The author speaks of not moving up in the business world, because of lack of education. My point was to show that he doesn't need to get more formal education if he doesn't want to.
And you don't need to go back to school for knowledge. I've learned quite a bit about astronomy and advanced physics without college training (although college physics courses helped me understand the books I read).
Anywho, I only meant to show how the business world looks upon education. Its not my bleak world, its -the- bleak world...
I'm completely behind you.
Here it is, what school really means:
High school gets you into college based on grades/activities
College gets you that piece of paper every good job needs
The next five years depend on that piece of paper for each job
The rest of your life is based on the experience you have since you left college
And if you get a masters, it'll help you in the first 7 years after school (so going back after 7 years on the job is pretty pointless).
Sure, there are exceptions to each of these (ie - some jobs require a masters, but I think that's bubkis), and, yeah, school means more than that (like learning how to learn, etc...), but thats the "big picture". At least, in the 'big company' aspect. If you want to go into research or teaching, then its a different story.
This is the book that brought me into science fiction. By far, I consider this the best book I've read (over Ender's Game, and Starship Troopers).
The times are a bit off, if you read the unabridged version (it takes place in the 90s as I recall), but the way he deals with the thousands of years that go by is just ingenious!
Your analogy works great if we were refering to the internet, not KaZaa. In your analogy, KaZaa would be the "Drug Store" on the street. They sell legal and illegal drugs.
They claim that they shouldn't be shut down cause they sell "legal" drugs. The illegal drugs they can't control.....
What would a cop do?
Control it, or we'll shut ya down.
Show me a soccor mom that can pick up Linux+StarOffice and use it.
Show me an average person that can learn how to open up attachments with one of your "safe" email programs.
The graph you are now picturing is "User Friendliness" vs. "Security".
The market will show you which one is in higher demand.
Not that I agree with it, just telling you the way it is.
I'd prefer it if they just wouldn't post anything about MS unless its related to Linux. Fact is, bad publicity is still publicity. If they wanted to be mature about MS vs. Linux, they wouldn't post this stuff.
The key word is in the above paragraph is "mature". Its like I always say about elitests and linux. They like being able to put other OSs (in this case) down, that is why you find people bashing Linux newbies instead of helping them out. Cause if everyone used Linux, they wouldn't be "special" and be able to insult the "average man".
Remember, the men behind/. are kids fresh out of school, without any business tact (not that I've shown much, but I'm not being paid to be here...).
A game, in a very general term, is nothing more than an interactive story. Would you watch a TV channel about books? There's only so many reviews you can do, plus updates, and competitions on TV.
Now put that up against the big shows during prime time?
Everyone moaned (both in a good and bad way) about "Enterprises" scantly clad vulcan woman, and her "soft porn" rubdown scene... Imagine what Joss will do with scifi & women!
The only way for Linux to become a gaming platform, is for a company to release a game on linux only, then doing some marketing and make a playable demo on Windows to get players enticed about it. I almost went out and bought a PS2, when I first played the "Oni" demo. What changed my mind? They released it on windows.
The likely-hood of this happening, is slim, seeing that you can make more money on Windows. But it may work if a buncha hobbiests get together (can't be open source, cause someone will just make a windows port)...
Heh... my idea comes down to proprietary software... go figure...
"Grandpa! Grandpa! Tell us about Linux when you were a boy!"
"Well, children, when I just had married your mother, Linux was still FREE, as with all open source! Then Ximian started their pay service, and some hobbiest still stayed with it and paid for it. Then they realized that after two years, they can better spend their money, and Linux Companies slowly died... Linux only stayed alive with people that dedicated their non-working time to it."
Honestly, did you expect them to come back with "yup! There right! Everything we did is crap now!"
Obviously, both sides are biased and think their product is better.
The only way to see which one is better is an independent, non-biased study of the two.
Even then, though, I'm sure one will be better for some applications, and the other for other applications...
Lets look at Revolt and Carmaggedon again. Carmaggedon is a more popular game. Not because of the physics engine, but because it was a more fun game.
With that in mind, its best to decide if physics is important to the game. For stuff like flight sims, yeah, good physics. For stuff like Doom.... not really.
Flame #1: Why is Overrated/Underrated not M2'd? The conspiracy theory here is that since editors moderated with unlimited points, its a way for editors to moderate things they don't like (censorware, anything said badly about them) down without feeling the wrath of M2!
Flame #2: Is the AC privacy on slashdot really safe after upgrading to Slash2.2??
Flame #3: Do you really think that people with a lot of comments need to get out more even though they are indirectly lining your wallet?
Let the flame war begin!
And remember moderators, this is on topic, cause Taco said to "Flame On!" (at least gimmie a point for attempt at humor):-P
Think TombRaider. We all knew what Lara Croft was like, and what she wore. They stated they were going to put a "real" woman in, then they said "Angelina Jolie", then every nerd and his brother wanted to see Mrs. Jolie in skimpy uniforms, hoping a quick "peek" (and they got it with the shower scene).
That movie won high profits on name recognition, alone (don't even get me started at how much they desecrated the great conspiracy theory of the Illuminati....)
ack... after reading this I can see that it can be taken the wrong way.
I was trying to thank you for answering the post, withdrawing my original suggestion, and be funny (yeah, I'm bad at humor).
Hopefully you didn't take it the wrong way.
I really like it when you guys answer questions in comments. Really helps your image to us conspiracy theorist about you guys reading the comments and stuff.
I see your points, and they make sense. Although, some interviewees still, occasionally, skip tough questions, and you forgot about the "trilateral commission" and the "masons";-), but I'll submit to your reasons, and withdraw my suggestion.... that is... unless I'm talking to the "Roblimo b0t" you guys have been testing *loud minor chord* (like at the end of a James Bond movie)......
Some of the other interviewees check slashdot for other questions, but not all. Plus, it'd be nicer for the editors to filter out all the score:5 questions, instead of putting the burden on the interviewee. They are nice enough to put time aside to answer questions, lets not be rude and make them wade through the posts (especially with some of those trolls).

Yes, it is about the vietnam war. In fact, I believe he wrote it while in the vietnam war.
Check Mr.Haldeman's website yourself.

explain the "unjust-ness" of this law to me.
Take this out of the "Slashdot, info/music wants to be free" world and explain to me how this law is unjust.
If you made music, you'd want to get paid for your effort, too...
Free software/music is a good ideal to strive for, but its unpractical in practice. You gotta put food on the table.

No way......
Slashdot crew sees LoTR movie. Really like it...
They're gonna except anything that's slightly related to it for the next 2 days!
Quick! Try and get yourself in the hof!!!
(This is a sad attempt at humor)
Yeah... did Arwen even speak in the first book at all? If you're paying for Liv Tyler, you try to get your moneys worth...
Looks like someone is looking for a little action with Sara Michelle, eh will? ;-)

Egad... it was morning for me (plus my wife is pregnant with our first child)...
:-P
Due to the theory that under the ice of Europa is a giant ocean, NASA's JPL is talking about a mission to crack the ice open and search for biology.
Shameless journal plug? Not really, just an article the was rejected...

My point is, if Lineo came out first and said that there stuff was better, MS would come back saying they blatantly lied....
Its the politics of marketing.

You bring up one extremely important point.
Games need to be fun.
Lets look at Revolt and Carmaggedon again. Carmaggedon is a more popular game. Not because of the physics engine, but because it was a more fun game.
With that in mind, its best to decide if physics is important to the game. For stuff like flight sims, yeah, good physics. For stuff like Doom.... not really.
Its called "Physics for Scientists and Engineers".
Lets face it, the best physics is REAL physics.
If you want your game to have good physics, then slap a good physics engine (based on real formulae) into it!
Taco gave us permission to flame! Lets go!
