    Apple not giving back? Darwin is completely open sourced, qtss is also, openplay, cdsa (data security architecture), and a slew of documentation are all available on opensource.apple.com...

    You don't know what you're talking about. Apple's hardware isn't that over priced anymore, their software kicks the shit out of many of it's competitors. It's based on open source technology, and they give back. What's your problem?

    Sun released a JDK because their Cobalt customers demanded support that wasn't there before. Sun is jumping on the bandwagon fast with their "Cobalt OS"...that and the user interface are the reasons they bought Cobalt Networks.

    You won't find them helping too much with a SPARC port of Linux, but they release cheap x86 hardware to run their software.

    Falling sales that are being seen are from me not buying new cds anymore but going to different stores and paying $5 for a used one. Therefore they don't get the $15 from me! Also, i tend to buy from very small stores that don't have deals to give some of that money back.

    Sun Microsystems uses Linux on their level I/II tech support for the cobalt appliances. I think there are 8 of them right now.

    What you lost was expected revenue. Something you can NEVER guarantee. I hate when customers call complaining about them losing money.

    I lost some money once...it was a $20 bill and since then I've stopped putting cash in my shoe...

    Sun Microsystems now owns a company called Chilisoft. There product Chili!ASP works perfectly with ASP code. There's NO reason to use any Microsoft IIS server if you're complaint is ASP code.

    I have been using gentoo now since rc5 was first released. It's really good. A little buggy, but what do you expect from a pre 1.0 release?

    The portage system is a great idea and they are fixing bugs with every release. Rc6 is definitely usable.

    Can't hurt to check it out, right? The only real problem is the install, but if you know chroot, there isn't a problem.

    I can honestly say I do not find cars whizzing by at 200+mph interesting at all. I have better things to do with my time than sit and watch TV or waste money watching cars speed around a track like greyhounds.

    debian has apt-get

    I'm not sure about mandrake or suse yet, but, hell, there really is no excuse to not updating your system. *shrugs*

    I don't know of a better x86 system for $1000. 500 Mhz UltraIIe's will probably beat any PIII out at the moment. Now for the ia64, who knows.

    I don't do benchmarks, they don't convince me, i need to compile a kernel or two, xfree86 and such before I will compare systems.
