  3. Re:Carl Sagan equation on Are We Alone in the Universe? · · Score: 1

That's the first thing that came to my mind too. Here's the quote:

There are some hundred billion (10^11) galaxies, each with, on the average, a hundred billion stars. In all the galaxies, there are perhaps as many planets as stars, 10^11 x 10^11 = 10^22, ten billion trillion. In the face of such overpowering numbers, what is the likelihood that only one ordinary star, the Sun, is accompanied by an inhabited planet? Why should we, tucked away in some forgotten corner of the Cosmos, be so fortunate? To me, it seems far more likely that the universe is brimming over with life. But we humans do not yet know. We are just beginning our explorations. The only planet we are sure is inhabited is a tiny speck of rock and metal, shining feebly by reflected sunlight, and at this distance utterly lost."

I'm exactly same, except I'm 23. And not only do I think I have an above average pain tolerance, but I've been told this by medical professionals: by my high school football team's trainer (when I had a severely in-grown toenail), by an orthopedic surgeon (when I had apophysitis), and by an oral surgeon (when I had my wisdom teeth removed and developed "open sockets").

In fact, they all said pretty much the same sentence: "Wow! You must have a really high tolerance for pain."

One thing I noticed about the article is this: all the subjects were female. Perhaps their conclusions should be restated to say that "redheaded WOMEN require more anesthesia."

AMD licensed the EV6 Bus from DEC for use with K7.

  19. Re:Criminals shouldn't be lauded on Mitnick Ordered Off Lecture Circuit · · Score: 1

[ I haven't had the time to read all of the other replies, so I hope this isn't redundant, but here's what I need to say. ]

The fact of the matter is, you either believe that anyone who is a criminal should be allowed to make money off of their crimes, or you are a hypocrite. So what is it?

It's neither. I am for the Constitution. I am for my Bill of Rights.

Amendment I: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

As you see it's not as simple as agreeing or disagreeing with a criminal's actions. Do I condone a murder's criminal activity? No. Do they have the right to write a book describing their crimes or how to be a murder yourself? Yes. Do others have the right to read this book? Yes. Do others have the right to act out this book? Of course not.

So does Kevin Mitnick have the right to become a speaker? Of course. Denying this would deny him his First Amendment Rights of Free Speech. Denying this would deny others their First Amendment Rights to Peacefully Assemble.

But more importantly denying a criminal's rights to "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness" after he has served his time would be the worst violation, for these right's are "unalienable."

In conclusion, if you are an American or if you believe in the Bill of Rights, you must help fight for Kevin Minick's rights. It doesn't matter if you agree, disagree, or are indifferent towards his actions. The rights to Freedom of Speech, Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness are the most important rights a person has. Without these we cease to be human. Violating one person's "unalienable" rights eventually violates everyone.

Why would anyone use an alpha processor?

Well performance for one. Have you seen the specs on these things?
And like the other Anonymous Coward pointed out: quality.
You have to think of this not as a Compaq product but as one from Digital Semiconductor. The guys who not only created Alpha, but StrongARM, PCI Bridge, and other networking components (e.g. Tulip). To me, Digital Semiconductor is the most respected name in the industry.

Now the real question: Why would anyone use an Intel processor?

I'll be the first to point out that I have limited experiance with the x86 architecture. But I'll also be the first to point out that this architecture is terrible! I mean when I think about the performance (and quality) that goes into the majority of the worlds desktops -- as an engineer and geek I'm disgusted!
