    Apparantly, its not just Soviet Russia. It happens in the USA now too. Quite sad, actually, that the cold war was fought for 50 years against a totalitairan regime, only to win, and take on some of the elements of that regime ourselves.

    Unfortunately, this is an urban legend. The reason not to use pencils is the tiny particles of graphite would get into the air, and that would be really bad to breathe, and also have an adverse effect on some systems.

    Actually, it will cost less, because of the economies of scale involved with buying a million of each component at a time. (Same reason Canadian drugs are so much cheaper: the government negotiates volume prices with the drug companies.)

    As a pioneer in his field, Jef's work did create controversy, and there were always those who sought to shoot him down. I had the opportunity to meet Jef at MacHack the year he did the keynote, and although he seemed very sure that he was right, it was because his ideas on human interface were based on sound principles, and he really did know what he was talking about.

    There is truth to the rumor that he never got along with Jobs, although he was good friends with Woz.

    The difference is that the EU is continuously growing, adding new members every few years. Look for this trend to continue until it includes all of Europe, and the EU border extends to Russia in the east, and Lebanon to the south. When that happens, those numbers will be much closer to each other, and coupled with the collapse of the US economy due to the fiscal irresposibilty of the current administration, I predict that the EU will supass the US within 18 years.

    I agree that the second amendment is just as important as the first and the fourth. The second amendment, however, has its very own organization (several, in fact). The ACLU should stick to what it does best: defending the first and fourth amendments, and leave then second amendment to the NRA.

    So do what I do anytime I encounter a red light and there is no traffic around: Turn right, make a U-turn, then turn right again. (Assuming that your jurisdiction permits right turns on red, as mine does). Also, do it really fast; its more fun ;-)

    I think you've hit on a new definition of free. We all know "Free as in Free Speech" and "Free as in Free Beer", I propose a new category: "Free as in Free iPod" defined as something that is advertised as free, but actually involves a pyramid scheme or some other scam that makes it non-free.

    When its this close, you make sure you get it right. If that means a statewide recount, then so be it. Whats the downside of recounts as long as its done by January 12th?
