Anyone who is not you is going to disagree with you on at least one issue that you think is important. Ok maybe you and a couple of other people in the world. The point of the matter is not who is right or wrong on any one issue. The point is does the persons overall view of the world and the role of governemnt fit with yours in such a way that you can see them doing a pretty good job. This is why I support Browne. Simply put he *is* wrong on some issues. But overall his viewpoint is that government should be very small do for me those few things that I, my family and my friends can not do for ourselves and get out of the rest of my life. This is a overall viewpoint I can agree with. Now some might say he is "wrong" on the spam question. But given the freedom to do so I can take care of a spam problem and there is ,IMHO, no good way to write a antispam law without having other freedoms be limited. Therefore because I can agree with most points and because I can really get behind the overall worldview I will be voting Browne.

Should they act as though there were. Yes I think so. My whole point was and is that they have their heads up their asses and that they do treat software as though it needs to bo controlled and limited. As for me I will not give such people my money. Most likely they mean that a large number of servers on which sites reporting news about the election were ,in effect, /.ed. But of course in 1996 it did not take alot to bring a site down with too many people a bit harder these days in particular for a big news site. Also most ISPs are much better today then they were at that point. Kind of silly but it does bring up the fact that most people out there do not understand at all what is going on in the tech world. Stories like this on /. make me sad come on people at least use the right terms and don't spread the ignorance of those who think that "the Internet crashed".

You are right in that most of the techies for whom this would be a good thing have been around for awhile and that these are the people who don't need it for the money but more for the taking care of the kids so they can get their job done sort of thing. I think that setting up a onsite deal would be overkill too much money and not enough people using it. But arranging for a last minute drop off at a place that is close to work and with whom the company has a good realationship would be a good thing. This would give them a good way to take care an emergency. I'm thinking that most of the techs who need something ongoing have arragenments with which they are happy and that the company just needs to provide a net for those days when things go wrong.

This is *very* true. I am a sysadmin type trying to get into programming. I know Perl ok and am just getting started with C/C++. With that background I can set down with the Linux kernel and read a bit and understand many parts. This is because it was designed to be understood and used by more than one person. I'm far from average at this point (a rank novice)and yet I can understand the kernel for a very complex and powerfull OS a true testament to those who have written and maintained it. So based on what I've done and seen I have to agree that a good or great programmer will write code that is obvious to even a novice, once it is written. Just like with you human language you can always read more than you could have written. Think of all the really great inventions all of them are brian dead obvious, once you see the solution. The ones that don't make sense don't get used. I think Greenspun likes the "hacker" myth just a little too much.
