I live in Latin America (Caracas, Venezuela) and I make $2,300 / month with a 3-month salary bonus at the end of the year. While it's true that many people in some countries in Latin America make less than $50/month that's not the case of every single country. How typical for americans to just assume every country south of the border drinks tequila, wear sombreros and have mariachis...
Does anyone know if the new kernel has support for PPP over ATM? I just got my DSL service from Bellsouth in Florida and *REALLY* want to have my Linux box connecting via DSL.
Some people in/. seem to think that everyone in latin america lives in a mud hut, doesn't know how to read and has a donkey as a primary mean of transportation. As someone pointed out before, there are different levels of "development" (or "underdevelopment"). I was born and raised in Latin America and I always had running water, access to education, electricity and other "niceties" you guys out there think we lack. Of course, there are rural parts in Latin America that certainly need all those services, but it's not like it's 99% of the population.
I used to work for a Venezuelan ISP and we had a growth rate of 30% a month, even though the phone company charges by the minute and getting an account was expensive. My friends just got ADSL service for $80/month. A friend of mine just started a WAP company down there (www.conectium.com). The internet is certainly growing, contributing with the economy and thus creating new jobs.... isn't that what capitalism is supposed to be about?.
The most compelling reason to use english is that the internet is mostly english now, isn't it?. My first lnguage is spanish but not all spanish speakers are fortunate enough to know english, at least in such a level that would let them take advantage of most of the info out there. Having an english-only internet would mean denying the opportunity of sharing the wealth of the Internet to non-anglo people in the world. Now, you might argue that, being the world a "globalized" one, it is in their best interest to learn english anyways. True. But that means they would get behind in the game *while* they catch up with the language.
A while ago I was on #linux Dalnet and I helped quite a few people *in english*, when someone from Spain came in the channel and asked for help in spanish because he didn't know a word of english, I talked to him in our common language. Result? I got kicked out of the channel because it's "english only".... they didn't care I helped many other english speakers before. So much for tolerance!
I used to work in Venezuela and I was getting $28K/year. I'm currently in the US but I'm going back to my home country now that they will pay me $40K with a $10K bonus at the end of the year. (The company pays the taxes for me, so I get the full amount). The cost of living is ok, the women are beautiful... I'm just tired of people on the subway yelling "Go back to your F%!%#ing country".... so I guess I'll do just that:)
I got a call from a guy the other day offering "MS Certification Programs" and I told him like 5 times that I wasn't interested, then he asked me if anyone else in the office would be interested and I said that I didn't think so because we're a UNIX shop... his reply was: "UNIX? what's that? does it run on NT?".... It figures....
