The whole notion that we need computers in every classroom is pointless.
Pointless.
I graduated in 2000, and I learned more from my at-home computer than the locked-down computers in my high school.
They restrict any real use, defeating the whole purpose of having it hooked up to the 'net! The web filter was absolutely painful. I remember this one time where a friend was trying to research marijuana for a school paper covering drug use. The teacher glanced at my friend's computer screen and after getting over the initial surprise of the website managing to slip through the webfilter's cracks, automatically banned him from the computer lab.
Nope... American schools aren't in trouble. No sir.
I use floppies every day. Damn Apple for not including a floppy drive with the iMac. Between that, their one-buttoned mouse, and their use of that proprietary thing called "yoonicks," I'm a switcher for life... a Windows switcher!
Maybe there should be some sort of government body which grants an operating system with some sort of security grade.
In America:
*beef is screened by the USDA... *perscription drugs go through the FDA... *cars are tested by the NHTSA...
Speaking of cars, back in the middle of the century, cars weren't even required to have seatbelts, or a whole slew of other things. Maybe the Internet actually needs some sort of government oversight? Perhaps I'm completely off-base here... just remember I'm speaking in terms of TCP/IP stacks and such, NOT copy control/prevention.
Am I the only one who could care less who owns the FM stations? FM should die. I'd rather see a nationwide WiFI network and the ability to tune-in streaming Internet stations.
More choice. More variety. Advertisers win because they can see concrete listener numbers. Radio stations win because they can profit from the advertizing. Listeners win because we'll have more choice.
So where am I wrong... other than the fact that WiFi isn't cut out to scale to nationwide proportions... (I think)
On one side, we have the Recording Industry Association of America. On the other side, we have Sharman Networks. Lopsided match, to say the least.
Maybe it's the American in me... but I hope the underdog wins.
Somehow, I feel that the future of computing as we know it is going to be decided in large part due to the outcome of this matchup and I for one am tired of waiting for the outcome. I'm tired of the constant rehashing of the legality of file sharing. I'm tired of the false numbers and statistics spun as proof that P2P is the sole culprit for declining music revenue.
Most of all... I'm tired of the threats of a DRM-enabled world.
I'm a music fanatic. I love all kinds of music. I used to buy music, but when Napster was taken away from me, I stopped.
When I pay to see concerts now, at least I take cautious comfort in the idea that the artists see a larger percentage of my twenty dollars. I hope, anyway.
So this dude bids on an Iomega Buz that I was trying to sell back in November 1999. In the terms of my auction, I clearly stated that PayPal and money orders were the only payment methods I would accept. Furthermore, I stated that payment must be received within a week of the auction's close.
So the winner of said auction sent me an eMessage asking if I'd accept COD. I say no, because I already stated in the terms that I would not accept COD. Cut and dry, right? Nope. Dude gets pissed and questions why I won't accept COD. Does it matter? I said no in the bidding terms!
A week goes by, and I receive no payment from him. I notify him that I'm going to offer the item to the next person down on the list, and post negative feedback to the seller for failing to follow through on the auction (read: failing to comply with a binding contract.) Out of retaliation, the guy posts this:
Complaint: NO GOOD SELLER,,SENT MONEY NEVER RECEIVED ITEM..BEWARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Obviously, anyone who uses all-caps and places two commas together is challenging to deal with, to say the least. As it stands, eBay won't remove the feedback, even though it is easily verifiable as libel. He never sent the money as I told him not to.
The worst part? He has a history of this shiat, and he fucked my otherwise perfect rating.
WTF is up with the lame comments along the line of "I can't believe they're doing this!" I get exactly what San Francisco city officials are doing... look at this word:
Sidewalk
no no no... go back and look at my emphasis. SideWALK.
The name alone characterizes itself as a separate place for pedestrians to move about a city or town block. The last time I checked, pedestrians != motorists.
In a small codebase, too. Take that, Mozilla! First KHTML, now a single 16-year old boy! And people think Microsoft produces bloated software./me runs and hides;)
First off, what gives? I'm a registered Republican, but what Gore said about the need for our schools to be fixed is absolutely true. Unfortunately, they need to be fixed by the communities themselves, not "Big Brother." Still, if anyone thinks American schools are in great shape, they're sadly mistaken and probably quite ignorant.
Secondly, Social Secutiry is broken. We all know this, on both sides of the political isle. But to say that getting people on Mars is more important than fixing SS has their priorities out of wack. I for one am quite pissed that I have to pay into a system which I'll never see a dime in return. But yeah! Lets go to Mars!
Finally, some would argue that universal health care, being a government undertaking, would end up being mismanaged and bad for Americans in general. To those who feel this way, I ask you: how is the current privatized HMO system working? Well, you say? Right. That's why it costs more than a thousand bucks to go to the emergency room... even *with* insurance.
Nope... no problems here! America is perfect! Lets go off to Mars so we can spread our perfection.
Even assuming that SBC does infact have a firm hold on this idea (read: an air-tight patent ownership) it's highly unlikely that it'll even make a difference. It'll be thrown out (and/or) ignored. Just look at the case where BT said they own(ed) the patent to hyperlinks.
What's next? Is Verizon going to claim they own the patent to "<img src>" ?
Wouldn't a giant electro-magnetic pulse work? Why waste our precious homing missiles on Iraqi GPS jammers when we could take out all of their electric military measures?
I refuse to buy a crapped out first edition to the G5. Even with that said, my G4 450x2 never comes across anything it can't handle, CPU wise. The only reason I'd update my hardware would be for new features. I wanna see built-in Bluetooth, WiFi Extreme, Serial ATA (or better yet, internal Firewire), Firewire 800, and AGPx4(+). And at this point in the game, a 300mhz(+) bus is essential.
If someone is bothering you with their cell phone chatter in a place such as a movie theater... "accidently" spill some of your cola on them. If cell phone users start to have some mild(?) public backlash, maybe they'll get the message. Too bad snacks and pop are so expensive at the movies...:(
but nobody wants to buy a PowerMac G4 when they feel a G5 is right around the corner. Unfortunately, anyone who watches the Mac scene knows that "G5s" have been around the corner now for two years.
I predict the largest problem for Apple is that even when the G5 finally ships, it'll be a lets-get-what-we-can-out-the-door-now type system based on the new IBM PowerPC/Altivec chip.
Personally, I hope Apple waits (...and waits...) until they have a box to really thump the x86 side of things again before they attempt to release anything under the title of a new generation.
Maybe things are different for you in your area, but I live in central Ohio, where most "soccer moms" drive minivans and sedans. Sure, there are those few who drive Excursions and the like, but they are definitely in the minority.
Personally... I need to have 4x4 in the winter. Without 4WD, I'd be stuck at home for days (weeks) after a snow storm. Anyone who lives on a hill knows what I'm talking about.
But we need to outlaw SUVs, you say. That means I can't have a vehicle that works in the winter simply because you think that by banning all sport-utes, America's energy problems will be (minimally) allieveated.
Linux drivers for my Wacom tablet! Err... uh... wait a minute.
EXACTLY.

They do such a wonderful job providing comic fodder all by themselves. Proof? Click here.
640k should be enough for anybody.

Pissed doesn't even begin to describe how I feel.
I wish someone would build a computer that would last a lifetime. We all know that 640k is good enough for everyone!

Chimera looks more Apple-like than Safari! WTF? Am I the only one who thinks Safari is great, but looks like a puddle of puke?
Actually, Safari would be great if it looked like Chimera, but kept (and improved) its webcore stuff.
At the end of the day however, the lack of tabs in Safari, plus the hideous UI, are what helps keep Chimera out of my trash can.

The first G4 motherboards sucked.
Apple and the movie studios are using Sorrenson 3 for their trailers. Can someone explain this for me?
Shouldn't they be using MPEG-4 in an effort transition people into the new format?

Brilliant!
And it's not like computer components can be and are reduced in size over time... what was I thinking.
