No this would be a *very* bd idea. To start with life is made up of more than what you see but that is not the most flawed thing in this idea. Ok so everything I see is recorded on a chip behind my retina someone decides they don't like me, ideas I have, or groups I belong too. Can you think of a better way to destroy someones life. Also what a shallow way to reconstruct a life lets leave out feelings, thoughts, smells, sounds and do it with a video. No thanks that would suck badly. For example (I don't know if you have had a child or not) the real process of childbirth is a messy ugly thing. The kid is great once it gets out and cleaned up a little but the process of getting it out involves a large amount of sh!t and blood. The fond memories of that event that most people (to include myself) have of the event are based on blocking out the ugly stuff and thinking of the cool stuff. I for one would very much not want to have a perfect photo memory of all the parts of it I saw.

The fact that it must be purchased is not ironic the fact that I could not buy a copy scan it in and post it on the net *is*. I think what O'Reilly does with books like the Debian book, the Samba book, and the net admin guide is a good comprimise OSS is not a very good model for writing a book but giving it away online can be. I read all three books online and then bought all but the Debian book. Just too much good stuff and I like the dead trees but I also like the fact that I knew what I was buying first. That would be wrong you can sell and buy both open source and free software. In both cases you can not limit what someone can do with it after they buy it. For example I could (assuming I could code)write some app and GPL it. I would then be within my rights to put it and the source on a secure server and offer to allow people to download it for $10 a shot. Now once someone downloads it they could then turn around put it on a ftp site and people could download it for free. The key here would be to provide them with some reason to pay to download it from me if I can do that I get all the advantages of OSS and Free software. So in conclusion if we assume the GPL (from your link I think a safe assumption) It is free as in speech but does not have to be free as in beer although in both cases it will be both at some point.

I would not go for one of the variants not because someone somewhere is making money off of them. That does not bother me. But simply because none of them to date really offers anything to me or I think most Debian users. Most people these days come to Debian kind of how I did start out with something like RH gain some knowledge and skills get pissed off at something look at Debian see the answer (In my case the fact that if you don't buy the RH boxset up2date is broken and that apt is a dream) Now the other distros based on Debian Corel (shudder), Storm frankly I ,and I think most Debian users would agree with me, don't need the pretty install. As far as Ian's new venture goes if he is able to repackage Debian sell it and support and make money doing it more power to him. I will stick with regular Debian for myself but I can also see how this might get it into more server rooms. So to sum up it is not ,for me, about whether one has a person behind it who wants to make money or one is regular Debian it is about which one meets my needs the best and for now regular Debian does very well thanks.

Oh what I forgot many people think that the big corps already run the country. Well ok they do but the point is they should not really not like they do now. And yes as a matter of fact when the government runs a loss I do feel the effects of that through higher taxes or no tax cuts. I feel the effect by the government taking money out of private hands to finace the debt and yes we as the people do pay for the governments debts who else would? So is the GPL the "only" way no not really I do think it is the best way. But any other way would be good. Letting the Univeristy, state, whoever charge for it is theft because at that point they took my money to provide services for me (and the rest of the people) and unless I get a cut of the profits they are making a profit by using my money and I get jack. If it is made open I *do* get better tech, fun stuff to play with, and a better job good. If it is kept closed I get the shaft bad. And people wonder why I voted for Browne.

Putting aside for the moment the question about if this is a work for hire or not. (I don't think it is) The question is who paid to have it written. In the case of most state schools and just normal projects the answer is going to be the tax payers and this would of course include you. Think about it you pay taxes part of those taxes pay your salary. In this case since the public paid for the code to be written it should be able to be used by anyone who wants to at will. The only way to guarntee then that I can use the work that I have paid for the CS staff at the Univeristy of Utah to write is for them to GPL it. To the extent that your school also gets federal money I hav paid (at least in part) for you to write code and I should be able to get and use the code I have paid for. :) In that case you must GPL it this is the only way to make sure I can use this code. I think this points out how silly it is for people to make money off of projects that are funded with taxpayer money. Baffle em with BS and maybe they will se the light.

I think that with the way it is now we will have the best of all possible worlds for the next 4 years basically complete gridlock. The governemnt will leave us alone and we will continue to work and play and maybe in that time we will be able to get rid of the electoral college and really have our vote count next time around. Seems to be happening more and more. Now as to the point of paying for software you don't *really* think this about paying for every piece of software that you use do you? I agree that if you use a piece of software you should pay for you should pay for it. I also think that it is better on several different levels to avoid the issue and use OSS. This way you can worry about running your business and not about the BSA getting a bullsh!t warrant against you and forcing you to defend yourself. Which is what most copyright issues in this country have devolved to.

This could of course get messy very quickly and IMO anybody who thinks that have law enforcement digging around on your machines would not be a bad thing is a idiot because once they go through the trouble to get a warrant and do it they WILL find something.
