My trusty old Nokia 6600 does that and its gotta be three or four years old by now. Granted its uses an MMC card but I can copy songs directly on to it via a card reader. I can also make a playlist in winamp, for example, and save it to the card. I use FExplorer (a Windows Explorer like program for the phone and its free) to navigate through the songs. Selecting a song or a playlist automatically opens the built-in mp3 player software (which is surprisingly pretty good, although Ogg Player is nice as well) and it starts playing. I think any phone based on the Symbian OS would let you do that, its a very open system and seems to get around a lot of the carrier restrictions that get put on phones. In fact, the 6600 made me love having a cell phone again (although that's mostly because its a quad band gsm and 850mhz has fantastic reception).
The only issue I have with it is the stupid pop port connector. I just want a headphone jack.
I've met with the issues you were talking on my friend's Samsung. I was able to copy songs via a card reader, but the would play only after converting them to some other mp3 format (I'm still not clear on what needed to be changed, I simply found instructions on a Samsung enthusiast site and followed them... it wasn't my phone). Selecting songs from the mp3 player wsa a total disaster; they were listed one after the other with no real regard for folders.
Not only did I get the reference, but I have the limited edition (I think it was only available through Bantha Tracks) Revenge of the Jedi poster hanging in my bedroom.
Classy I know, but its still better than the stock Ikea art in the living room:)
> But I doubt any of the characters on Heroes even have a boackstory. [sic]
You underestimate some people's addiction to that game. I've read some rather elaborate stories during my tenure there.
A lot of people have commented on Cryptic's policing and warnings about using trademarked characters, but interestingly enough I find that other players have more of an effect on what people do with regards to his or her superhero. It is considered particularily bad form to make a copy of a premade hero. Really, if that's what you're after, go play Spiderman 2 on a console.
Say what you will about COH being a glorified Diablo clone (and I won't disagree), but at its heart, its a community. Its about your interactions and experiences with other people, not you and your friend's breakout audition for X-Men 3. I don't want to adventure with Wolverine, he'll never live up to the idea of have of him in my mind anyway. I would, however, love to spend a few hours vanquishing villians alongside someone that cared enough to make a character from his or her imagination. At the end of the day, whether I'm fighting alongside an exact duplicate of Batman or a green-skinned guy with horns who wears a suit (apologies and credit to Joss Whedon), he's still the same 14 year old kid that ends up getting everyone killed.

Although on the upside, if Marvel manages to sue Cryptic out of existence, I may actually go outside.
I realize this is slightly off-topic, but stay with me.
I agree, WOT has fallen considerably in my mind as of late; especially book 10. I've been getting the feeling with the later WOT books that the story is moving sideways, instead of forwards. He's introducing so many new things that the story has come to a standstill. Book 10 can be explained in about a paragraph, really only two things happened. Its getting to the point that I'm not going to rush out and buy book 11 in fancy hardcover when it comes out.
Admittedly though, I feel the same about the Sword of Truth series, but in its case, I haven't lost interest in the story. Its a bit cheesy, but full of violence, torture, sex, magic, epic wars and struggles; in short, a good-ole fashioned fantasty romp. I felt Pillars of Creation was a bit of a unwanted diversion, but Naked Empire has restored my faith in a series I almost feel guilty for loving.
However, that's not why I write. I simply have to bring this next series to everyone's attention. The Malazan Book of the Fallen series and another link when the first one is/.'ed, by Steven Erikson (book 1: Gardens of the Moon). Its intelligent, well-writen, compelling. He builds a world with great characters and I cannot get enough of it. There are four books out now and a fifth due in late spring. I read somewhere that his series has not been picked up by any US publisher. Well its everywhere in Canada, and shipping is cheap.
Song of Ice and Fire is incredible (Btw, check out the free except to book 4)and I give Geore R.R. Martin all my respect, but in my world, Song of Ice and Fire and the Malazan series stand together on the podium.
If you love fantasy, get Gardens of the Moon; its that simple.
Yeah, but didn't he use a femur to rebuild the whole body (shameless paraphrasing of a quick read of someone else's comment to this article; ergo: mostly heresay)?
I mean, on MacGyver, you got to watch as he cut off the eraser ends of a bunch of pencils and then put it all on the skull. We're talking step-by-step instructions here.
I'm calling prior art on your PBS show. I remember an episode of Macgyyver some time ago where he reconstructed a woman's face from a skull with eraser bits and putty.
That's rediculous!

I believe Stephen King, in the Drawing of the Three, coined the term "cool turkey" to describe that.
Considering what silliness the Gunslinger series has become, that's one of the high points in it for me.

One word (ok two, but that doesn't have nearly the cliched valve): Real Alternative.
homepage. I think this is its homepage at least.
V1.08 is the newest.
While you're at it, Quicktime Alternative works great as well.

I'm not kidding, here's the episode synopsis, with pictures: The Secret of Parker House [geocities].
Actually, the amazing part is you are probably one of the few that read the article and noticed.
