What scares me (and surprises me a little, though less than it probably should) is that this guy made it all the way to the county lock-up on the suspicions of one cashier
They interviewed this fellow on local radio last week. He said something to the effect of this:
The police sympathized with him and pretty much knew he was innocent, but they still could not make that judgement call themselves and had to wait for the Secret Service to arrive and verify that they were in fact not counterfiet.
The ones that annoy me the most are applications under Windows that, when installed using an administrator account, "Fix" the permissions on my filesystem for me. I believe the software that came with my old Canon PowerShot (A40?) did this so it could store pictures in the program directory. I mean, ferchrissakes, there's even a bloody "My Pictures" directory that's writeable by the user!
The National Electrical Code requires that wiring in a plenum has a special teflon cladding that won't burn
PVC itself is fairly fire retardant, but it releases Hydrogen Chloride when heat is applied to it. Plenum rated cable burns, but it doesn't release HCl when it does so, and thus is required to be used in environments where air will be circulated.
I wasn't sure about the usage myself, I admit. However Dictionary.com agrees with me, which argues for common usage at the very least.
I understand, just poking a little friendly fun. That's what those of us who aren't very smart do instead of contributing valid points to conversations.:)
I think I remember reading that about half of the revenue that the IRS takes in is used in IRS overhead.
That's the most ridiculous assertion I've ever heard. You mean that half of corporate and personal tax funds the IRS? Hogwash. The IRS's annual budget is roughly $10 Billion.
The IRS does a fairly good job of what they are supposed to do: Collect the taxes that *CONGRESS* levies, and the *PRESIDENT* signs into law. It's not THEIR fault.
Did you know that the IRS is prohibited from offering online filing services themselves for free? That's right, H&R Block and friends lobbied your government to tie the hands of the IRS so that they can't give you good, free service which would mess with their bottom line.
The IRS is no angel, but blaming them for taxes and the complicated nature of tax law is shooting the messenger.
I do network cabling on the side. Business partner does it full time. We are a local contractor that handles service calls for national contractors who service largeish companies like Wal*Mart, Best Buy, Lowes, etc.
You haven't lived until you've seen Best Buy from 30 ft in the air on a scissor lift.:) But seriously, it allows for some nice overnight work where you can just bring the brain down to a nice, simple task that doesn't take too much effort. And it pays pretty well, too.
The problem is that a lot of people visit that site, and it is nearly impossible to weed out the false positives from the person they are seeking.
Suppose that the FBI is investigating a largeish case that involves multiple sites, but they have a reasonable idea it's all the same guy.
Now, request the nmap logs for the time window that nmap was downloaded at each site. Presto, if you're lucky there will be a correlating netblock (or IP) prior to the download for each event.

'm tired of getting my news spun for me. I just want the goddamn facts, separated from the spin.
All Hail C-SPAN. Sadly, one has to expend a considerable more amount of "thought" when watching C-SPAN as opposed to the Major Media, which is why most people don't.
The only problem with C-SPAN is Washington Journal, on which you can truly discover how incredibly stupid the average American is.
No, check that. You can discover how incredibly stupid the ABOVE AVERAGE American is (since most normal Americans would never bother watching C-SPAN).
/me decides to wait for robotic appliances not produced by a company making military gear.
Great idea.
Don't forget to not use GPS. Oh, and don't forget that you can't get on a plane manufactured by Boeing. Or any airplane manufacturer... Or buy a Jeep (or any car, for that matter)... Or buy office furniture of any type (or even shop at Staples, Office Depot, etc.)... Or buy a computer from Dell, IBM, HP...
Because Lord knows we can't support the evil corporations who sell things to willing customers with lots of money. How dare they!
The faceless nature of a corporation does not care who you are, your aspirations unrelated to the workplace and your current situation. They merely want your skills and labor. This is a concept that trickles down the management chain, unfortunately less by force but by those who want to "succeed". Personally, I'll take a heaping helping of poverty over that kind of success. I left when the disgust was far beyond what I could stand.
...
They give me a project, I don't ask what they're doing and I really don't care. Food on the table. I could care less if you get a silly piece of email that sells you viagra, I've got bigger things to worry about.
OK, so you won't do what you need to do to suceed in "Big Business" because of a moral stand, but you WILL work for spammers because you can't afford to take a moral stand.
I'll grant you that it's very late and I'm tired, but this just doesn't make sense to me.
For a frame of reference, I Gigaton of TNT explosive yield is about the size of 20 Tsar Bomba class nuclear explosions.
:)
Oh.
Well, then, thanks for clearing that up.

My laptop screen is 1440x900px. Of those pixels (1296000) in all, they're all healthy.
:)
3888000. Remember subpixels?
It is not cheap ($30 for the duration of a flight)
I paid $18 to make a 3 minute call on a flight two weeks ago.
I think it's quite reasonable, actually. After having just been on a 7-hour flight home (BWI) from London, I would have done this in a heartbeat.

True, but seeing :8443, :8444, :8080, :8081, etc looks a bit un-professional.
Yes, and you also run into those of us who do heavy egress filtering.

It's one of the things I like about strongly typed languages; the ability to utterly restrict input to what is supposed to be inputted
Parse error: syntax error on "inputted", sentence disregarded.
From TFA:
"SBC has demonstrated a commitment to the history of telecommunications," says Sheldon Hochheiser, AT&T's historian until a downsizing last year.
Can a whole story be modded as flamebait? I mean come on now!

Eh... Slashdot's hit count was probably a little low for January so they decided to give it one final "oomph" this evening.
Which reminds me to drive slowly tonight, it's that time of month for the cops also.
Whatever happened to accountability? It's the tax payers money to begin with.
It's called "elections". They were in November. How many congressmen were voted out?

they are paying taxes that subsidize the USPS.
The USPS gets no subsidies from the US Government. Well, not directly anyhow (They do not pay taxes, and have other exemptions as well)
But it is not true that Congress hands out our tax money to the USPS.

1000W for 8 hours is 1 kWh, not 8 kWh.
Then why does my electric bill say that I used 174kWh last month?
Granted though, the parent SHOULD have been talking in terms of amp hours.
