So in what context is the entire second amendment important? You omit & ignore the parts of the bill of rights that you don't like? It seems that the NRA likes to do that too. Engraved in the stone at the entrance to their HQ in DC is only 2nd part of the amendment they hold so dear, only the half of the amendment that furthers their political agenda. If you're going to use the 2nd amendment as the basis for an argument, at least have the balls to quote the whole thing.
(BTW, In this context, I think "well trained" is an excellent idea. Each person who would like to bear arms should be well trained - in the armed forces - before being permitted to do so.)
Will someone please address Slashdot's recent server troubles? I have to reload multiple times to get a working page. These errors aren't normal, and at the very least, you owe an explanation to the paying subscribers.
Well maybe if they used Windows instead of that newfangled Linux thing, it would be more reliable.
Actually, on the highway that I regularly take to work (#407 across the top of Toronto) 110km/h is far safer than 50km/h, as anyone driving at 50 would be way below the flow of traffic, and an extreme hazard to other drivers.
SCOTUS is an acronym for Supreme Court of the United States. It came about after the President started being referred to as POTUS, and the first lady as FLOTUS. Anyone else know of other OTUSes?
You miss my point. The in-flight shootout between hijacker and NRA members doesn't just endanger those on board, who took a calculated risk, but as we learned the hard way, also endangers the lives of people on the ground, and in tall buildings, who did not opt in to the risk of flights free of security checkpoints.
I have lots of issues with the libertarians, but this one statement is the ultimate silliness:
...and airlines should be able to offer a "we don't check anyone" option if they desire...
If there were an airline that didn't check passengers for weapons as they boarded, then which ones do you think the bad guys would fly? Before 11/09/01 I would have glossed over this one, but now we know that an airline with lax security puts far more people at risk then just those on board. The problem I have with libertarians is the same one I have with the ACLU. They take principled positions to silly extremes, and even where I might otherwise tend to agree with their principles, one would be foolish to follow them all the way to those extremes.
The reason the government run entity would be better, is that its objective would be the delivery of the service in question (in this case welfare, but this applies to other services as well). In the case of a private corporation, the sole objective is profit, and the delivery of the service is merely a means to that end. If the corporation wished to increase profits, it could simply reduce the level of service. If you try to police the private company, then you just recreate the level of buracracy that you were trying to get rid of.
The other important consideration is of course the profits. If the company is making a x% profit, then its service either has to cost x% more, or provide x% less benefit to the customer. Either way, our tax dollars would go not only to the service in question, but also to the profits of the corporation. This is the one thing that Libertarians always seem to ignore in their calculations. And advantage gained by privatizing a government service is immediately lost to the profits of the company running that service.
The Democrats are right-wing conservatives (with a few exceptions, such as centrist Ted Kennedy) and the Republicans are extreme right-wing ConservoFacists. (Cool, I just invented a new word)

I'd wager that you are building some brand of North American car. Honda does things quite differently, as I'm sure most Japanese and European manufacturers do.
Do you realize the implications of this? You are effectively saying that Gore clearly won Palm Beach, by a wide enough margin to make it clear to exit pollsters, and because of poor ballot design, the opposite result was reached! This makes a mockery of the entire democratic system! What the hell is the point then of an election!?

If the list was private, how would they know who not to call?

or maybe, just maybe, they aren't really as serious a threat as the gov't would have us believe?

ok, so pass a law that nobody can buy a gun unless they are well trained. How would that go over with the NRA?
I would find that obscenly and absurdly discriminating!
Now, an "under 17000 UID" club would be an excellent idea...
