You take 5 years off, hold no job outside of the house, and then try to get a job in your chosen field. Good luck!
I spent 5 years getting a PhD (which is quite an achievement) and had a lot of trouble getting a job, because it wasn't in the same field as my education. It's not like I wasn't doing anything (programming is problem solving, then writing the answers in code... physics is problem solving, then writing the answers in code-speak!)
twitter babbled:
Very few women I know really like the "liberation" and "empowerment" of work. What double think.
Wow. I didn't know there were many Amish reading Slashdot. All of the childless women I know prefer working to sitting around at all day. Those women I know who do have kids have career aspirations, too. Staying at home for 5 years will kill any chance they have at a long, successful career in a field of their choosing.
When you have a child who ISN'T a rhesus monkey, then you can spout off about your experiences. In my experience, my son prefers being able to socialize with other children his age on (mostly) his own terms. He also is growing up without experiencing the stereotype that mothers should stay home popping out babies every year.
...and some people can afford to have kids, AND want to have a professional career. Not all of us feel that it is a wife's job to stay barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen.
Oddly enough, Katz included the *exact same link* at the end of his introductory paragraph. What I don't get is why he needed to copy the article after he linked to it. Maybe he didn't want the Daily Breeze to get any ad revenues off him.
I don't think it was the thought of selling the book with their comments included that angered the SlashDot readers. I think it was that they didn't want *Jon Katz* doing anything with their ideas, simply because they don't like him. If it had been Taco or Hemos, I don't think there would have been nearly as much outrage.
Thanks! That was the problem... I didn't have enough patience. I just saw the error.mov and quit.
I am sorely disappointed by the trailer, though.

I'll assume this isn't a troll... It's a fake. The scenes are from other movies that the actors have appeared in. Didja notice the scene where all the jedis are in a battle charging down a hill... in KILTS!?! Snip from Braveheart, color the swords like light sabres, et voila... instant jedi battle.
You can even find this 'trailer' on adcritic, where they admit that, even though it's a fake, it's a cool fake, so they're hosting it.
Well, thanks to being posted here, NewLine/Apple have apparently yanked all of the trailers. Huge isn't even an option, and the other three sizes all end up at apple.com with error_dnd.mov. Or is there something I'm missing? I didn't have any problems at all with the first trailer...
I saw it in last week's Sports Illustrated (which is at home, or I'd cite the page number). I don't really want to believe the story, but I'd say SI rates as a reliable media outlet.
Odd, I counted up the last century, and the breakdown is 52 years with Republican president and 48 with a Democratic president. (Deomcrats won the election in 1912, '16, '32, '36, '40, '44, '48, '60, '64, '76, '92, and '96; obviously Republicans won the other 13 times.) Looks like it's as even as it can get.
I hardly call that "most of the century."
And really, how much do you think the success/failure of the US has to do with the President? The US Congress has FAR more domestic power than a single figurehead. As commander-in-chief, the Pres has power over the military, but we haven't had a civil war in 135 years, so that hasn't been a domestic concern lately.
IMO, it doesn't matter which bobbing-head-doll we elect President. I'm far more concerned about Congressional (Senate and HoRep) elections.
the Republicans, for all their faults, have always done right by our country.
Really? Then explain the recession of the 80s. Explain the rapid growth on Wall St. in the past decade. Explain why interest rates for mortgages are about half what they were in the early 80s. (OK, these last two are tied together... but still important.)
Yes, that means policing the food they eat. Without the FDA, we'd all be eating food laden with sawdust.
Hogwash. This is the same kind of scaremongering nonsense employed by gun controllers, anti-home schoolers, and most other
nanny-statists. Do you honestly believe that there's enough of a market for sawdust-laden food that an industry that produced it as opposed
to clean, healthy food could remain profitable for very long? Do you honestly believe there are not and could never be market alternatives to sawdust-laden food producers?
Might I suggest you read The Jungle by Upton Sinclair, published in 1905... This is the book that brought about the existence of the FDA. In that book, there are things that will make you want to eat nothing you didn't grow/kill yourself. I haven't read it since senior year of high school, over a decade ago, but when I think of it, I still get somewhat nauseaous.
If corporations were not forced to adhere to strict rules on food production, the result would be that, because it is cheaper not to follow these rules, they would be producing foodstuffs of lower quality. If a competitor came along, and offered high quality food at a higher price, which do you think the lower class would choose? Most likely the stuff that will allow them to eat their fill (who really wants to 'enjoy' the feeling of an empty stomach all day?). This already happens. When was the last time you saw someone buy a round of brie and a bottle of Mouton-Rothschild on food stamps?
The problem with a flat rate is that it is either too low, and the government doesn't have enough money for things like public school, roads, etc. (I imagine even libertarians see the need for these things), or the rate is high enough that it is an unfair burden on the lower class.
As I said in another post, 30% of $100k/yr still gives you $70k NET to live on (more than I gross a year, and I have a pretty good job). Take 30% a year away from someone making $25k/yr, and you leave them with $18.75k/yr. That hurts.
Now before you gripe about that amount, $25k/yr works out to around $12.50/hr, about what a construction worker makes around here. I'm not talking about some welfare mother with 5 kids, but about an everyday blue-collar worker doing a very important job. Hell, policemen around here (in RTP, NC) only make about $30k/yr. They had to remove the clause in their contracts stating they had to live in the county in which they worked. The police force realized they weren't paying enough for them to live on in Wake Co., so they were allowed to move to an adjoining county. The same thing is going on in SV, CA as well.
The poorest 10% propably pay less than 3% of the taxes. That's "disproporionately" for ya, is it fair ?
Yes. If you make $100k/yr, and pay 30% in taxes, you pony up $30k. Take a low income family that only makes $35k/year. You think it's fair to make them live on $5k/year, just so you can feel better about not paying more than they did? I bet it would be REEAALL easy to live on $70k/year NET income. I'd be willing to try... (in case my boss reads/.)!!!
It's been since the summer of 1993 since I used a VMS machine, but you've pretty much got it right. Each archived version was a complete copy (as opposed to some sort of smart diff file). purge was your friend, especially if you were working on a class project that had to be compiled over and over to kill all bugs!
If you read the article, you would see that (in the third paragraph) it claims that 30-some *private* universities including Dartmouth already have this requirement. RTLinkL.
The point is that the University of Massachusetts system is going to do this, not just one campus.
I don't know about Mass, but in NC, there is one university called The University of North Carolina (the one in Chapel Hill), several others that go by The University of North Carolina - City X (Wilmington, Charlotte, Greensboro, etc.) and others that do not bow to the wishes of UNC-CH (NCSU, ECU, etc.)
OTOH, there is a University of North Carolina system of 16 campuses, of which UNC-CH is but one campus.
There's the difference... statewide school system vs. one college.
By this logic, you are implying that the 90% of American citizens who are NOT veterans of the armed services should get out too... Fat chance. I'm glad you spent 10 years of your life defending the belief in freedom, democracy and the flag. Made it so I didn't have to. Thanks, I appreciate it, but I ain't going anywhere.
You're right about the lunar missions, but the Hubble repair mission was done by the space shuttle, which is not designed to go beyond the van Allen radiation belts. Hubble is in the same type of near-Earth orbit that the shuttle takes, not geosynchronous orbit like communication satellites. Remember, the only reason for geosynchronous orbit is to stay stationary above one point on the Earth. Hubble has not these concerns. It's looking the other way!
I never said it was the techies that were using the drugs... just mentioning the rate of seizures. And you're right. The club drugs are predominantly used by the hoards of students around here.
I know the article was implying that the techies here are drug-addicts, but I don't see a need to argue with the author. I doubt he reads/.
