I've read the new Nokia post as well now, and the guy not only wrote a lot of crap "haha Nokia you can't get me etc" on the net, but on top of that he's working for Samsung and gives away the Nokia prototypes there. (it's all in the comments here http://thenokiablog.com/2010/07/07/nokia-n8-property-eldar-murtazin/ )

Yes, that's what I'm thinking. They want to shut down the leaks, not to punish the bloggers or whichever tech site end up getting the devices. That's why there's no lawsuit, they don't care going after the tech fans, they know it's a bad move. Eventually they'd rather not make noise about it.

The guy who leaks stuff at Nokia will prolly get fired and stuff however.

Actually in it's blog I believe Nokia wrote "please return our babies" or something like that. No lawsuit etc. They just want the phones back and avoid bad press.

And yes, the phone is an early N8 prototype (from march). The reviewers named it N9 and started a lot of false rumors on it, despite (at least my) posts indicating it was a N8 and early Symbian ^3 on it.

The N8 that will ship soon is slightly different hardware wise, and vastly improved software wise.

Disclaimer: that's sync speed (IP bandwidth is therefore LOWER)

using Linux as "OS" is just a language abuse and I hope you know it and you're just playing on words.

*buntu are different OS variants yes.
Windows Server version XX is a different OS from Windows Server version YX and from Windows 7, even between 7's versions.

    It's like that :)

Gentoo is a GNU/Linux based OS, where each and everyone creates their own OS. Meta-OS and meta-distribution (same linux LFS and other modifiable source based distros). So an OS can be a Linux distribution and a vice-versa. I'm not a language specialist (INALS ?!) but a Linux distribution is just a refinement from a GNU/Linux based OS. (note that by *based* it means it allows possible non-GNU software)

I can understand the confusion, but I don't know what's so shocking about it

Slight conclusion about packages: a package can be or not be part of an OS. It's usually an optional component. If it's distributed with the OS, then it's part of the OS.

It's not like the OS had functionality requiring a horde of daemons, or a core technology change using all your memory and swapping. I would even expect it to actually use less than the previous version, otherwise, they kind of blew it.

People enabling jail break wallpaper report enormous slowdown and battery life loss. That's not even animated its just an image displayed. While it makes sense it is disabled by default, there's something totally wrong there. It sounds like the OS memory requirements doubled and just adding a wallpaper is causing the phone to SWAP stuff out already (constant swapping around would explain the huge battery loss). One could easily say they just did that on purpose to force upgrades.

Anyone with a jail broken 3G cares to run "free" or "top" and check the memory status? It would be interesting to have the same output from the 3GS and 4 too, just to compare if something artificially uses more memory in the 3G.

All phones have the "issue" because it's how radio waves work, however, the iPhone 4 has a real design flaw. It's a shame, since the receiver is actually good otherwise.

My "theory" is not really one, it's just data you can lookup and actually agrees with Anandtech.

Simply, many people think it's really a software issue and 24db is not much, but it's huge, and Anandtech didn't really emphasize that in a clear manner (well, they're not flamebait like me haha)

In my example @ 500m you would probably still see 5 bars on the iPhone while your range has been cut by 8x.

Since they are (24db) the measured db from Adnandtech, it's actually pretty precise and not much a of a theory vs practice thing.

    This is considerable :p

    Every 3db you double the range. 24/3 = lose 8x range. 18/3 = 6x range

So, unless you're right next to the antenna you actually don't get a signal at all, that's why so many are affected!

    Think about it:

When you have the best reception, you are at around -50dbm.

When you are at the worse reception you are at around -110dbm (which is pretty good reception capabilities by the way)

when you remove 24db that's between 1/3 and half of the phone possibilities (which is more than half the range of course, as said higher)

    Still sounds little to you?

Let's make a small example that looks a little more shocking maybe. The base number is random, I do get signal over 15km with some phones and towers, it depends on the area and the tower's power, and the phone sensitivity, but it gives an idea. Inside cities, the range is much less so the impact is bigger.

iPhone "holding it wrong": 500m range
Nexus 1 "holding it wrong": 666m (ops, the beast)
    iPhone "holding it right": 4km

All you need is a dumb laptop running Linux, or even any other OS, with a wifi card.
All you have to do is set the card into raw mode (on Linux, usually setting monitor mode) to be able to inject packet.
Once done, inject packets as fast as you can on the same frequency. The packet contents doesn't matter at all. And done, jammed.

Works well against my Logitech G7, my Spektrum DX7 and a few other 2.4ghz "stupid" devices.

Of course, that's a DoS, and it's dumb, no exploits here. But the point is Bluetooth resists it. Still, I've a feeling such DoS will get more widespread, especially during demos. Jamming everyone's wifi with your own card is harder but possible, especially if you got a powerfull card, say 1W and others are running at 100mW tops.

Just check the signal quality with a laptop as you move until you get close to the source.

but to interfere it must be a very high power signal, so i'm doubting this is the direct problem. something to test this easily, is to change the wifi channel completely, eg if you're channel 1 go to channel 11. that is because no device is using such a wide frequency range (unless its some custom crap running at a few whats just made to kill all wifi channels of course, but that's unlikely too).

finally, the most likely issue is something like that:
there's some electronic system, heating, alarm, whatever, very nearby the router/access point that emit a strong enough signal (it doesnt even need to be on the same frequency range if its close enough) which enables at this time of the day..
