If this is such a good idea, and so cost effective, why isn't it being done more places?
There are a number of reasons why. As urban areas grow there is less space to spread the shit around. You have to put the manure somewhere. If you don't have alot of land readily available then you have to haul it off. So lack of open land is driving up the cost of manure disposal, making electrity generation a more cost effective option.
Between the cost of fuel going up and the cost of complying with EPA regulations drive the price of electricity up.
Wait about 10 years probably most dairys and landfills will be doing this.
How well are subscriptions doing for slashdot? Does anyone know if this feature was added because subscriptions are doing well or because subscriptions are doing bad and they need more incentives to subscribe?
At $5, slashdot is getting $0.005 per ad-free page view. What does slashdot get paid per page view with an ad?
Good point. Here is my question to everyone that thinks the GPL will not stand up in court. If the GPL is held invalid, then what happens to the code? Does it just go into the public domain? Does it somehow become proprietary?
Original works are copyrightable, facts are not. The facts, tv showtimes etc, are fair game. The other parts of the webpage, ads etc, are copyrightable. I guess you could argue that removing the adds is voilating the copyright they hold on the ads???
Data can't be copyrighted. That is why anyone can give sports scores. The NBA etc. make a loophole for real time scores. The only way to get real time scores is to be in the building. Basically when you watch a game, they prohibit you from "broadcasting" via your cell phone etc while the game is going. If you just got up in the middle of the game left, then you could say "hey the score was X when I left." But then they wouldn't let you back into watch the rest of the game.
The point would be to find out what was wrong. We now have a shuttle that is destoyed and we don't know exactly why. This prevents us from fixing the other shuttles. If they did do an in orbit inspection. Found problem A. Were able to analyze it, that info would be useful in preventing the problem in future missions. They MAY have been able to use that info to help land, maybe not. But at least the info would help FUTURE missions.
By sending a broken page to opera, Microsoft is implying to the user that the problem is on the browser. The user sees the broken page and thinks "Opera is a piece of sh!t, it can't even render msn.com." Now if Microsoft would put up a message saying, we don't like you because you use Opera, then I would agree with you.
I don't see it that way. I see the lawyers being used as a legal framework so that things don't get wierd if there's a problem. The letter was extremely polite, and invited him to give them a call to discuss the issue.
The lawyers said "we will not tolerate coexistance with your website in its current form." That doesn't sound very polite to me.
Image that your dog gets out and digs up your neighbors flowers. Would your rather
A: have your neighbor come over and ask you to keep your dog tied up.
B: Recieve a letter in the mail saying "From the law offices of attorney so and so. We will not tolerate your dog digging up my flowers. If you do not stop him we will sue, but I hope to resolve this in a friendly manner."
No they don't NEED to do if for legal reasons. But you are partly right.
Let's say they called him 2 weeks ago. He still didn't remove the logo, then they had the lawyer send this same exact letter. Lets say it went to trial.
Your right, it may turn in to a he said/she said about when he received the first notice. But who cares. The only way that comes into play is in determining the time of notice and maybe damages. Big deal, so they use Jan 15 instead of Jan 2 as the time of notice. They lose out trying to get two weeks worth of damages.
They could easily have defended their trademark by just giving him permission to use it. Or they could have just called him on the phone. The problem is they sent a shot across his bow by calling an attorney.
What your missing here, is the guy is upset because he has done a service that has helped PCI. When they had a problem with him, instead of just giving him a call on the phone, they send in the lawyers.
Currently I DO PAY slashdot not to put adds on every screen. I am thinking about subscribing to Salon premium. So when you say "you currently pay nothing for these sites" you are completely wrong.
What I hate is having to go through the subscription process on each site. If I could just put $10 into a bucket and then be able to choose to let slashdot, salon etc. take $.02 .
One thing I don't want is to pull out my credit for every site. I don't mind paying a few cents to view a web page, I just don't want the hassle of going through the payment steps. If someone had a system where I pay $10 to some micropayment corp, then I could view Salon, slashdot etc and they would just deduct the cost from my account. That would be great.
what about proxy servers?

Would running a proxy server be harder to detect? I run squid and have all of my home pcs connect to the web through it.
I have been doing kite aerial photography for a while. pictures here.
After 911 the cops have given me much more problems. On more than one occasion I have the police come up and ask me what I have hanging from my kite. Usually after I explain things it is cool with them, but I have heard stories of people having the cops pull guns on them thinking they are distributing anthrax or other badness.
e success of Linux proves that the software industry would be fine without copyrights
I think you are missing something very important. The success of Linux is TOTALLY dependent on copyright. I Linus had not GPL'd Linux, then would not have gone anywhere. Remember Linux IS copyrighted using the GPL.
I agree with the parent poster that it would be good to send a note explaining the virus. As the saying goes "you catch more flies with honey." A nice note may do the trick.
But sometimes you need to play hardball. If you are worried, talk to an attorney. He may suggest that HE draft a memo stating something like "My client did not send the virus. We can easily prove that because of X, Y and Z. If you pursue fraudulent legal procedings against my client, we will counter sue you for libel, etc etc. "

I remember some talk that current copyright law violated the constitution. The legal time length of copyrights has continually increased to the point were some people said it violated the "limited time" aspect.
You have to switch back to regular diesel anytime you are going to let the car cool off otherwise the waste vegetable oil would harden in the fuel lines and clog them up. Stopping for just a few minutes would be fine, stopping for a few hours would leave you with a fuel pump full of hardened lard.
Biodesiel is about the same vicosity as regular diesel so it does not have this problem.
On a large scale no it can't replace oil. Waste vegetable oil is often used in animal feed, soap etc. But in many cases waste oil (mainly places that produce small quantities) just throw it in the dumpster. (even though most states have laws forcing them to recyle).
So as long as only a handful of geeks want to do this, you can probably find a mom and pop restruant to give you all the waste oil you can use.

Why would it be any harder to grab a clear text ftp account password than a password sent cleartext via htpasswd?

I have noticed many people mentioning Java and C, but few talking about perl. Am I the only one here who uses perl at work on a daily basis?
