Ads are only successful when they are annoying/intrusive. Its the like basic rule of marketing. When everyone does the same thing, it isn't annoying anymore and the marketeers have to switch.

For people browsing the web, its now simple to just ignore the top inch of a webpage, because its an ad. Pop-up's are the new annoyances. Give it a year, and people will be adept at ignorning them, and they'll have to find something more intrusive (maybe putting the add right in the middle of the sentence you are reading?). The point is, marketing evolves with humans. They'll always be annoying. Might as well get used to being annoyed (whatever happened to my right of happiness??).

  17. Open source isn't good for *everything* on Why Open Source Software/Free Software? · · Score: 3

Lets not be zealots like are closed minded friends. Open source is superior for lots of applications, but not necessarily all applications.

A very specific program for a very small client (only) isn't a good open source project. Open source is wonderful if it works with/for a large communitee. Allow me to explain a little better. Its not a good open source project if it only works/only needed for one company and will never be needed again, because it won't reap the benefits of open source (no one will check the code for errors, or want to expand the code or add new features, etc...).

I am for open/free source, but I just don't want everyone to have a narrow view of open source. This probably isn't the best example (I'm sure that several people that reply to this will point it out). I'm just trying to explain that closed source still has its advantages, however few there may be.

It was fantastic. Katz is trying really hard to get "in" with the geek crowd. He expects the geeks to really hate anything made by computers cause it isn't "perfect." Well, I'll be damned cause I thought the movie was perfect.

From the beginning of the movie, where you can see a closeup of the lead actresses... her hair movies perfectly (I believe they traced each hair folicle differently), you can see the pores on her skin, you can see -blemishes- on her skin. Its not like a perfect human, but a -real- human. Even the subtle expressions on the faces showed the perfect amount of emotion. Another impressive part was after a butch marine chick was fighting a battle with the "phantoms", she had hard nipples. Talk about attention to details! ;-)
I was in awe from the beginning to the end. Nothing said "fake" or "plastic" to me, I, actually, had to keep telling myself that this was made by computers, because it was so unbelivably good. Watch for physics mistakes, or fluid dynamic mistakes. Everything worked like it should of. I felt the lip sincing was on, animation was spectacular, and everything fell into place. Katz was just trying to predict everyone's feelings (and failed like normal).

Enter in the lawyer and patent laws. Finally, the kid patents the product, and starts charging everyone... distributers, end users, code borrowers, everyone. Everyone claims monopoly, it goes through the courts, cause taxpayers millions, and very little is done. Please read the beginning of what I wrote for the next part of the story (notice the recursion loop).
