"I promise to do my best, to do my duty, to God and my Country", etc.
Ok, interesting, here in Oz that reads "to do my duty, to my god" and I know some people replace god with community or whatever.
I've been told that scouts in the US was based on religion but never knew why.
I was a scout leader in Germany for a while and the scout organisation I belonged to was technically Catholic (DPSG) but they were happy for people of any religion (or of no religion) to join.
The point was simply to consider the possibility that someday AIM-speak may be as acceptable as real English as a written language.
II'm not doing this to try and attack you but unless its taught in school and used at universities AIM speak will not become as acceptable as proper English. What will happen is AIM English changing while proper English stays much the same.
but they could very well be perfecting a new written language at the same time.
But that is not what we want. Part of what schools are all about is arresting the modification of languages. The reason for this being that when a language changes it make communication with the past more difficult.
For example here is some English Dated 1611 AD. Our father which art in heauen,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done in earth as it is in heauen.
Giue us this day our daily bread.
And forgiue us our debts as we forgiue our debters.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliuer us from euill.
Amen.
And another dated 1384 AD. Oure fadir þat art in heuenes halwid be þi name;
þi reume or kyngdom come to be.
Be þi wille don in herþe as it is doun in heuene.
yeue to us today oure eche dayes bred.
And foryeue to us oure dettis þat is oure synnys as we foryeuen to oure dettouris þat is to men þat han synned in us.
And lede us not into temptacion but delyuere us from euyl. You'll notice that things are getting a bit harder to read.
Dated circa 1000 AD. Fæder ure þu þe eart on heofonum si þin nama gehalgod tobecume þin rice gewurþe þin willa on eorÃan swa swa on heofonum urne gedæghwamlican hlaf syle us to dæg and forgyf us ure gyltas swa swa we forgyfaà urum gyltendum and ne gelæd þu us on costnunge ac alys us of yfele soþlice. Most people cant read this at all.
So, do you want a new language? Remember that archiving information is pointless if you're not able to understand it later.
The ability to properly illuminate latin texts is probably dying out as well.
Dying out?! Nonsense its going through a revival! Geeks all over the globe in groups such as the Society for Creative Anachronism are keeping it alive. Take a look at some common work for a better idea (remember that being good at illumination doesn't make you a good webmaster though.)
I'm thinking on routing the internet over short wave, to get a true world wide wireless internet.
But I am just wondering about it. I have no idea if it could be done or not.
Well, yes, it could be done but the problems you would have make this pointless. Interference from sunspots, low bandwidth, expensive equipment (for large scale/high power work). Someone with better knowledge of this sort of thing will need to flesh this out for you (I'm not an expert)
Abuser: WHAT DO YOU WANT? Man: Well, I was told outside that... Abuser: Don't give me that, you snotty-faced heap of parrot droppings! Man: What? Abuser: Shut your festering gob, you tit! Man: Oh, I see, well, that explains it. Abuser: Ah yes, you want room 12A, Just along the corridor. Man: Oh, Thank you very much. Sorry. Abuser: Not at all. Man: Thank You. Abuser: (Under his breath) Stupid git!!
they might have a larger market share than Linux on hte desktops, but it is shrinking
No, that started to turn around about the same time that OS X was released (you were paying attention to all that "based on BSD" stuff, right?). Linux was gaining desktop market share over MacOS but has stopped doing so this last little while.
This may change again (it may well have just been a "blip") but more people seem to be saying "hey its UNIX but with all this nice GUI stuff. And it runs X windows as well!"
Huh? Out of date? In what way? I think you might have been tricked into following the Megahertz Myth. Or maybe you just didn't notice USB, firewire, etc on every mac long before PCs. Most popular technologies were popular on macs before PCs and this doesn't look like it will change any time soon..
Also, if Apple did release OS X for PC I doubt they'd put in any "draconian anti-piracy copy protection crap", these are the people who brought us the "Rip, Burn, Enjoy" ads.
I will not agree that a CD is "more than adequate"
The poster you're picking on was talking about normal people in normal situations.
For most people, a CD is more than adequate. Just walk into any loungeroom and start spouting "frequency, blah, blah. Psyco accoustics, blah, blah." and see just how much people care. CDs are easier to handle and that alone means that for most people (i.e. those who dont feel like being hyper carful or have children about the house) they will sound better. I'm much happier cleaning jam off a CD than off a record.
Maybe in 10 years time we'll know for sure that records can/do sound better than CDs. I'll put money on most people not giving a rats ass.
Dont be so damned elitist in future, it gives geeks a bad name.
Yes! And then we could have a Beowulf cluster of diving computers! Or diving computer webservers! Or a diving computer that can be used to control your TV!
If your going to try to get cheap karma at least get it right.
Monty python quote: It's fun to charter an accountant And sail the wide accountancy, To find, explore the funds offshore And skirt the shoals of bankruptcy!

Even if CDMA is technically a better system its still not the one in use by the majority of the worlds population.
And while you might get better data rates using CDMA but GSM users still get all the cool phones to make use of it. Well ok, not all of the cool phones are GSM but if you've even been to Japan, Europe, Australia, etc you'd have to have seen the equipment everyone was using.
My family in the US think its odd that everyone in my family here (in Oz) has a mobile phone.
I don't think the end of open content is coming, in fact I think that it future is just beginning. Why pay for access to an encyclopaedia when you can get if free? Why pay for books when you can get them for nothing? Why pay for news when you can get it for free? (ok Slashdot isn't the best example)
Ok, so there are problems with both of these sites, the Wikipedia isn't peer reviewed and Project Gutenberg can only use books that are out of copyright (and that varies by country). But, even so, they both remain free.
So, I predict that as large companies try harder to be the only people who can provide information more projects like this will spring up. And when information is provided by only a very few companies/individuals then projects run by large groups of volunteers will become even more important.
We even have tools such as Google news that can gather information from multiple sources at once.
Just think program 3 rats to invade a house. and then just wait for the phone call to get rid of the rats get paid and have the rats move next door.....
Dont bother trying to patent this, the Pied piper has prior art...
Yes but 99.99% of the population are not car dealers.
And suddenly everyone can afford a car!

trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent
Just to digress for a moment but is reverent really in the Scout Law in the USA?
Is this specifically Christian? (you hear stories about how things are done in the US)

Schools will be able to stop this.
Actually, despite all the hype, rocket science isn't really all that tough.
I was going to disagree but then I saw some of the plans.
This reminds me of roadrunner cartoons (ACME Launch System).

Yes, I know, I'm a geek.
I'm thinking on routing the internet over short wave, to get a true world wide wireless internet.

A world wide wireless internet cannot be censor.
Yes it can, just create a lot of interference.
Its not even that hard to do (when you consider that its governments that might want to do so).
You might also like to do a bit of research into what sunspot activity does to short wave radio transmission.
That's been done, it's called Packet Radio.
IIRC, there is support for it in the more recent Linux Kernels (as a module).
I've seen some small Packet Radio setups but it doesn't seem to be as popular as it could be (for reasons a packet radio nut should probably explain)
Right. So you get a blank cube and a set of stickers...
Why are the Do-it-yourself instructions needed?
Hmm, who are these people who open the box and say "What no directions?! How will I tell which yellow sticker goes where?"
Abuser: WHAT DO YOU WANT?
Man: Well, I was told outside that...

It also has practically no presence in business
;-)
That depends on which business your in. Publishing, graphic design, etc all use apples. Whats a big, often used program that isn't available for macs?
It isn't compatable enough (as in, can't run Windows apps without having Windows)
Windows isn't compatable enough (as in, can't run MacOS apps without having MacOS).
OS X plays nice with windows nowdays. Does Windows playnice with OS X? (the OS X-windows networking tools are Samba, btw.)

don't speed bumps slow you down?
Yes but these ones will be "rolled out", making them flat again.
They'll be liberated... Have you not been paying attention?
What in the name of hell is this alien doing?...
I know that casemods are a geeky and all but they dont need to be mixed up with the other things geeks do.
Damn right. Read Down and out in Paris and London by George Orwell. One of the best books I've read in a long time.
If you're in Australia you can get it for free at Project Gutenberg Australia.
Ah how nice it is to live in a land with "short" copyright.
Yes! And then we could have a Beowulf cluster of diving computers! Or diving computer webservers! Or a diving computer that can be used to control your TV!
(sorry but someone was going to say it)
