  1. Re:Look at colleges on Linux Win In Schools · · Score: 1

Talking strictly about teaching developers... what's important is learning design, process, algorithms, style, and design (yeah, I said design twice on purpose). Languages change a ton as well as development environments (look at java, I just had to learn IBM's "Visual Age" for my newest contract). The environment can be learned quickly, and all college students coming into the workforce have some kinda learning curve.

Maximum exposure might be a little too much for some, probably interfering with the appropriate learning process (like switching environments for one class)....

    Solution? Linux.

It isn't very surprising to me, other than the need to have a good *NIX network administrator in your local school (seems odd, doesn't it?).

Is this a hypocritical statement Taco?
Lets look at your site. If I post an article anonymously, it gets moderated down 5 times, I get a temporary ban. Now if I was "truely" anonymous, you couldn't figure out who to ban, right? You store IP addresses, so aren't you breaking your own anonymous posting rules? Not much freedom there, eh hypocrit?

A reason why I bring this up, is because of a contract I had a few months ago at a large company. Some dufus kept writing anonymous trolls, and got the IP tempbanned. Since the company had a huge firewall system, the only IP /. got was the firewall, so now I can't post anything. Seems like a bit of a violation of this liberty you talk about.

Now I know that this is taco's server, and isn't true freedom, but for an advocate of freedom, you kinda expect some "practicing what you preach", right?

Lets face it, there are two types of sysadmins:
1.) The type that sits in a locked server room never to be bothered (see BOFH).
2.) The type that wants to help you in a kind manner.

Sure, it is more important to have a knowledgable sysadmin that can knows a ton, and knows some clever little techniques to make everyone's life easier, but its also important to have one that is good with employees and treats everyone well.

One of my former employers had a sysadmin that everyone was afraid to go to because of the tone he'd use. He always shouted and was just generally mean to everyone. He was fired, and the man that replaced him knew just as much, but was always helping people with a smile and would stick with you until the problem was solved. It was a huge difference. People loved the new guy.

I'm digressing, but the point is, a sysadmin job usually requires that you help fellow employees, and that is something to check for in an interview.
