Use the power of the net. Think about it almost everyone is able to connect to the Internet for at least some period of time now you want to do a broadcast great webcasting is cheap and easy get yourself some bandwidth(which in comaparison to radio broadcast gear is not that much) and then cruise on over to this to learn how to broadcast to everyone who wants to listen to you. Is it radio? No of course not. Is it a good way to get your message out without having to go through the government? Yup that it is.
when the PS2 first came out Japan would not allow the export of them on the grounds that they could be used as a weapons platform. There were many Iraq jokes on this fine site alone. Pretty funny joke and it shows up how silly many people are about tech.
No Jon you said the "average" american child spends 49 minutes playing video games. This means that if I walked up to a child and asked them I would more often then not get the answer that they spend 49 minutes playing games. What you should have said is that the average time spent playing video games by American childeren is 49 minutes. An example from my office. I could take a poll and publish the results. Now assume there are two people in a office of 10 that read SF say about 10 hours a week (this would be about right for where I work) Now if I were to make the statement that the average person in my office reads SF for.5 hours every week that would be wrong the average person in my office does not read SF at all. That is why these numbers are without worth.
Jon that average does not mean that every child in America plays videogames for 49 minutes a day and that some play longer. That average includes all the children who do not play at all along with the children like mine who get a couple of hours a night (I think it is better than TV in many ways) So your implication at the start of this is just wrong. No I did not read the whole thing but that put me off so I just had to reply.
Think about it what does the NSA (by all reports) run. I'll give you a hint it is developed in Canada and version 2.8 just came out. The whole open source == insecure thing is a myth as looking at security for awhile will make very clear.
Linux Journal a few months back. The realy amazing bit is how much M$ makes by playing with their own stock. Also keep in mind many of their coders are staying for the stock because they are not making what they could in salary so a decent sized slip in the stock price could really snowball on them. Collapse is a little extreme go way downhill from where they are now makes alot of sense.
You sir are a moron. Why should I let you use my bandwidth, disk space cycles and memory because you can't get a good ISP. Maybe you should start living in the real world. Think about it how are you going to pay me back for my resources? If you need to use my stuff to start with you can't and won't. Wish I had mod points right now.
I have to agree the problem is not that people collect information we are all adults and all know that they do it and of course we all know that to rank sites the way they do google tracks us but the key is they are upfront with it and allow us to make an informed choice. Overall I think it is usefull enough and my feeling is that google is being resposible enough that I don't mind this.
It's about like a cell phone call. Oddly I get better sound quality calling Korea which is where I get all the savings from well savings over what I would spend if we made the same calls with a regular provider but of course before dialpad we did not call as often but my wife does like talking to her mom more often even if sometimes the sound sucks. For stuff in the US I mostly use my cell

I have StarCraft running to include battlenet. The way I had to do this was to make a small winers partition (about a gig) install everything there StartCraft, BroodWar, patch it all. Then boot into Linux and run it from there. It works fine for me. I could never get it to work without putting it on a winders partion though. This works fine for me because of damn dialpad.com (they save me almost $300 a month and for that I will let my machine be dual booted for now. Now if I could get the dialpad applet to run under Linux I'd start working on getting rid of the winders partition.
This from Neal
Stephenson explains why almost all of our current UIs are crap myself I find myself in console more and more often also I find that when I'm helping someone I take them into the CLI. It is in many ways just easier now I know this is not for everyone but the limitations of a GUI make it impossible to create something that is *really* good.
"No user is really secure, regardless of what OS they use, this we all know, so why does anyone even mention NAT, firewalls etc." Because as a home broadband user something like floppyfw (www.floppyfw.org) is a really good way to get rid of the script kiddies. The answer is yes functionality is a security risk. The only 100% secure computer is encased in cement and at the bottom of the ocean. Security always has been and always will be a tradeoff. A tight little firewall is a really good way of stopping the scitpt kiddies you don't really have anything that interesting but if it is easy they will do it if not they will move on to a easy target these days there are plenty out there. So this really does make sense.
When I was doing this we always talked about having "Wookie night" it would have been great. Also lusers would often not hear my name right and repeat back to me something wrong "Ron" was common the answer was always yes. Ahhh the memories.
How long have you been using RH? I'm guessing since the 5.0 days based on your post. Debian 2.2 is no harder to install than RH 5.2 and 6.0 (both of which were rather good btw) in the text install the only thing that might even be thought to be harder is that you can't let it partition itself but if you have been using Linux for that long you know you don't want it to. Oh and saying Debian is not as beautiful is just wrong the installer might not look as slick but think about it you might spend a hour looking at the installer. Once Debian is up I have yet to see a default desktop (I use Gnome+E with the Gnome toolbar stuff turned off) that looks as good as Debian. And trust me apt will blow your PHBs little mind out of the water. The only way to get familiar with Debian is to do it.

I thought Java was supposed to run on any platform , right? So how/why do people like dialpad right java code that will not run on Linux. Or is there something I don't know about how to make it run?
apt-get install mozzila will get you 18. I use about half and half that mostly because my kid likes alot of flash sites when I set down I use NS if it is up otherwise Mozzila and what do you mean "feature rich"?
I don't charge by the hour that is my retainer if my stuff broke and it took me 20 hours to fix it I would get $200 for that month. I'm good but not that good but I do have the good sense to choose good tools. This is why I can make $200 on retainer and barly work. OSS rules for this reason.
While for the time being I'm forced to use winders on my desktop most of the servers I'm responsible for have Linux now what you need to keep in mind is up untill just a bit ago I used Gnome because I did not like KDE's license (yes I am a license snob) That may change but for the moment I'm too lazy and don't see any real benefits in switching. Now about RH vs. Debian RH makes people like my boss feel good these are people to whom having someone to sign contracts with and send money too is important (I don't get it myself) I run ~5 servers doing various things if you ask my boss they are all running that RH 7.0 cd he spent too much money on and the RH techs are in a state of cat like readiness to help me should I need it:) Let's just put it this way what he does not know won't hurt him and the Debian community helps me out very well thank you very much. Just like these desktop machines Dell puts Linux on a box he will buy for me he does not care if it is RH or not it will be RH for about as long as it takes to fdisk that bad boy after I get it he won't know and to all the little surveys he will continue to say he has 6 RH machines. Doesn't matter to me. I think this is a common situation.
because if Dell sells it my boss will buy it for me and I'll be able to strip whatever they put on it put Debian on it he won't know the diff and I won't have winders anymore. Thank you Dell.
Let me see you pay me ~1000 dollars to set it up a nice little Samba server a Internet gateway and pull the cable. Use a simple switch (on that size network you don't need much else). Then ~200 dollars a month to maintain it. I have several that size I make money for about an hours work per month and they are happy. Oh wait I forgot these people are trying to use Winders on servers. Yup it would be much more then.
I don't know what distro you are using but if you are willing to use Debian you might try
this Yes with Debian the install is a little harder and you have to configure many things by hand but IMHO this is better for learning and since 2.2 no longer makes you deal with dselect I think it makes a reasonable choice for a class.
Oh come on. You and I use *nix on our desktop but you have seen the numbers we have all seen the numbers. The simple fact is if you take time to look at what they publish and what they put on their website O'Reilly are some of our best friends out there and they put out great books. Yup the screenshots are from winders and macs but guess what most of the people who look at the site that you run on your *nix server are going to be looking at it on winders or a mac. If you have looked at their pages and other books you would understand that this is just pragmatic it shows us where we are at. The website talks about where we can go.
a very good thing. While there are always the potential drawbacks to a large database keeping track of things this could make it much easier when someone gets themselves into my logs to find out who to inform about it. Of course most of the time you are just talking to a victim but even then it would make it much easier to warn them. Right now most of my logs get ignored cause it takes too much time to track them down. While this may not make it easier to go after the bad guys it will make it easier to give the victims a heads up. Can't get to the site right now (Go/.!!)But if they want logs from smaller sites I will be sending them mine.
Well since mentats where a workaround when they lost AI during the Jihad I don't think there is any reason why we would not be able to move toward that. I think it would start with figuring out what is different between you and me and the people who you mention that can do the math (and in the end it does all come down to the math) in their head and to figure out how to train and teach. Also I always thought that mentats followed a very formal logic I think that would be a good place to start a nice course in formal logic and math for them and then start to teach them how to tap the unused powers of the mind because yes you are right we all carry around a supercomputer in our head. Also you must keep in mind most of the mentats used some kind of drug for their "trances" I know its not the right word but thats the best I can think of right now. In any case maybe a combo of training and some kind of induced state in which we can be more like the prodigies you mention. Very cool idea.
