This may be a naieve but if there is contentious code in the kernel and the code in contention handles parallel processing, why can't you just not compile the offending code. By taking out the code, there is no issue. I suppose that is one reason that IBM is targeted. I am sure that Linux on Mainframes need the multiprocessor support. It seems to me that if you are not using multiprocessing then you do not need to include that support in the kernel. I may be missing the boat though.
I think maybe some people are jumping the gun here. M$ licensed the software. They did not buy the rights to the software. The right that they purchased was probably the right to use the code in their software. In other words, they can use the software. This does not mean that they can sue people or be party to a suit against someone regarding the use of the UNIX code. I wouldn't lose any sleep because you think this is the nail in the coffin of Linux.
That is not really a dumb question. The answer is yes and no. 3DES is essentially standard DES done 3 times. It has a kind of kink in the procedure. First, it encrypts. Next it decrypts with a different key from the first. Next it re-encrypts with yet a third key. The result is not 3 times as secure. A DES encryption scheme is 56 bits (56 encryption bits plus 8 parity bits). DES is not (3*56) 168 bits encryption but it is much more secure than standard DES. That said. The math behind the encryption is very strange. Those that can "see" the math are very very intelligent. The actual implementation of an algorithm is easy to do by hand. The long and the short of it is encryption multiple times probably has little or no effect unless you know what you are doing and then there might be a way to increase the encryption level with multiple passes through an algorithm.
For all of you Americans and British who disagree with the war. The fact that you can dissent publicly on this great forum (mod up) without the threat of death by your government is one great reason for you to reasses your view of the war. If you were Iraqi and you were caught dissenting with the great one (Hussein), make no mistake, you would be killed brutally. There is a possibility that your family would be killed as well. I heard an Arab saying "the enemy that you know is better than the enemy that you do not know." What this says to me is that the good people of Iraq have been petrified for so long by this tyrant that they are willing to live under all the threats of violance and misery because they cannot fathom living under a government that is based upon freedoms. They could not fathom posting dissenting views to such a public forum.
It does not matter if you are for military action or against military action to disarm/depose Hussein. Most of the arguements given are rediculous. First there is little connection between Iraq and Al Quaeda. There is a small chance that they could give some weapons of mass destruction to Al Quaeda. There is a less significant chance that they use those weapons in the future against either a neighbor or US/Europe. There is a lot of evidence that they have stockpiles of these weapons and still seek nukes. Hussein said that his biggest mistake of invading Kuwait is that he did so before he got nukes. I think that most would agree if he ever got nukes, he would use them with little regard. Is this a reason to invade? I don't know. Also, by UN numbers, 6000 Iraqis starve each month as a result of UN sanctions. This is not accecptable. This number will exceed the numbers of innocents killed in a was (most likely). You cannot be for sanctions and against military action and have any credibility. The war for oil is the most absurd of all arguements. On one hand protestors are saying that the war is going to be horrible for the economy. On the other hand they will say that the war is for oil, implying that some how the economy is is benefitting. The other arguement is that some how the President is personally benefitting. There is a good chance that if this war is not very short and has very few casualties (US and innocent Iraqi citizens), that the president will not be re-elected. The current support is for the troops and the president but will change quickly if casualties mount and the war lingers. I don't see how this war benefits the president unless he personally takes all the oil and goes home to Texas. The same oil motives were alleged during the first Gulf war. What the protestors are not saying is that France, Russia, China, and Germany have active economic interests in Iraq. Russia and France have been activly trading with the Iraqis. They have been promised lots of oil contracts. There have been alligations of covert between France and Iraq and Germany and Iraq. These have not been substantiated and until proven should be considered just rumors. France built a reactor for the Iraqis. This reactor, the UN found, was being used to generate fissile material until the Israelis bombed it. The French still deny that the reactor was used for military purposes. The Chinese created a fiber optic communications system for the Iraqi military. The point of this is that all governments have their incentives. Don't think that the US is the only government or people are the only ones that have their own self interests in mind. So far, most arguements for or against war are full of ad homin attacks. This weakens the arguement tremendously. It does not matter if you are against the war because the US should not act (multilaterially) without UN support or that war is necessary because Hussein has violated UN cease fire agreement for 12 years, those are good arguements. "I hate France so I am for the war" is as stupid an arguement as "the US is the evil empire so I am against the war."
Am I the only one that can't stand it when people go over seas and snicker about how gauche America is and Americans are. I am British by birth, I lived in Canada and am now and forever more an American citizen and resident. Invariably, when I go overseas, especially Europe, people for some odd reason feel it fit to start in on how horrible America is. They start with a fairly inocuous, off the cuff criticism and look for the slightest support of their observations and if they find the support they are looking for, you have to spend the next 30 minutes listening to how America "just doesn't get it". What is worse is when the American joins in on anti-American tirade. I don't think for an instant the every foreign national should blindly follow the lead of the party in power. The people who do that are clearly partisans and are just the type of people who engage in this self-loathing anti-Americanism. A pragmatic person can see that life is extremely complex. Those that say they have the answers are almost invaribly those that do not even understand the question. Economics, foreign policy, politics... are 99 parts art and 1 part science. The answer is ALWAYS contingent upon many unknown varibles. No one can, with any consistency, predict outcomes in these fields. Leaders of countries, especially true democracys (and republics) rarely make flip decisions. These elected officials futures depend upon their decisions today. So when people such as the author of the email in question express the views that she did, they are really just saying that they either don't understand the questions or just are just too bitter to be intellectually honest. The reason that countries make these comments about other countries (especially America) is that they are trying to exert their influence over the foreign power itself. America engages in this as does every other country. It is just a game of politics.
BTW unilateral means one-sided. Multilateral means many-sided. Unilateral does not mean "without UN support." America is not acting unilaterally, it is acting multilaterally without UN support. The trick is to be intellectually honest and not fall prey to politics.
To keep this on-topic, it sucks that the author's email was forwarded and read in such a public forum. The moral is pick your friends wisely.
no point in waiting. The TiVo HD will probably be well over $1000. Right now you can get a TiVo for about $200. These TiVos include a tuner. Currently HD Tuners cost about $700. You can get one or two for about $500. In order for the TiVo to be effective, it must have lots of hd space (Terabyte?). This will raise the cost alot. The only other option is that Tivo goes to another storage medium like digital tape. I really doubt that they will do that because of access time. The long and the short of it is that if TiVo does come out with the Hd version, it will either downscale the image or cost alot of money. My bet is that they will do both.
I have pretty much finished building my HTPC (Home Theater PC). I would
suggest visiting some forums. Specifically avs forum. Some things that you might
want to check out is a MyHD card. It will upscale existing resolution to
1080i. It will also take an existing hd transmition and allow you to output
it to an HDTV. The MyHD card comes with tuner software and a remote.
Secondly you should look into getting some software called PowerStrip. This
allows for dynamic resolution settings. Different applications will require
different resolutions. It also allows you to tweak refresh and color. A
good etailer/retailer is digital
connection. You can get the MyHD card there. Also they sell low
profile cases that look like stereo components. Another thing that you
should get is a VGA to component switch. This will take a vga output and
convert it to a digital component output for your hdtv. Some of the experts
suggest specific motherboards. The one that I got upon someone's suggestion
is the Asus P4B533 P4 Socket 478 DDR Motherboard. Apparently, there are
certain chipsets that are very good for multimedia. I think that the
chipset that is in the Asus is the Intel 845 but I can't remember if that is
correct. Also that board comes with a digital coax and dolby 5.1 on the
board. You can save a couple of bucks this way. You could also buy an
expensive sound card and get a little better quality but not much better.
Do the M$ XP as well. They have better multimedia support and can support a
Bluetooth keyboard and mouse, which you might want. The blue tooth has
better range than other RF and you don't have to worry about obstructions.
There are other HD cards out there such as Holo3DGraph, but they can be very
expensive. MyHD gives you good bang for you buck. BTW, you will still need
a regular Video card. They suggest a ATI Radeon. That is the standard for
HTPCs. For watching DVD, you will want TheaterTech and for enabling remote
operation, you will want to look into the software package Girder
(spelling).
Before you buy anything, go to the avsforum website and check with some
people who have been doing this a long time. They even have a Linux HTPC
forum. Sorry, but the drivers for the MyHD card on Linux are not
available....yet.
There is a book called Mathmatics From the Birth of Numbers by Jan Gullberg. This book is $50 American. It starts with the concept of numbers in different cultures all the way through calculus including Diff eqs, harmonics, probability, matrices, integration, power series, methods of approximation, trig, analytic geometry... This is a fantastic book. If you have a good foundation but were not able to tie it all together, this is the book for you. Each chapter gives you enough examples to tie the theories together but not enough to teach the concepts without a foundation. Get the book if you are intersted in math.
America is not only one of the largest contributers to pollution but the largest economy and as such, the largest producer of goods and services. I can assure you that energy is needed to produce these goods and services. Allocating polluting "credits" based on a per capita basis is crazy. Look at the depressed economies of Europe. Look at the unemployment rate. Using the dollar amounts of goods and services is still not a good proxy for the amount or importance of the goods produced so please don't oversimplify this issue. In order to come up with a fair solution, it is important to come up with a fair quota that does not unfairly stifle buisiness.
You must not have read the article. It almost certainly was not a script. ZD was tracking what links were used to get to the page. Fortunatly MS Exchange gave the link with the subject line of the email and the unames. This is no great conspiracy but it is kind of funny. This kind of crap is commonplace but it is funny when they get caught.
I agree NT/2000 is much more stable than 95/98... but my experience with XP is different than yours. I managed to bsod XP on a brand new out of the box factory installed unadulterated Compaq laptop after 20 minutes of light use. Needless to say I was shocked (not really). I know this is a very anicdotal example but I have never been able to do the same with any Linux or Mac install.
We have finally got what we wanted (mabe not everyone), Open Source is being considered a viable software development model. Now that Open Source is legitimate, it will be considered a threat to companies with which it has competing interests. Microsoft, a company with billions of dollars and thousands of jobs at stake, has identified Linux and Open Source as very large threat. The Mundie comments as well as the token effort to make some Windows apps open source will attest to the identification of Linux and Open Source as a threat. After trashing Linux and Open Source, you have to ask yourself why would Microsoft start offering products that would "enhance" linux. From their perspective an enhanced Linux would be a far greater threat than an unenhanced Linux. Microsoft's core products are Operating Systems. The majority of their efforts will go towards protecting and extending their monopoly and keeping their captive audience. Microsoft as a company would be just another company if not for their OSs. With all of these facts, you have to ask yourself why would they possibly be getting into bed with the competitor. There is only one reason for this. Microsoft wants to rape us then kill us (and then tourture our relatives). If this means they need to act like our best friends in order to get in the door, so be it. You will never hear "you know we had Linux all wrong, lets help their cause" at a Microsoft meeting. What you will hear is "how do we cut off the head of this looming Linux threat?" Microsoft wants to get in bed with a Open Source and Linux company for one reason, they want to screw us hard.
As an anecdotal story: Roosevelt had an American Indian Chief to the White House for a dinner. The President turned to the Indian chief and asked "do you have any advice for the President of the United States?" The chief turned to Roosevelt and responded "be careful with your immegration policy." Microsoft will treat us much the same ways that European settlers treated the Indians. They will come as frinds and then take the land.
Microsoft is our competitor, lets treat them as such.
I just compiled the new 2.4.2 kernel. Using the make bzdisk command I created a boot disk with the new kernel. When I reboot the system I get the error "Invalid compressed format (err=1). Does anyone have any clues why this would be? I am just about to pull my last remaining strands of hair out.
Thanks

I did not know that telnet was a BSD invention. I always thought that it was a protocol that was developed in the 7 layer OSD model and later adapted for TCP/IP. If this is the case, mabe the FreeBSD project could charge royalties for these tools. Mabe they could get royalties for TCP/IP. I would settle for Hari Kari .
