    I blame the public schools for removing critical thinking concepts from their curriculum.

    That's their job. What parent wants to give their kid one more reason to start another argument? It's hard enough to make them shut up and eat their vegetables without filling their heads full Voltaire and Kant.

    That is a good thing. The layout on my browser is more than 15-years old, and I like it that way. Some of us like stability.

    As for Tor, screw them. It is not secure. If they want to shut it down, it will only serve as confirmation of its weaknesses. What we need is a system that can't be shut down.

    They can't disable it if you have updates disabled in the first place.

    Make sure to check that occasionally. I use their "security essentials" because all the anti virus programs are equally worthless, and it can change your update options when you're not looking.

  12. That option will soon be disabled also. Most people won't care enough to switch to anything else. The dependency is too powerful.

    Make an image of your system beforehand, so you can make a clean install from that if you need to.

    If you think there's less pain, is there, really? How do you know? Are the nerves still transmitting the same signal and the brain tunes out? Can that be measured without requiring a verbal response from the patient?

    Don't take this wrong. I firmly believe that prohibition must be abolished. I just don't like that we have to beg like this. There is no right to arbitrarily prohibit the possession and consumption of weed, especially without any scientific basis.

    The filtering system, using thresholds and moderation, available to Slashdot users is the best out there. And subscribers have it even better by controlling who can post in their journals.

    Posting through a proxy can defeat IP banning.

    The rules should be simple. If you want to filter something out, do it at your end. Don't try to control what other people can see or say. Nobody is forcing you to look and listen.

    Yes, more people will become more interested in circumvention. A whole new system that can't be brought down by vested interests may emerge. The survival of worldwide computer networking will depend on it.

    Look at the bright side, it could speed up the obsolescence of DNS and maybe the whole server/client setup and actually make the internet more robust against censorship. Ad hoc networking could become ubiquitous and make the ISP a useless antique. That would definitely be a good thing.
