  1. herm.. on Guinness Beer Really Sucks · · Score: 1

it runs in my memory that this is not the first time it has happened. Something about a politician running for president or something earlier this year (i think Gore) got upset about antiGore websites and ordered them to be taken down. The owners of the website obliged, and everything went well. (i could be wrong about who it was, but I know something like this happened) this article reminds me of the article from yesterday about typoURLs and such...click here for details. I cannot see how guiness can get upset about this....totally retarded. /me switches to heinekin (only in theory...unfortunately, the law prevents me from consuming alcoholic beverages.)

EIther way you end up fueling the MPAA's grasp for power. Catch 22 I guess...but I think that boycott isn't the answer in this case.

I have heard talk of mars missions for the last 5 years. THey have graced the cover of Time magazine, popular science, popular mechanics, and all sorts of websites. I have heard all sorts of people say that we will be on Mars in just a couple years now. I have yet to see ANY action towards it. Every new news story about mars gives vague promises about life on mars and people going. I don't think it is gonna happen in my lifetime. I am not at all optimistic about it. I would love to be proven wrong, but all these new developments with mars projects have never gone through. There isn't enough money in NASA's budget, and there is no way they will get more after the last couple mishaps. Someone wake me up when they actually go. But for now, I don't care to see a new news story about it every other day.

i understand that. look at it from this perspective...maybe i was posting something to get a first post and I wanted to stay slightly on topic?

not that that is the case...I think it would be very cool to have large town meetings over the internet. (not saying that we should be a democracy) but it would be really neat to directly talk with the president or someone else on issues. It would be neat to have them on IRC or on /. or something like an open forum where any and all points of view could be heard. That is what is so neat about public town meetings. ANyone can go to them and anyone can get their voice heard. That is democracy, in a republic.

there are several things in our country that are done very democratically though. FOr instance, anyone can make their own law..you go down to the courthouse, get the paper, and get the required number of signatures, and submit it. you can also make state laws....and the people are the only people who decide whether an amendmant gets passed or not. I think it is called a referendum. The entire congress could pass an amendmant, but the people decide whether we use it or not. I think that there is still hope for the US, and politics could/should embrace the internet and public forums more than they embrace polls and such.

I was looking over some statistics the other day, in some magazine, and it said that percentage of Americans that new more than one language fluently was extrememely low, in fact, anyone with English as their native language generally doesn't learn another language very well. But, a huge percentage of people that do not speak english as their native languag end up learning it anyway. Maybe this is a clue that people that know english don't need another language, and people that did not know english originally were forced to learn it to live in the real world. I think that is proof in itself that English is definitely the global language.

What is really funny is how Great Britain and the US are seperated by a common language. I had the pleasure of spending a summer with some people from London, and a lot of the time was spent laughing at some of the things that Americans use commonly and yet are horrendous to say in England. For instance, frolicing in the meadows is innapropriate for younger audiences in England.
