He mentions nothing of Linux and as a matter of fact said that stimulation of local software development would be the right direction (translation go with your linux plans but leave the hardware to us). Now of course he is going to say this. I think in the short term they need to be trying to keep a finger on AMD which is about to make their lives miserable with the release of their 64 bit chip.
I have lots of linux boxes and I only boot them once every year or so just to say I did. Who cares if it takes a minute to boot when it is gonna be up for year anyhow.
It all depends on what you are trying to accomplish. I know a half dozen or so languages and use the one that gets the job done. I do however find myself reaching for python most of the time. It has reasonable speed, very maintainable and is one of the most productive languages in existance.
One of my issues with java, qt, gtk, wx windows etc is the layout crap. It always seems someone is ramming their super duper ultra cool widget layout engine down my throat.
Screw that crap, I want X,Y positioning and let me handle the darn layout specifics. In this reguard only borland has ever gotten layout working correctly.
No you don't get it... I use mini-itx boxes in a thin client environment. Yes it is a pc but I boot them from compact flash hanging off a ide adapter. It boots in ten seconds and is totally silent(no fans) and all solid state. Did I mention the whole rig costs 240 dollars...Oh yes the power supply is sealed and the machine only burns 17 watts in this configuration.
Great idea except that I have 125 users log into a single desktop server all at the same time. Pusing the kernel to all of them at once would kill the network. This is the same reason I don't use ltsp, I opt insted to use just xdm with a local linux mini distro.
I said a head hunter, recruiter...they where a windows shop anyhow, not like I wanted to work for them. I don't do windows, you might as well be putting a gun to your head when placing trust in a MS product.
Have you ever used MS transaction server? My point has been made.
Rich Client native gui, here you have two other cross platform choices..wxwindows and SWT both which offer native, fast gui's.
Microsoft Visual Studio the best? You obviously have never used any tool from Borland which absolutely stomps a mud hole in anything that MS has ever built.
Most commercial clients might run windows but I can tell you for a fact it it does not run on Linux we ain't buying it in our shop(sounds like I just shot your selling point all to hell). If you like java and you like C# and you sell software why on earth would you lock yourself to a platform.
Now that is a interesting point you have made. I had a recruiter call me the other week, she also asked me if I had.net experience. Some company was needing someone to build a manufacturing system, something that I have a great deal of expertise in. I told her if they want to build a system out of software barely tested enough to be called beta I want nothing to do with it.
But you still have not given me a reason to use it....In order to make the time investment it has to offer something better which it clearly does not. From what I know about it which is a fair amount just straight python stomps a mud hole in it.
I would have to agree you don't see much perl in web applications any longer. I have one chunk of perl left on a web site I maintain and the next time I have to mess with it I am converting that as well.
And python is my favorite choice for anything not related to web development. It is by far the most productive and maintainable language for business work.
If Dell is smart they do not have to own a web services stack. Dell just has to load Redhat and Jboss, no development cost, no r&d cost and a better solution. Sun forgets that packaged software is quickly being extincted by open source tools. Packaged software is a quickly dying business. The only hope for their survival is embrace and consult.

Cool MS now please put DRM into all of your software. When people cannot pirate your software easily I can sell even more linux.
Yea those extra six boxes might take at least 5 minutes more time a month to deal with. If it takes more than that you have the wrong admin.
In the last few hours I started receiving a new one I believe. This one attempts to autorun in outlook using the html view flaw.

TopCoder stuff is boring ... It consists of a bunch of coding exercises much like you are subjected to in school.
Why would create a free account on the Windows Developer Website. Hell you can get the same effect by visiting the goatse.cx website.

So what would the linux admin do for the other 364 days?
Now how am I supposed to believe a anonymous coward.

We run mini-itx booting from compact flash...total cost 250 and boots in 10 seconds...
Check out peewee linux....
Carly said it is all hype and we cannot use grid's for at least another 5 years. Obviously Carly does not read slashdot or own a Linux box.
Ok I will bite check this out....
/usr/X11R6/bin/X -query yourserver
1. Load Linux Server and turn on xdm
2. Change last line in inittab of linux client to the following
Damn if it ain't the same thing only no licensing costs...

Have you ever used MS transaction server? My point has been made.
Ok I will give you that it can run any language. So should I stop using python native and use python.net?
I still see no payback and nothing but lock in.
Ok,

What on earth is so great about .NET and or Mono. I see absolutely nothing about it that would make me desire to code with it.
Is it faster? No
Is Development Faster ? No
Is it cross platform ? No
Does it do things that other languages cannot? No
Is it Encumbered By Patents? Yes
Sure makes me want to use it....

Morphix command saveconfig will burn your config to a usb device.
Give slackware live or Vector linux a shot. I do not know if they have apm but they are one hell of alot lighter than knoppix.
