    Check out JabberView for a list of public servers, most of which have been online for more than two years.

    Most clients have default entries for the server (jabber.org in many Windows/Linux clients, or even the server run by the client developers).

    Nope, it was Mirabilis and they're Israelian.
    The agreement (linked in the article) also says Israelian law governs the specs (if you're not a citizen of the USA)

    uhm, I used to be a deranged Belgian kid (now I'm a deranged Belgian teen) and even if I would've wanted to, I couldn't have gotten a gun.
    If there's nobody with a gun, there's no way to get one (and I don't see kids going to illegal arms dealers).

    One on-topic remark: our telecom minister said on the radio this morning that prosecuting/molesting Napster users will have a very low priority ... prolly because everyone younger than 50 copies CD's and downloads MP3's anyway, it would be insane to try and stop it :-)

    Just my 2 eurocents ;-)

    Well today I played Reversi (not really an A.I. but still cool) on some guy's Siemens GSM ... don't remember the model but it also had chess and a whole array of other games.

    I just wonder why they don't run multiplayer competitions or something ... like GamesDomain Castle. C'mon marketing, there's a lot of money in entertainment!

    With telnet if you login and su to root anyone sniffing on the network just saw the root password. With SSH they see an encrypted stream.

    But if the attacker is sniffing, wouldn't they have also sniffed the key in the beginning of the session?

    If SSL/SSH doesn't protect people's passwords from MITM attackts, what _does_ it protect them from?
    Seriously, isn't encryption only protecting against MITM situations or am I missing something here? (I hope I am, otherwise this would all be one silly discussion!)

    Am I really the only one who thinks ALL hardware is OS independant? (yep, even WinModems)
    It's the OS that needs to adapt, not the hardware. (ask Apple! ;-))

    Other than that, this seems like a cool artifact ... not really worth buying though.

    btw, maybe change the /. poll from scroll lock to this thing?

    how can "default bookmarks" contain "personal information"?

    this new is so whacked ...

    there are numerous websites (Netscape, AltaVista, ZDNet, ...) that do this kind of thing. Advertisers want bang-for-buck so get over it and let people know what you visit on THEIR website!

    god, I wonder how many /. readers will read this in a rush and think M$ knows their every frickin' move :-(

    are you for real? LOL
    I happen to be working on a search engine and it's not much fun on a 56k modem with pay-per-second schemes ... the cable/ADSL folks here in Belgium get a fixed price (up to a point) so I pay up to 10 times as much while my connection is MUCH slower :-(

    nevertheless, I do the best I can with what I've got ... too bad my parents go nuts when they see $800 phonebills every 2 months :-(

    not where I live ... Belgacom (ADSL) will be here in a few months (or so they claim ...) but Telenet (cable) is gonna take atleast 6 months ...

    Until then I'm stuck on this 56K modem ... with insane prices (about $1 US / hour).

    anyway, just hold the right mousebutton down and hit the spacebar when the popup, euh, pops up.
    The release the right button and voilà, the menu.

    Also you might want to try that funky button (or shift+F10) between the right winkey and control. (just press TAB or F6 a few times if the page is framed)

    Anyone else got some handy shortkeys?

    I don't agree. Lots of people buy computers in stores where they put these annoying stickers on 'em so they can see if you opened the case (like on harddrives).
    So if you want your warranty you can't overclock (and put the clock back when you take it back to the store because it melted ;-))

    On the other hand, anyone who would just buy a computer in a store probably never even heard of overclocking ...

    actually I have one of those here, I bought it as a PII233 but the multiplier is unlocked up to 4.5 so I can run it at ~340MHz. Now if only I had my BF6 2 years ago, damn I would've owned in Q2 ;-)

    Well I'm still reading the Aristotle article you linked (damn, my modem nearly choked on that one! :-)).

    Even though english is a third language to me, I feel like there's a distinct difference between "inventing" and "discovering".
    It's not because Ari-dude was the first to actually notice/comprehend/care about the way things happen/work that he "invented" it.

    Random is a term used to describe the unknown, IMO. Kinda like religion, you believe in random or you don't.

    That's just the point, there doesn't have to be a "higher intelligence", there's only logic: the basic ruleset/instructions from which all intelligence is derived and therefore everything is completely predictable for someone who knows the basic instructions (yep, this turns the universe into one big computer :-)).

    Of course this leaves the question: how did the frickin' logic get there?
    Alas, there's no way to see the start of your own existance unless you create something similar (so let's create our own miniature universe or something!)

    Alteast that's the way I always figured the universe is built up ...
