  1. Re:Why? on New Mac Clone Maker 'Quo' To Open Retail Store · · Score: 1

And yet I bought an Apple desktop this year. Got a mini cause I couldn't justify buying a Pro. If Apple was selling single CPU mATX type systems priced and spec'd about the same as the iMac line I would have bought one. I not asking that Apple sell this kind of computer for dirt cheap or to cut their profit margins. Honestly, Apple could sell it through the online store only and keep out of the brick and mortar stores. I just want a computer that would be the equivalent of the $1600 PowerMac I could get years ago.

I'm with the parent. I had a MDD G4 until recently. I broke down and got one of the new minis cause it finally supported dual monitors. Though I wish Apple had a $1600 box that I could expand down the line. With 1 PCIe, 1-2 PCI, and 2-4 drive bays. I would have gladly given Apple the extra $1000 for that box. Especially if I could have thrown in different processors. My PowerMac 7500 was great for the time, I had 601, 604, dual 604, and g3 processors in that box.

I feel there is a hole in the mac line that the pro-sumer wants. Yes, it may be a bit harder to support with generic hardware. Apple can be dicks and claim to only provide support for official hardware. As I said before that's the Mac I want to buy.

As for Futurama, at the end they stuck it on Sunday night at 7pm. At best you got to see the show already in progress because of football running long.

I haven't keep track of MythTV lately as I have a TiVo HD. The problem with MythTV going forward is that it can only do HD with OTA. Since CableLabs won't approve MythTV (or any digital cable tuner cards) as a CableCard device it handicaps the usefulness for digital cable. As far as I can tell the only way to make it work with digital cable is to have the MythTV use IR blasters for the set top box. Which is the main reason I dumped my previous TiVo when the HD model came out. The IR blasters are not reliable and the cable companies will not activate the serial port on that back. IE the cable companies want to lock you down and limit your options for what is really a VCR on steroids.

Cut this usenet access and how many people will switch over to using BitTorrent to download stuff. Which will most likely have to go outsides Verizon's network for all or a portion of the torrent. Will this increase in external traffic cost Verizon more than running a complete usenet server?

I won't say that macs don't crash, but if they are crashing on a regular basis something is wrong. Right before Leopard came out, my dual G4 was crashing on a daily (if not more basis). Since I knew I was about to install a new OS, I waited until Leopard was out before I did an OS install. I threw in a new IDE drive, installed Leopard, migrated data off of the old HD and things have been smooth ever since. If you mac crashes fairly often, then you either need to troubleshoot it or go for a fresh install. I tend to blame the software/OS for getting out of whack before saying the hardware is failing.

Yeah gotta love the states with oppressive liquor laws. In PA, we have beer distributors and state stores. The state stores sell wine and hard liquor while the beer distributors only sell beer and soda. Of course you also must buy beer in quantities of a case (ie 24 bottles/cans). Which sucks for a beer snob like me that wants to buy in smaller quantities to sample different microbrews. Also makes it nearly impossible to sample Belgian style beers which come in 750ml bottles. You can buy beer in smaller quantites from delis, but they are over priced. I could care less where I have to buy my beer, I just want variety in the quantities I can buy it in. I'm resigned to fact that I don't think the laws will change.

I would agree that is why they can do it. From a usage standpoint local caches/repositories makes a lot of sense. Get the customer to reduce their usage of the ISP's WAN pipe and have the stuff they want on the local/cheap/almost infinite bandwidth. The problem in the USA is that ISPs can't setup a bank of BitTorrent boxes to help seed their network without getting in a lot of trouble. Though I expect it would help them cut down on the WAN bandwidth usage. I hear that Comcast limits the downloads from their usenet servers, while Verizon seems to have unlimited downloads from their usenet servers. While I don't expect ISPs to state a preference for nzb over BitTorrent, I would have to imagine that they prefer you to use nzb to download your movies and tv shows.

From what I've read, the current production lines are going full tilt to get the 1.8 million/month. They will need major capital expense to expand production. How fast would Nintendo be able to recoup that expense? If demand drops before this, then as the parent mentioned the money is wasted and either ruin their profits or ruin the return on the capital expense. Nintendo is between a rock and a hard place.

The rock: Their competitors are able to throw a lot more money at the development of next gen consoles. Thus from a technology standpoint, better consoles.
The hard place: If they overextend themselves they may end up like Sega. No longer making hardware and creating games for other consoles.
