  1. Re:systems wide open on NYT Magazine Says No Network Is Secure · · Score: 1

I've heard this type of approach also advocated in the situation of drugs - legalise everything in state owned pharmacies, the drug barons lose out, the proper information is then available, and the organized crime behind it all collapses.

In the case of opening all systems though, it's a nice pipedream, nothing else. The fact of the matter is that it would not work (the emptying bank account example is enough to show that). I don't see any real conclusion to the current scenario of skR1pt k1dd1e monkeys firing their catapaults... There is no coherent "community", there's always going to be someone releasing the exploits in Point'n'Click form, so there's always going to be the kiddies. Dead end. Please check and try again.

    I think :-)

Word has the "fast save" function, and what this essentially does is append a "diff" style thingy to the main document. (wow, I'm verbose today I don't think!). Anyway, the fast save function is buggy, so it picks up some memory and dumps it in as well. If you disable the fast save function, this problem will go away (at least, it has for me).

    cheers!

I really hope this is a joke. Why do we need satellites? Why do *you* need satellites? Why does anyone need em. And anyway, you yanks have to rent space in the Russian Mir.

Avoiding a flame sesh, every country when given the option whether to have a satellite or not is going to choose to have it, plus, the takeover isn't exactly headlining around the world, leading to the thought that perhaps this story is a little exaggerated.

  9. how much, etc.. on AMD beats Intel in January sales · · Score: 1

Well, performance is a more murky area (try the recent Tom's Hardware reviews of the PIII versus AMD. As for price: Intel PIII 450mhz is about 430 UK Pounds, and and AMD K6-2 3D-Now! 400mhz is about 120 UK pounds. I'm sure these prices equate roughly to the US ones - the major point is that AMD are much much cheaper.

  10. And now, the UK ;) on FCC Decides ISP Calls are Long-Distance · · Score: 1

Something not many people know. In the UK, there are no such things as free local calls. Our main telco, BT, charges approx 4 pence per minute weekdays, 1.5 pence at night, and 1 pence per minute. But on the plus side, the UK has, say, 20 free ISPs (free as in FREE, all you pay is the local calls). There is some benfit in this for the low internet user, but you guys should stop complaining like it is your right. The charges should reflect network usage.

Oh yeah, sorry if this has all been said before, I don't have time to read 100+ comments - I'm paying for it all :)

  15. You are a free person, I hope on PIII - dead end technology? · · Score: 1

It is just like talk shows - you don't have to watch them. You don't have to buy an Intel P3. Is anybody making you? Is anybody rewriting old software so that the new version is locking out non-P3 owners? No, no. Does anybody care? No. Intel can do what they like, and I couldn't care less, but at the end of the day if your so-called "stupid public" want to buy them they will. No probs here, I know what is good for me, and what works for me. Stop complaining, it isn't a compulsory purchase (unlike windoze....).

The whole issue here, I think, is an underlying bitterness that Intel, the proven market leader, is not supplying the minority demands - that is, it isn't catering specifically to the more informed section of computer users. It knows where its income is coming from, and it isn't going to do a U-turn purely because a few people don't like the way it is going.
