The "Rust" programming language boasts the ability to perform more static analysis (finding errors at compile time) than Go. Could Go add better static analysis?
In the preface there is a chart of "The Origins of Go" which includes many languages such as C, Modula-2, CSP, and so on. However C++ is missing from the chart. Oversight or intentional?
This report measures the wrong thing. If GF is profitable purely by itself (no accounting tricks, no assumptions about how much additional ad revenue could be generated, as son on), then the investment would be justifiable no matter the cost.
Also, since Google has released zero actual cost numbers, this is making guesses based on how Time Warner or other highly inefficient companies operate. Why do that?

The biggest change in business in the last 10 years is the realization that IT is not a "cost to be reduced" but the driver of innovation that should be invested in, respected, and optimized.
Those advertisements don't sell themselves. Google has a very large salesforce. Since NYC is the center of the universe for advertising (think "Madison Avenue") and magazine publishing (name just about any magazine) it is obvious that Google has a large salesforce there.
Google already rents a large part of that building and has been quoted as saying there are at leaset 2000 employees there. It's cheaper to own then rent.
Of COURSE they reserve the right otherwise they couldn't off anti-virus and anti-phishing features. Plus, it is open source so you can certainly build your own binary and remove any features you want... I guess you want your credit card stolen?
I hate to plug my own book, but... 1. Read the chapter titled, "Visibility and Perception" 2. Read the "Managing Your Boss" section of the chapter titled, "Being Happy" 3. Hand your boss a copy of the book and ask him to read "Visibility and Perception" and the chapter titled, "A Guide for Technical Managers"
Have you tried using DateBook5 for the Treo? That should let you do all The Cycle things.
I don't expect everyone to use a PAA. In fact, I expect very few people. In fact, if you are at a company with Oracle Calendar or something similar, having a PDA is really a requirement.
Like any book, it is intended to be a "take the tips you like, leave everything else" situation. If you did all the advice simultaneously if would drive you nuts. Heck, I don't even do all the techniques, some just aren't appropriate. Some weeks are more stressful and I am more disciplined about todo lists, other lists are more meeting-focused and I have other techniques that need to be my focus.
In fact, the most useful way to read the book is to do as you said (read it in a weekend, use a few tips). However, THEN re-read it 6 months later. You'll find it's like reading a completely different book. You'll find a lot of the tips you ignored before now make a lot of sense.
That's a big reason that I wrote this book. I didn't want to list all the stupid blowhard kind of ideals, I wanted to write down the useful techniques that work for me so that others can use them too.

However, no matter what you do (my book, someone else's book, etc.) the biggest problem is getting started. It's just plain difficult to change your life and start working differently. You have decades of experience bringing you to the habits you currently have and it ain't easy to change.
You and your management need to read The Practice of System and Network Administration by Limoncelli and Hogan (Addison-Wesley). It has chapters that cover this kind of thing. (I'm biased since I'm an author.)
I've been programming since 1985 and I still learned a lot from this book.
I've recommended it to many people and I just get blank stares like, "why would anyone want a book on code reading?" I have to put it in front of their face for them to understand.

When we sat down to write The Practice of System and Network Administration, we wrote a description that sounds exactly like what you wrote in your/. post. I hope you look into TPoSaNA and find it to your liking.
We have a web site about the book called www.EverythingSysadmin.com which includes a free copy of Appendix B (which, by the way, is my favorite chapter). And I would be remiss if I didn't mention that Amazon sells it too.
The entire book isn't on-line, but parts of it are on www.everythingsysadmin.com and more will be in the future. Some of the chapters are based on papers that were published at the LISA conference, so you can read them there. However, they've been expanded and edited for inclusion in the book.
That was the *most* polite "please don't use my trademark" message I've ever seen. Usually you get a legally worded "go away or we'll sue your ass off!" note.
I think he deserves credit for trying to bring civility to the process.
I think Jim Carrey's life would make a GREAT movie.
His family was so poor that for a while they worked (all of them) sweeping the floor at a factory late each night. For many years his entire family was homeless. He always wanted to become rich enough that his family would never have to go hungry again....and he has.
While his early movies were always sophomoric, he has always said (paraphrased), "I'd hate to be 70 years old and still making movies where I say, 'all-righty-then'." Beginning with The Truman Show he is certainly making the transformation he seeks.
Believe me... if you knew what you were talking about* you wouldn't have posted what you did.
