    Pretty faint praise in light of how frail the system is (already been hacked years ago), as anything based on trust would be.

    Shouldn't matter. My computer goes 3 GHz. To me they are more interested in making excuses. My complaints are silly of course, considering the price I paid, and it is the best all around player, but, you know, c'mon... It's not that difficult. This is the very thing a computer should be able to do.

    No, money can only be regulated by the voter. They're either for it, or against it. It is trivial to track a politician's funding now and find out who they serve. Citizens United is the correct decision. It is the voters' obligation to turn their backs. If they fail, they have no one else to blame.

    The debate should be over where to draw the line, and who gets to draw it - not whether it should exist at all.

    Great, then let's not put the cart before the horse. Settle the first issue before imposing the second. And really, the question whether it should exist at all is perfectly valid. Cui bono?

    the design pattern is a sound concept

    Not if it's so easy to fuck up. systemd is like flying the plane with the autopilot, but you're not really flying the plane. The autopilot is a black box. That is not good if you can't work the machine when it breaks down. That point was just made by Boeing in Indonesia. But, if you can shut it off, great. Just make sure you really can and keep the machine running. It sounds like there are some dependencies that would prevent that though.
