  1. Who is your audience? on Computing Pet Peeves? · · Score: 3, Insightful

What an average slashdot reader wants in a program is completely different than the vast majority of computer users.

The majority of people on slashdot are programmers, unix administrators, and the like. These types of people usually want different things than most mainstream computer users.

If you're going to write opensource software, go ahead and follow their advice.

If your intention is to make money, take a look around and see what programs are making the most money. Say what you want about Microsoft and AOL, but you can't deny they make a shitload of money.

My best advice is this: Ignore everything you read on slashdot. Look at which software companies are making the most money, then try to determine why people are spending money for their programs.

  2. Process scheduling on Andrew Morton And The Low-Latency Kernel Patch · · Score: 5, Interesting

I've been waiting for years for Linux to have finer control of process scheduling.

I hope someday that Linux will use a method similar to Irix, where you can specify a priority from 0 to 255, modify it's timeslice, and make it realtime or timeshared. This was one of the best things about Irix, and something I could really use for Linux.

But what has debian really contributed to the Linux community? Apt-get??? Maybe there is something really useful debian has made, but I certainly can't think of any right now. Please feel free to englighten me.

Stop being a typical linux sheep and start thinking for yourself. When you open your eyes you might come closer to seeing things the way they really are. Linux developers are motivated by money and ego, not "altruism".

Debian users are hypocritical. There's non-free, which is a part of their distribution. Why is it included if they're so sincere? All debian users use it. So what's the big deal?

Face it, capitalism works. It even works with opensource software, which is why Redhat, Suse, etc, are all much better distributions. There's no opensource project which is written "for the good of the community". The vast majority of opensource software are written in order to make money.

How many of the main linux developers work for redhat? VA? Suse? Linus used his fame to get a job he wouldn't have otherwise got. Developers also love to write and sell books and get paid well by publishers like o'reilly. Good for them. Don't alienate people about licenses and with your elitist attitudes.

Debian developers are the scum of the Linux world. Boycott Debian! BOYCOTT DEBIAN! BOYCOTT THE FUCKING DEBIAN GOAT FUCKERS THEN RAPE THEM UP THEIR FUCKING STINKY ASSHOLES WITH A GODDAMN FUCKING RUSTY RAZORBLADE

  20. Re:SGI on HDTV On Your PC And Hard Drive · · Score: 2, Informative

I used to work exclusively with SGI hardware and software in a broadcasting environment. HDTV output is fairly new in the SGI world - I'm thinking it came out about two years ago. This HDTV input/output board was made only for the very high end servers (only onyx2 servers afaik). Information about the HDIO card is here.

It is not supported in the most common machines used at TV stations, the Octane and the O2. There have been rumours that an HDTV card was being developed for the Octane, but as far as I know it hasn't been released.

SGI hardware is, IMO, overpriced. We usually would buy a barebones system (no memory, no monitor, etc) and then buy the parts from third party vendors. At the same time, SGI and the Irix operating system offers much more than you can get out of a standard windows or macintosh system, such as really fine grained scheduling control, guranteed I/O and frame rates, which is very important to engineers.

PC's are improving (and in many areas surpassing), but are not yet at the level of SGI servers for specialized broadcasting environments.
