I don't feel that I am demeaning Apple. At least that wasn't my intent. I am just pointing out that the article states that "Apple seems behind" and I am pointing out that, they always seem to be behind.

That doesn't diminish their products. I just think that some people seem to be mistaking Apple for a company that they have never been.

  16. If the box was just command execution (like the Run box) then I would agree with you. But it is more than that. It is a mixed search/command execution box which is really super handy as far as efficiency goes. Meta key > type 1 to 3 characters > enter, is much more efficient than Meta key > P > up/down arrow > right arrow > up/down arrow > enter. If you are just using the mouse then the efficiency is not quite as pronounced since you have to switch back and forth.

  17. Screw the right-click business. One nice thing about the Windows UI (just like most Linux UIs) are the keyboard shortcuts. Meta+X is the way to get the admin menu on 8.1 and forward.

But yeah, I agree with you about the start menu. Every time I go back to an XP era (still have a couple 2003 boxen) start menu, my blood pressure rises...

The Windows 8 full screen start menu is annoying, but I will take that over XP/2003 any day.

I have only built AMD systems for nearly 20 years. My current AMD system is almost 4 years old now but still drives 5760x1080 pixels in most modern games with reasonable quality and frame rate (30fps or more). It also boots in less than 10 seconds and is an all-around snappy computer. I have not yet found a reason to upgrade.

They are the person where the "buck stops". Apple has a bad year? Blame the person at the top. Apple had a great year? Praise the person at the top.

That's a lot of pressure. I think I would pass on 9 million/year for that kind of responsibility. I live ok. I don't have access to all the toys, but I am relatively happy with what I got.

  20. Try doing that on a hundred new computers.

One way to handle this is get the start menu how you want on a single computer, then use PowerShell to run Export-StartLayout. Then on the 100 computers, you script the import using Import-StartLayout.

The monitors are only 1080s but that is good enough for me.

When I go into game mode I use eyefinity to create a single display port 5760x1080 which works excellent.

When I am in work mode, I break the eyefinity configuration so I can maximize windows to individual screens. I generally have several terminals open on one monitor, e-mail and web browsing on another and remote desktop or misc windows on the third.
