"Their wire" = ISP, that single point of failure that will always answer to government demands for tracing, censoring, etc. Yes, the capability of both anonymous and encrypted communication is the goal. That cannot happen under the present circumstances. Until we build a robust ad hoc peer to peer network and dump the DHCP and DNS server/client model, we have no way to circumvent them yet.
Yeah, okay. That's not my argument, which is that company taxes are in the price of whatever it is they sell. If taxes go up, so does the price. The tax is just tacked on.
But the economy was never "unregulated". The big railroad and oil monopolies were a direct result of government protection and corruption that provided exclusive contracts and closed the market to the upstarts. This is the same reason we have no competition in pharmaceuticals, communications, media, internet service, etc. today
I don't believe companies really pay taxes anyway. They just raise the price to compensate. The argument seems to be who plays the part of tax collector for the government. And that should be the company's problem.
The seller doesn't want to do the paperwork of collecting the tax. I hardly sympathize. It's the cost of doing business. They can hire another accountant.
And it can go on indefinitely. But one thing to remember is that as long as we remain on their wire, the game is lost. Only true ad hoc or mesh networking can make the entire argument go away while also serving to minimize the state's advantage in communications. If we can't take away their power, then we have to at least balance it with our own. We need not waste time on discussing whether we should.
When a private company becomes an agent of the state, it should be subject to the same constitutional restrictions, but few people are willing to enforce that unwritten rule. Very unfortunate.
He's got to make the sale. Yeah, it's a shell game. Let's see who wins, or if there will any follow up on the story. Unless the "list" comes out, it should be treated as a scam. If it does come out, and it's authentic, chalk one up for the good guys.
you shouldn't act like it is "good enough", and that people complaining about it are wrong to complain.
It's "good enough" to prove my point that anybody can get on the ballot. Which is all I'm saying. I didn't say anything about it being easy, though it can be if people want. And people are perfectly welcome to complain all they wish, but unless it is followed up by their vote, it all means nothing, and makes them look dumb. Only they can change the rules. They either have to participate fully, or take what's coming to them. What I will never accept is this crap about the "system", as if it is separate from us. It is nothing but an attempt to evade responsibility for their own choices. We are the ones making the rules, either passively or actively, consciously or subconsciously. People just have to be more friendly with their neighbors and work together. The antipathy they share towards each other and the rest of the world is a big part of the problem.
Well of course yo do! Whether anybody listens is totally up in the air though. I mean, basically you're shouting at psychopaths, so I don't know how far that will get you.

Since Standard Oil was dismantled
Paper tiger. Standard Oil was never "dismantled". It became more like siamese septuplets... joined at the hip to this day...

You can't beat free...

Only briefly, if they do it suddenly and noticeably, which is not the way it happens.
I guess we're at a stalemate then.
All business seek to lock/snuff out competition.
And what makes a better tool than a government hammer?
It's a human thang. No need to separate anyone out.
so her posturing against companies that use government to shut the door behind them to keep competition out are a bit disingenuous
No, it is not. The only way a monopoly can exist is through government protection. Her "posturing" is spot on.
There's always something else...
They could make it that way, couldn't they? The airlines would probably like that.

Quid pro quo is as deep as it gets.
That high drama is not BS to Reddit's accountants... Every pound of it is pure gold.

And do they have a right to know that they're on said list?
Of course they do. That's why we need people to break in and take it if they don't cough it up voluntarily. If they can spy, we can too.

Ah, ok, I see what you're saying. I'd ask for my money back then.
Why? You have doubts? Take a look for yourself. It's right there...
I remember everyone saying, facebook wont be around in 10 years, something better will come along.
I'm pretty sure there already is something better, just not as popular.
