  1. Re:Not just the tech savvy... on The Widening Tech-Savvy Gap · · Score: 1

not everybody has the time or ability to learn so many technical things. you think it's someone's duty to learn all the stuff you know, but when you're, say, caring for kids and/or your aging parents, working more than one job, a single parent, poor, etc, etc, you expect a mass-market tool to be easy to use or you won't have the time/energy/inclination to figure it out. nobody expects a drill-press to be easy to use; that's why it's a specialty tool for industry and hobbyists. but computers, tvs, vcrs, cell and programmable cordless phones are advertised as consumer-level tools. many consumers don't read english well, and since many manuals are poorly written or even simply transliterated from other languages, they don't make learning easier. it's nice for you that you have the time, the inclination and the background to figure everything out, but don't assume that everyone who doesn't is stupid or lazy.

The other idea is to let users create interest profiles for themselves, something like a "digital hanky code**" that says things like "I am interested in trains, motorcycles, fine wine, and cats". Advertiser's agents can then scan for these and send me messages (hopefully in an non-instrusive way) that I can get later, again when I am in the mood.
Sure, you could do that. etour does that. then they fill your goddam mailbox with spam about things you thought you were interested in, but not that interested (100k per day worth.) in. or, if you're paranoid like me and can't stand for anyone to have any accurate demographics about you, you fill up the survey with lies and then you get a mailbox full of crap.

my 1962 karmann ghia is *not* exempt from colorado emissions and still managed to pass their (admittedly reduced for vintage) pollution tests. also, since the car is very lightweight and my commute is (for denver) quite short, I can keep tires about 1 1/2 times longer than average, and probably much longer than those gas-hoovering brand-new SUVs I have to dodge every day. oh yeah, gas? my car gets almost 30mpg at sea-level, more like 20-25 here. I keep the engine well-maintained so it doesn't leak or burn oil and since it doesn't have a radiator, it doesn't use any incredibly toxic anti-freeze. thank god for junkyards, because my car is largely maintained out of them. I bought all my chrome and accessories out of california junkyards when I restored this car, and many of the mechanical & electrical parts were salvaged by me from florida junkyards. recycling is where you find it. to see this car go here. don't email me about how much my site sucks. actually it wasn't a sonnet, it was a funeral elegy, dedicated to a man known to be a friend or perhaps distant relative of shakespeare's. it was signed WS. the strength of the argument was that the elegy recalled many of shakespeare's earlier works, and presaged (may not be exactly the right word, sorry) some of shakespeare's later works in a way that a contemporary outsider could not have done. the similarity in the language used was striking, and shakespeare was known to be a great coiner of words and phrases. usage was consistent. the weakness of the comparison was the relative dullness of the writing itself, not as incandescent or moving as his great published works. foster explained this away saying that in later years shakespeare was getting tired, less sensational (again not quite the right word) than in his early works, and the elegy, while obviously not his best work, was well in the style of shakespeare having an off day.
