  5. mbox.funkified on Improving Unix Mail Storage? · · Score: 2, Interesting

This is all very interesting because I'm slowly writing an IMAP server at the moment..

But here's the setup I'm currently using:

    Inbox:
    /var/mail/$USER
    Subfolders
    /var/mail/$USER-folders/$FOLDER/.messages

    Eg:

    /var/mail/
    |-- root
    |-- fred
    `-- fred-folders
    |-- 1ZB
    | `-- .messages
    |-- Friends
    | `-- .messages
    |-- Games
    | |-- .messages
    | |-- Rune-Beta
    | | `-- .messages
    | `-- Tribes
    | `-- .messages
    `-- Mailing Lists
    |-- .messages
    |-- EFNZ chat
    | `-- .messages
    `-- Hard News
    `-- .messages

I started with uw-imap but I want to store messages and subfolders together. Plain uw-imap doesn't do this and last time I checked, neither does Maildir. So I did a [kludgy, incomplete] mod and produced the above. Works for me :)

    Get the patch: http://home.y3m.net/uw-imap-2001a-nested-folders.p atch
    (diff against imap-2001a)

In the server I'm working on you will be able to implement a relatively simple C++ API to do your own storage. So you can use Maildir, mbox, PostgreSQL, whatever. We'll see.

Anyway - what are some good alternatives for gamespot? I mostly use gamespot to check for news on the latest games for PS2 and to read reviews of older games that I'm looking to buy. What other sites are frequently updated and provide similar depth of content?

  10. Not arrogance on The Future of Ogg Vorbis · · Score: 3, Insightful

Its not arrogance. We all want Ogg to be in wider use and to appear in portable players. From this discussion it is very clear that Ogg Vorbis is still very much in development and needs to be much more stable before anyone starts making software and hardware Ogg players. An incomplete specification and a reference implementation is not sufficient.

I use madplay and I'd like to see a version for Ogg, but at this stage it doesn't seem like Xiph are ready for developers. As they say, wait for 1.0 final and the promised complete documentation.

As far as targetting a specific phone using IP data its a little tricky because (at least in NZ) theyphones sit behind a masquarading gateway so they all carry the same IP for WAP purposes. If you got them to connect to your webserver you couldn't stream too much data before you hit the phones pitiful storage limit (just a few kb).

The masq thing is annoying for tracking web stats because its much harder to determine the number of unique visits when they all come from a single IP.
