Your definition of minimalism is probably different than a lot of other people's. Keep that in mind. I can't function unless I have at least a compiler, if not a full-blown IDE on the computer I'm using. Same thing goes for Photoshop and me.

You may not have either, and may disregard the need for me or anyone else to have these. Just remember, everyone's different. Because you don't find something useful doesn't mean someone else won't.

VC++ most certainly *does* have a Winforms designer. You have to create a Managed C++ Winforms project in order to take advantage of it, though. Otherwise it just ain't gonna work for you ;-). If you create a native app you can still use the old-school RC file editor, although my take on it is that it's just easier to hack RC files by hand (I've spent the past two weeks doing nothing but hand-editing RC files at work).

And you're right, the PSP is not the first handheld console to cost more than $250, but the other examples you cited (game gear and lynx) died painful deaths at the hands of the marketplace. They're probably not the best examples to cite for prior evidence that the PSP won't doom itself to failure with a big price tag (jesus, I mean I could buy a PS2, GTA: SA, and DDR with a pad for less than the price of a PSP at launch).

Call me when I should care. For the time being, this looks like an overpriced device without a long term commitment from ISVs. I'm not going to spend $300 or $400 on a device that will allow me to watch a CGI movie based around the characters from FF7 and play a card game version (!?!?) of Metal Gear Solid. I'll save my pennies and go pick up a few more games out of the thousands available for the GBA.

I should clarify one point, though. I am incredibly excited that Sony's pushing the state of the art in handheld gaming. However, I refuse to be a guinea pig for their foray into this market. I'd rather wait until this turns out to be either a PlayStation or another PSX.

Interesting, so you're saying that Microsoft presupposed back in 1995/1996 (when Slate started) that they would have a need around, say, 2004 to inject a little self-criticism into the corporate culture. So they start an award-winning online news magazine, spend millions of dollars on it, and kick back and wait 8 years so that Slate can publish an article that criticizes Internet Explorer? You've gotta be kidding.

This is just another damned if you do, damned if you don't circumstance. If Slate shilled for IE, you'd cry foul. As it is, they plug Firefox over IE and you cry foul. What do you want?!?

Furthermore, blogging is more about connecting one-to-one with customers. Didn't they do a terrible job of this in the past? Don't you think they're doing better now?

This seems a bit overkill to me. I feel like this is more of a knee-jerk reaction than a solid business move for some reason. Perhaps the real question is not "how far can we boost our market share with these 35 new phones," but instead should be "what's wrong with our existing phones?"

Realistically, you shouldn't have to add this many different products to your line to snag the coveted clamshell and camera buyers.

I bought a Motorola MPX200 a little under a year ago because I could write software for the damned thing, but before that I had always been a Nokia owner. Clearly, this is not a standard line of reasoning for most buyers.
