If only climate prediction were so predictable that someone with (big assumption on my part) no formal advanced training in climatology could make such broad assertions with such certainty. I don't have any advanced formal training in climatology but I don't think that you do either.
First, yes warm water is the fuel of a hurricane, but the assumption that you make that "it doesn't encouter any upper level troughs or other shearing mechanisms" is a huge assumption. If you are someone who lives in a hurricane prone area, like myself and many other millions, you are made aware of certain facts. The first is that small changes in climate in one area of the earth has a massive affect on the climate on another area of the earth. El Nino is the classic example. El Nino leads to far fewer hurricanes because the warm water in the Pacific causes different upper level wind patterns (i.e. shearing) in the Atlantic (not to mention all over the world). I am sure that you knew this because you made the assumption about shearing in the first place. My point is that this is a huge huge assumption.
Secondly, most models suggest that the temperate regions will have the greatest affect by global climate change. This means that your reference to the equitorial region warming is another huge assumption.
Third, we have for the past several decades had substantiall fewer hurricanes in the Atlantic and Carribean and Gulf than the statistical average. That happened during those years of "global warming". Why have the number of hurricanes been lower than average during years that many scientists say the temperature went up? 2 reasons, climate is very very difficult to predict and hurricanes are very very difficult to predict (meaning hotter does not necessarily mean more). You cannot use static analysis on whether.
Hurricane experts, for the past couple of years, have been saying that the number of hurricanes is going to climb back to the historical normal level and that people are going to be surprised because they are used to the hurricane lull. They have not been saying this because of global warming, they have been saying this because of the natural hurricane cycle.
This whole thing reminds me of that summer when there were some high profile shark attacks. The press declared the current year as having a epidemic of shark attacks. They spent many many words editorializing on the cause of this massive increase (global warming was implicated I think). The number of shark attacks for that year turned out to be fewer than the average. It was just alot hype from the press.
I have no clue whether or not there is substantial global climate change or an increase in the number of hurricanes as a result, but I do know there is alot of hype and conjecture.
Before you jump on the human cause for global warming, I would suggest reading some articles and papers by John Christy. He is a very respected climatologist. He provides some very convincing counter arguements.
The funny thing is that the increasing ozone hole is an abnormality caused by atmospheric conditions and the decreasing ozone hole is an abnormality caused by atmospheric conditions. What the hell is normal?
I don't think that the current versions of ogg and mp3 support PL2. I have heard that wmv does though. It is probably not that important to have the digital output, but for those of us with an irrational obsession with all things geeky, it would be nice. Does it have a wireless remote?
I don't think that they have a digital output other than the USB. Most good stereos use digital outputs and inputs. The sound quality is much better and would support Dolby PL2 and other encoding schemes. If it does indeed have the digital/optical audio output, I will buy it. I know all the previous players do advirtise this feature and the h320 does not.
That is the point I made. Older models of the iriver hard drive based digital music players support "OPTICAL/LINE OUT" but the H320 does not (to either my knowledge or customer supports knowledge). You do realize that this was a discussion on the H320 and not the H120 right?
I have been trying to find out if either the H320 or H340 have digital optical output which I am pretty confident that they do not. I have spoken with the customer support but they had not a clue. The lack of digital optical out is strange because their older players have this feature which is quite nice. The only audio output that they have is an analog. For all of you that connect their digital audio players to their stereos, THAT SUCKS!!!!! Wait for the competition to catch up. Then, either iriver will start to support this feature or their competition will. Also, it is about time that they get wireless remotes. Both these features are essential if you want to plug this sucker into your stereo.
I actually primarily listen to NPR and PBS for my news. I do enjoy watching Fox on Sunday mornings. I find that their editorialists: Bill Kristol, Maura Liason, Juan Williams, and Brit Hume are all brilliant and bring up very salient issues. I also watch Dan Rather on CBS but I find that he is too partisan and rarely if ever presents the opposing view.
The problem with Michael Moore is not really the veracity of what he states, it is that he omits anything that would contradict his point. I am not going to go over any examples. I think that Christopher Hitchens does a fine job outlining some. The shocking thing is that people who I would otherwise consider critical thinkers (on both sides of the aisle) can be taken in by such garbage. Even the most liberal op ed journalists suggest that this movie (not documentary) be taken with a grain of salt. Anyone who actually thinks about this for more than a nano second realize that this movie's conclusions are completely unsupported. In science, you formulate theories and then try and disprove them. The same is true for social science. In Moore's movie, he formulated an oppinion and then taylored what evidence to use to best support the thesis while ommiting anything that is unhelpful. The crowd that seems likely to find this movie believable are as paranoid as those who are convinced that Clinton had Vince Foster killed. Please read Hitchens for a good retort. BTW for those who are unfamiliar with Cristopher Hitchens, he is a conservative, brilliant writer who is no great fan of Bush.
Microsoft said that they are working on a patch for the beagel worm to fix those features. They anticipate it being ready around the first quarter next year.
This might be a little hypersensitive but I feel a little nervous about putting this signature system in the hands of a company with no proof that the code nor the process is secure. I know OS code is not flawless but at least it can be peer reviewed. Also, what if the company goes out of business. I have no problem with a company managing the sinatures, but I am just a little apprehensive about betting only on the future of a company. Also, this does not seem even a little bit innovative. Essentially they are talking about doing a digital signature. We were doing very similar projects in my CS security class using OS security tools. Digitally signing a hash is nothing new. Maybe I am being naieve, but I don't think so. If I am being naieve, please explain how.
the funny thing about this is that for the first couple of months my Tivo was convinced that I was gay. Every day I came home to see that the Tivo recorded nothing but Queer as Folk and, oddly enough, Sponge Bob Square Pants. I wouldn't look to see what was on the play list unless I closed the blinds. I thought the Tivo people were playing a joke on my. I reset the unit and never had that problem again.
I would be shocked if it didn't have all those goodies. Maybe with the exception of the broadcast flag stuff. I can't think that it would be very difficult to create a filter that sits inline that switches the "record" bit in question. As for the component video ouput and the optical audio output, it would make no sense to not have either of these. They already have the optical audio out and HD needs either component out or dvi out (I think this is true but no sure). I am going to buy one shortly after they are released.
I would say, without a doubt, that the technology of the Stealth Bomber is cool.
This does not seem to make much sense

I am no expert on global climate change but we have been told that the amount of UV radiation has be increasing considerably due to ozone depletion. We are now told that the amount of light reaching the surface of the earth is going down. This means one of two things. Either one or both of the studies are wrong or we can now buy some of those cheesy posters that glow when exposed to UV light and not have to buy that stupid uv light. Think of the savings. We might eventually be able to hang them outside in the middle of the day and still see them glow.
We will all have tans and nobody will be able to see them.
I cannot find anything in my post that would in any way indicate that I think deforestation is not an issue. How did you derive that from my post? You may be referring to my assertion that "I am on the fence in regards to the human influence on global climate change" but alas deforestation is not global climate change.
You did not really attack the poster other than to suggest that he is a troll. What I was referring to was the attack on the author of the article. While, slashdot is rather informal, the basic premises of logic still apply. The validity of an arguement in no way is influenced or bolstered by the motives or objectivity of the person making the arguement. A good arguement will stand on the merit of arguement alone. I have not read the paper so I don't have an opinion one way or the other on the merit of his arguement.
Please refer to Logical Fallicies for a complete list of these fallacies.
I hate to break it to you but many people do not believe that humans contribute little to global warming. I am on the fence in regards to the human influence on global climate change. One of the greatest reasons for people's skepticism is the reliance on logical fallacies. It always shocks me when I see a discussion on global climate change the personal attacks and other logical fallacies that are employed primarily by the group that believes in the human influenced global warming. Incedently, attacking the person does not support your point in the slightest.
Have they come out with a Linux version of Gator? I am sure the Linux community feels left out. This might be just the thing that would cause me to fdisk my computer and reinstall windoze.
I noticed that you did not mention your long-distance carrier. I don't think that the target for these phones is the local provider being that these two phones cannot call regular land lines. How could you order a pizza? Unlike you, my long-distance provider experience has been an utter nightmare. So much so that I have chosen not to have a long distance carrier. If only these phones worked with land lines. There are some alright alternatives though. The one that I am trying is Dialpad.com. There is a little lag but I only need it for international calls. I do my state to state on a cell phone.
This kid is a true genius. He modifies the worm and renames it teekids.exe and sends it out. He hacks a site or two and puts his signature "Teekid hacked this site". He posts regularly to trojan and virus sites broadcasting his intentions. He then **get this** registers t33kid.com to his own name and address. Did he want to get caught????? This guy is a regular Forrest Gump.
wow! After reading all of the posts one thing is painfully obvious, we should probably keep the topic on subjects that we have a clue about, computers. Just for shits and giggles I would love to log on to a geologist or climatologist discussion on computers just to see if they are as clueless on computers as we are on the climate. Their conversation might run along the lines of which is better Micro$oft Outlook or Micro$oft Outlook Express. This could parallel out discussion on why melting ice in water does not raise the water level.
they have been making some golf tees out of this for a couple of years. I thought it was plastic until last summer. It looks just like regular plastic.

The H340 is not out in America and neither is the H320. You must have gotten it somewhere other than America. Either that or gray market. Let me know.

I don't know why they need anything. They do not have much in their database. I went to their site and this is what I saw:
We started on December 12, 2002 and already have -1 entries in the English version.
I figure that I could maintain this database in my head.
