    Even with a 20 drive raid1 array, that's not enough for one reason.

    Lightning. Well, a bunch of other things that can destroy the machine too.

    But you always need backups. And you always need a copy of that backup somewhere offsite.

    Yup, i've got a pair of boards from some old 21600's and 31600's for just that purpose.

    still have a bunch of machines running off 1.6 gig drives at the office.

    I presume you mean Raid1.

    One drive in a raid0 is enough to cause total loss, no matter how many drives you have.

    Assuming you don't want to screw around with font sizes.

    Get a 21" LCD that has a native resolution of 1600x1200.

    Run it at 800x600. This makes it map each pixel to 4 pixels(2 vertical, 2 horizontal), which will scale perfectly no matter what.

    Congrats, you now have a 21" 800x600 monitor.

    Every plane I've been on(dozens of flights) in the last 2.5 years has had the cockpit door open until just before taxi-out.

    And it's open once you're at the gate on landing.

    Indeed, which is the whole problem, still reliant on fossil fuels. This technology gets you off fossil fuels, and is the point of the grandfathers post.

    Just don't rely on the APC sizer online. They claim something like 7 hours runtime for the APC 1000XL with a UX24BP(the monster battery pack). Actual runtime at the load specified is just over 3 hours.

    APC claimed it was because of the APC power bars plugged into the unit.

    APC will politely tell you to not even think about it.

    Had an older unit that used something like 15 AH battery, and asked them about using the panasonic replacement which was something like 17ah. they wouldn't talk to me at all beyond saying no it can't be done.

    But then again, considering they don't care about the security holes in their powerchute plus 5.02 software either, I'm not all that surprised

    Circuit city had 7200 rpm 120 gig WD 8 meg cache(the 120JB) for 180 minus a 100 dollar rebate this week.

    Best buy matched it to 80 without needing a rebate.

    My Verbatim 32x10x40, which is the Liteon LTR-32123S.

    There's a hacked firmware out there which turns it into the LTR-40125S, which adds Mt. Ranier support and runs at 40x burn, 12x rewrite, 48x read, instead of the 32x10x40.

    Haven't tried it though.

    One thing I'm looking for is how to have the dry contacts only report to the snmp, not email/page me about everytime one is triggered. For now, procmail looks like the best way to just silently drop the email.

    Make a duplicate of the data on the drive before shipping it.

    If it pukes on the way, make another duplicate and repeat.

    Hand deliver after that after that fails.

    Fire your courier who is delivering hard drives to your competitor after that fails.
