  1. Re:Woah on Subverting Fingerprinting · · Score: 2, Informative

that was likely a low tech scanner. Just because it says it scans for fingerprints doesn't mean it really does and just like in any other field you get what you pay for. I work on biometrics projects at my school and one of the labs I used to work in had a hand geometry scanner, made a dozen or so measurements of the length and such of fingers one of the older and less secure methods, it required an id number because while unlike fingerprint hand geometry is good for a one to any search. meaning that it will only confirm an id because mostly the accuracy is so low compared to what it would need to determine different people without combining other security vectors. Just keep in mind not all scanners are created equal and not all modalities, different biometric paths such as fingerprint iris and many others, are equal and they can be easily combined to increase security in a similar way multiple passwords adds security and it needs to be tailored to the application just like any other security approach. and just like all other methods of security it is a cat and mouse game.

People will use violence to get their way good or bad. Assuming people never have bad intentions it is because they are not always correct. If you are going to say that just because we have gone 8 years without anyone getting shot as your measurement of success ... Bush did do some other things to suppress dissent but I would say that is because government is there to mostly keep order and what is "right" is a secondary concern. We are hardly an old country and have many years before we approach the length of a few other nations most of which were much more suppressive, wonder if that is coincidence, so just because we say we are the guiding light of this world means nothing we have just been able to convince the rest of the world for the time being. Eventually people will be tired of participating in government at such a low level and we will resort to more centralized power structures. And finally that VP shooting incident is nothing nefarious it is the same kind of accident that has taken countless hunter's life so don't treat it like it is a joke.

What all this obsession about who actually won the Iranian presidential vote masks is IT DOESN'T MATTER WHO IS PRESIDENT OF IRAN. Sorry for the all caps but that really needs emphasis. The Supreme Leader holds all control over foreign policy decisions, security and so forth even nuclear power/weapons. I mean come on you can't even run for President of Iran with out approval of the Supreme Leader. Ahmadinejad only has control over domestic policy and even then as long as the Supreme Leader approves. He is there as a bargaining chip, if he attracts too much heat internationally or domestically he will be thrown under the Revolutionary bus so that the Ayatolla can find someone else to implement his policies.

Depends on the circumstance. Yes it is hard to download 10,00 child porn images and over 40 hours of videos. One image however? I am pretty sure there is more going on here than just this one image. Was he suspected of something else? Someone really not like him? Was he a thorn in someones side? The FBI knows they have better things to do, especially if it took them a year to knock on his door. They could have only known about him downloading that image when he downloaded it most likely from a trap. If it was mislabeled and downloaded from an FBI server set up to find people downloading these images I would be all over an entrapment case like I might have to go to jail for 20 years. He would be best served however by not going public about this because if he does go to jail and someone recognizes him, well that wont make you any friends.

your current phone costs $500, if you got one of those fancy pda ones less if it is a less advanced phone, you just don't pay for it directly. Instead you enter into a contract with the phone company which you pay a monthly fee. Part of that monthly fee is payment for phone service the other part is essentially to pay off a loan on that phone. Service providers know you are not big on large up front costs so they pay $400 for the phone give it to you and charge for your monthly service and then another $34 a month to pay off the phone for a two year contract.

It is more of a question of risk. It is much easier to catch a criminal who has killed someone, also much more incentive, but it is much harder to catch someone who has illegally copied something. In this case they know that if the punishment is harsh enough many people will hear about it and know what the penalty is. Now before you go complaining about making examples of people you must remember that reward=risk*gain if succesful. So something with low gain AND high risk of loosing the investment will not have a good reward because you will be more likely to loose your investment. On the flip side something with very small benefit i.e. watching the latest harry potter movie for free saving $20 for the dvd and a small risk of being caught combined with small punishment will be profitable for you to watch it illegally. So if you don't want your potential customers to steal your product instead of paying for it you have to either lower the benefit by lowering the price, up the risk of being caught or up the cost of being caught. By lowering the price below what most people are already willing to pay(by evidence that hollywood is making money) you loose some income that you could have made if you charged more, upping the risk requires effort to catch the people making illegal copies while increasing the cost of being caught is simple as hiring a few lawyers and telling them to get anything they can in the few cases people are caught.

The problem is not any specific organization but organizations in general. You only have to have a few "bad apples" realize that they can take advantage of the organization by doing stuff and if the witnesses are also members of the organization they will want to deal with the problem privately to avoid bringing a bad name to the organization which is tainted by a few bad individuals. The problem gets worse once the bad apples gain most of the power in the group and then force its members to go along still while they think they can change it from the inside because basically all you can do then is either change the group as a whole or leave and admit that the group that you thought was good really isnt weather or not it started out that way.
