, you have NO idea if it has a fatal bug or security exploit, and you are at the company's mercy if you want something fixed. PERIOD.
I mean, Jesus people, THINK! What if you install the MicroBuss 5000 database software to store Social Security numbers and Drivers Licences, and then suddenly it gets hacked and all the data is compromised? Here's the quote from MicroBuss:
"Well, we knew about the exploit, but we didn't want to tell anyone until we found a fix for it. It's ready now, just purchase the upgrade to the 6000 series."
Don't laugh too much, this can really happen. Haven't any of you watched The Net? Granted, much of that was Hollywood, but backdoors are a reality. Is it really worth the risk for a minor economic boost? The answer is NO.
Of all the places, I didn't think I'd have to post something like this at Slashdot, but after reading the first dozen or so comments, I guess I was wrong.
I remember building model rockets back in the 8th grade. Mine wasn't the best painted, and it's fins weren't perfectly straight, but it flew and I had a lot of fun. I guess I needed this article to remind me of that. Thanks John ( and Slashdot ).
So, anyone have any links for someone looking to get into amature rockets?
However, why should *we* be the ones to move out? Huh? Both the US and the UK are (supposed to be) democratic nations. Isn't that the point of establishing a democracy in the first place? So that we don't have to leave, but instead can change the nation and government to better suit the people?
Maybe I'm too idealistic, but it seems to me that too many have given up on democracy really working (including myself often). The real test is that countries can change. That has happened in the past, if it can no longer happen, I think the fault lies more with the citizens than with the elected officials.
You make a very important point, but I personally have not lost faith in pure democracy. Rather, I have lost faith in:
1) Our paticular democratic implementations. ( Which are NOT pure democracy, but rather a democratic republic. )
2) My countrymen. ( Most of whom still think that digital watches are a pretty neat idea. )
Also, it is my humble opinion that the larger a democratic country is, the more disgruntled it's population will be on the whole. This is because decisions can be made with only a fifty-one percent majority ( in most cases ). In smaller countries, this only leaves the potential for 49 people, or 49,000 people, etc, to not get thier way. In larger democracies, like ours, you have the potential for millions to be 'in the minority'. I don't believe that the opinions and beliefs of 101 million should supercede those of the other 99. If we were split into smaller countries, or more independant states ( 5 points to the American who can tell me where we've heard THAT before ) then each side will get what they want, without trampling over what millions of others want.
Of course, this will never happen, because we Americans ( I can't speak for Europe ) have become soft, fat, and lazy. As long as there's plenty of Hostess Snack Cakes in the cupboard, and something mind-numbingly violent is on the boob tube ( to keep us from thinking about how mind-numbingly useless our paticular cog in the machine is ), then we shant lift a finger.
Warning: This is not a flame, this is an opinion, which just so happens to be mine. This also isn't an entry for the national spelling bee. So unless your response is insightful or informative, kindly fornicate yourself with a sharp iron stick. ( This warning was meant for the public at large and is not directed at the parent of this post. )
Your anecdotal evidence that "Windows is better for home users" is just as useless as the term "Microsoft-tax".
CDs don't last forever you know....
Are they releasing the entire game, or just an updated executable? What made the original so good was the soundtrack ( IMHO ), and I'd love to hear all my old favorites again.
Boy, I'd hate to have Windows crash on me while scanning... You'd have a high-res image of the Blue Screen of Death burned into your retina.
Oh, page hits?! Err, nevermind.
And of course:
Too many laughs to mention here. WTFS

Bastards.
Was anyone actually expecting this to turn out differently?

Time for me to go psycho Timothy Bottoms style till these guys ease up.

BTW, I'm american.

Try this program. Granted, it's a simulator rather than a model, but it's pretty accurate.

If for no other reason that the game's storyline. From the docs:
Official game storyline: "You kill stuff. The End."
Finally a first person shooter that doesn't try to beat me over the head with hours of meaningless plot development!
