    The IT markets are very nichie (is that a word?) and recruters only know
    a subset of acronyms. Get a linux box, submit a few bug fixes to a major
    open source project(s). Then, "Yes I know c/c++/Java/perl, my code is running
    on thousands of enterprise datacenter systems."

    Here may be the perfect vehicle for recreating with cutting edge 3D character techniques an artificial Judy/Dorothy. The scarecrow, lion, not to mention the tin man, should be almost trivial at this point. There
    are voice actors (of various original gender) that could do excelent renditions of Judy's singing voice
    for new songs.

    Why stop at 15, in a few years we could have The OZ Channel!

    I suggested this as a joke and never thought to try it out. I really don't
    want to know the condition of my keyboard, just shaking it out would
    be good.

    I quickly retracted my suggestion in a later post, not sure if
    it was ever tried.

    And this is the first I've heard of it. As for the harbor
    they shut it down 2-3 times a week for the scary LNG tankers
    so that infrastructure is in place. As for shutting down
    the big dig, well that's pretty common. Wait, The Charles
    river is frozen over, there are no boats. Did this happen today?

    an hour. An active lawsuit certainly affects business partners
    but the studios board just needs to make the tiny conceptual

    If not a troll then some other variety of lazy cut&paste, I have seen the identical post at least once before.

    The theme that Ajax/Web 2.0 (cue violins) have too high glitz to function ratio is not unwarrented, repetitive cut&paste postings does obscure that point.

    There is something that I would carry with me contstantly. But do you
    need a full Vista? Do you need a useable keyboard? How much 'disk space' do you really need?
    If it had integrated wifi, cell/w bluetooth, media options, gps? And was LIGHT and COOL and
    LOW POWER?

    Follow the money, how do they expect to make a bundle on this? I'd
    like to see their plan before jumping in too quickly. Will there be

    Sorry to be cynical (well not sorry on /.) but having not read anything
    about this my $$ filter was triggered. Sounds really cool, worth investigating,

    8-16 *different* friends to each buy you a prepaid phone. Number them.
    When you need to make a call, roll the die, use the phone, toss it in

    How many *Artists* have used your 'Perlin code sitting around on my hard drive' ?

    How long would it take you to develop an intuitive UI? Intuitive for an artist, that is.

    I don't get it... Well actually I do.

    Ok, who uses the tools?

    Who creates images/textures?

    Who creates a cutting edge killer game with NO ARTISTS?

    How many artists have high expertise developing algorithms?

    Artists. Not programmers.

    How many tens and hundreds of thousands of great textures have been developed by programmers? Not
    a couple neato keen demos. High volume, rapid turnaround production?

    Sheesh, yes I'm slightly off topic if the only issue worth discussion is the relative performance
    between FFT's and Wavelet computation. Artmatic looks really great for the creation of
    alien landscapes, but I'd love it if their tool had some natural environments.

    Realtime procedural textures are quite cool, but there is a bunch more *standard* infrastructure
    that will be needed before the revoloution occurs. It's a another example of probably great
    technology that will go nowhere due to misunderstanding the user base.

    Are there tools to create the texture? It's not going to take
    the industry by storm if it requires a highly specialized programer
    to create a proceedural texture. Is there a Photoshop plug-in?

    IANAP but I happened to chat with a real string theory
    theorist recently, he did not seem at all impressed with
    Hawking.

    Anything that sparks the interest of a student or anyone
    to enter science is a fine thing. I'm looking forward to
    it even though the artists rendition of 11 dimensions will
    likely be more psycadelic than mathematically accurate.

    It starts out seeming to be a discussion of goat husbandry, how to feed
    them, all that good stuff. But there's a kicker. And totally safe for
    work and kids of all ages. And best: no subtle sarcasm or fake bedroom singing.
    Much better than youtube.

    I missed a step... so it was dig through network details, restart from
    the beginning, or, take a beat, be up with ubuntu in another
    20 minutes.

    ps. I'll dig in to gentoo on another project that is more
    performance oriented (and where I'll have a gentooguru on call)

    Actually that's standard on most larger sailboats over about 35 ft in length.
    Diesel for the auxiliary motor for maneuvering and a small solar panel
    to keep the batteries charged (radio, nav). Some use a small windmill for
    electricity.

    Commercial calculations need to shift 2-3 orders of magnitude. Ships are beeeg.
