I understand that Slashdot likes to send the top 10 highest scored posts. But there were a LOT of Score:5 posts.
Why not change the rule to "Top 10 highest scored posts, or all score:5 posts, whichever is larger"?
That way there won't be conspiracy theory behind which posts you choose, and you let the slashdot population hear all the answers they thought were important.
Honestly, I don't think the person answering the questions wouldn't mind more questions (although, there were like 20+ score:5 posts), but you can always say "answer the questions you like, combine some, and skip some if you like", that way its the answerer that can pick and choose.
I know this won't be a popular post to most slashdotters, but Tolkien was a devout christian (he converted CS Lewis to christianity), and several theologists suggest that his stories parallel many christian stories/tales. They even suggest that Gandalf was an "Angel" more than a "wizard" (which almost sounds like an excuse, so they can read the books and watch the movie, but I digress).
I don't have any links right now, nor do I necessarily believe that this is the case, but I thought it might add to the discussion.
Maybe the great working is playing the games for a living...
Depends, really. The guys that review games (like PC Gamer), yeah... they have a fun time playing different games all the time. But its hard to get into just one game, seeing that you play like 4 a week. Then there is the QA guys, that play the same game for like 2 years. That might be fun for the first week, but really boring the rest of the time.
How many (h/cr)ackers are trying to find holes Mozilla vs. IE?
I do, though, concede your second point (best is how you measure it), but from all the reviews I've seen, IE takes the cake on everything but speed, which it is second to Opera. Although, security is never an option, I think it is because of my first point (people taking advantage of the browser with largest user-base).
If you've read slashdot for a while you'd notice that we tend to dislike Microsoft for other reasons it's just that with the recent influx of people using freesoftware/opensource etc etc it's brought alot of new people into the ring. These people scream in digust at Microsoft for all the wrong reasons. They aren't apart of opensource or the free software movement..
Wow, I wish you woulda logged in to write that, cause that has to be the most polite, informative speech I have yet to hear. A true Open Source visionary.
I think you are what a true Open Source advocate should be. I must know your username/email so that we can talk in a much less biased atmosphere (or put a post in my journal or something).
Why? Because at times like these when the FBI is engineering Trojan horses to be snuck onto people's computers--and the US antivirus industry has capitulated--closed source operating systems, browsers and other software seriously lose credibility with anyone desirng privacy.
Dude, lay off the Deus Ex.
Mozilla and Konqueror might not do everything that IE can do, but they have 80-90% of its functionality. Try KDE under Mandrake 8.1 and you'll see just how far OSS has come.
I run SuSE 7.2 with KDE at home, actually. WinME on my gaming machine. I'm not insulting OSS, I'm just insulting the zealotous. If people want open source to rule, they need to be more humble, open, and not so elitest. Because most of those that make the decisions in computer companies get completely turned off by closed-visioned, zealotous elitests.
Outlook is most of them. And I never claimed that Outlook is a great email program. Not to mention the hundreds of clueless users that open any attachments sent to them.
And if I was to create a browser virus, I'd target the most used browser, and the browser that the "clueless-mother-type" users use.
That isn't an insult to IE, but for computer/internet learners, IE is the browser they learn on.
If linux was the biggest OS and Mozilla the largest browser, I think you'd find more Virii in linux and mozilla.
Target the many, target the weak (users). That's what virus writers do.
I have to agree about the anti-microsoft atmosphere here. Not only with this statement but all the "It deletes IE!" "It installs Mozilla!" jokes just make you people look like you are desperate to fit in. Its pathetic!
IE is the best browser out there. Check ANY review. And MS has jumped to fix a bug that everyone found (notice the GAPING HOLE in Solaris/AIX systems that still isn't patched? Why aren't you going off on that?)
Remember when you had to purchase Netscape, but IE was free?
Mozilla MAY -become- better, but it isn't, yet. If you give me that "IE doesn't run in Linux" then why are you even posting to this article?
You guys need to be less Open Source/Anti-Microsoft Zealotous.
I'd post anonymously to preserve karma, but the authors already know my IP (see sig).
Slashdot already discussed using Satellites in the same scenario (as solar plants beaming microwaves as energy). Which is how I presented this article when they rejected it.
Do you think other operating systems have a chance to actually compete with microsoft? What operating system do you use (be honest)?
If you are using Windows, what can other OS's do to make you switch?
If you aren't using Windows, what made you switch?
Has anyone really just asked "One Question Per Post"? I guess these are all related and can be answered all together... sorry.
To add onto your point, he did state that he learned perl in a couple weeks without much programming background. Most of slashdot has a heavy programming background, therefore we've all dabled in perl here and there (I used it during my college co-op).
So, yes, you're correct. He is making some big assumptions. My only beef with perl is the kludgy OO components (I'm a big OOP fan).
Design Patterns are usually OOP. Perl's OO is a kludge fest and should have never been added. Don't get me wrong, perl is a great language, but when it comes to OOP, I think python is a better choice.
According to Slashdot, your IPID is "8e451..." Mr. Ska's IPID is "b18e8..." Whoop. Big invasion of privacy there.
Can you expand on that? If I wanted to make an anonymous comment, on an article that I already posted on as "FortKnox", will they both be the same 'IPID'?
Point being, number or crypted number, it doesn't matter, cause our "so called" anonymity is nothing for people that have posted with logged in account.
Please, also note, my non-agressive demeanor, and non-insultive attitude. I'd appreciate it if you'd show the same to the others posting in this journal entry.
Out of all the complaints on slashdot about slashdot, if you replace those with "complaints about censoring/law/patents", and replace JonKatz bashes with "Microsoft Bashes", what do you have? (If you're really dense, the answer is 'slashdot articles')
Just because I'm complaining about something not the norm, should I (or the parent) be called an "asshole"??
BTW - mike, your professionalism needs some tweeking (if you want to get technical you are at your job speaking to your audience). I hope your future employers look at your posts to your 'clients'.
You come into my journal to call me a child for having over 700 comments posted?
Perhaps, when an intersting topic comes up, I post not only my opinions, but argue with others opinions? Maybe I like to defend my opinions?
You want to talk about childish, then lets speak of the censorware project, shall we?
I'd been DYING for authors to come in here and give their arguements so we can sort this crap out, but you come in here to insult me?
Who's being the child, michael?
You just proved to me what all the trolls say about you.
And as far as "getting out more", I have a well paying job, a wife, a son (next May), and a life.
What about that "dumbed down PC" that reads swiped cards, or the "dumbed down PC" known as XBox, Nintendo, Playstation, or that "dumbed down PC" that is in your car?
I think the term "specialized computer" may be better used, but everything electronic is a dumbed down computer of some type....
TiVo came up with a great idea, had lots of people copying them, made a patent and won it. Now they are making money on their idea, work GREAT with the community (even allow the mods, and all the updates, they try and keep the mods in mind), and sell their service very inexpensively. And everyone is complaining?
I'm happy for TiVo (especially, because I'm a proud TiVo owner).
So why do we have patents again? I keep forgetting...
So large companies, like Microsoft, don't use other peoples ideas to create an extremely similar product with one more wizzbang and take the original company out of business (ReplayTV).
Now MS can't remove TiVo, cause they will have to pay a royalty.
Patents are to protect the little people. TiVo is (or was) a little person, and they applied for their patents WHEN they were a little person. This is a patent that is valid in my eyes.
For all of you that ask "Why do we have patents", I'd like you to invent something... then watch a big company make a profit on it while you sit and try to feed your family. The whole idea was made with the right things in mind. Sure the people who work in the patent office are a touch off, but the idea behind patents is not.
If we didn't have patents, you'd be praying for them.
Big name companies (with lotsa money to throw at lawyers) are hovering over the net (AOLTW, MS), and Microsoft is getting off so lightly with their monopoly suit.
Will the internet become dominated by big companies with no real way to freely get in, or will the law allow the net to stay free and kick out the big companies? To load the comment, I think that its only a matter of time before the big companies close in on the internet. How long and how do you anticipate the law will keep the wolves at bay??
(1 question per comment, I know, but everyone else does it):-P
Of course, how it looks has no bearing on how useful a language it is (heh, think Perl;), but these people are too ignorant or blinkered to realise this.
Who cares what the syntax for calling a function is? So long as its not 3 pages of code its irrelevant.
I agree, the looks have no bearing on how useful a language is, but what the syntax looks like does have a bearing. Try writing an Object Oriented Program in Object-C, Perl, C++, and Java. Now look at them all.
Which one is more readable?
Which one would be easier to modify?
Which one would -you- want to maintain?
How clean looking code is, is significant (not as significant as other things, such as speed, if there is a noticible difference; but as far as similar bytecode produced is concerned).
I understand that Slashdot likes to send the top 10 highest scored posts. But there were a LOT of Score:5 posts.

Just an suggestion...
Interesting stuff. Wish I had mod points.
Any suggested readings of the "Eastern Fantasy" books that you suggest? I'd like to read one.
I know this won't be a popular post to most slashdotters, but Tolkien was a devout christian (he converted CS Lewis to christianity), and several theologists suggest that his stories parallel many christian stories/tales. Please no religion flames here, its just a point

How many gaping security holes has Mozilla had?

Taco wanted to show off what games he beat on the PS2.
That's what happens when one person owns a site. I wish they had a "personal" topic or something.
You get paid to respond, I do not.
If you talked to me rudely at my job, I'd be professional, for it is my job. You'd never see me jump outta form.
But I'm not getting paid for this, and I'm using my free time.
But if you are truely offended, I'll change it.

A *little* professionalism, Mike. We are, after all, your audience/client/reason for getting paid.
One more thing...
Out of all the complaints on slashdot about slashdot, if you replace those with "complaints about censoring/law/patents", and replace JonKatz bashes with "Microsoft Bashes", what do you have? (If you're really dense, the answer is 'slashdot articles')

What? I like seeing my name in lights, and I only need 1 more article for top in hof
