That might be true (and funny) for a lot of people but here in Australia many people put down Jedi to protest over there being a religion question at all (then again it might just be the Aussie sense of homour).
The nations, government owned, youth radio station JJJ actually encouraged people to do this.
Better yet, stop using paper. Take a look at Australian Banknotes. Bright easy to see colours, different sizes for the blind, UV printing, raised numbering, clear windows, micro printing (you can read parts of our constitution on one note part of "the man from snowy river" on others), etc.
Plus being made out of polymer, they are cleaner than paper/cotton/wool/whatever banknotes.
Hehe ok, so sometimes you dont want to block ads but slashdot was an easy example to pick.
Its odd how different sites looks without ads though, no ads pushing the top of the page down, no ads between the article and the comments, etc. For some sites such as the onion its nice to be rid of them.
Look up the pc98 standard? MS and Intel drafted it. This is what brought us ps/2 and usb ports standard on all pc's. Before that was sound cards and cd-roms on multimedia-1 and multimedia-2 standard pc's by MS, Sony and I think Philips.
They might have drafted it but it wasn't MS that brought USB to all computers. The original poster was right about Apple. Take a look at the original iMacs and iBooks. USB ports all over them, suddenly USB hardware started turning up and the PC world picked it up as well. They didn't come up with it but they made it mainstream.
I've never understood why windows doesn't just put the verbs on the dialog box buttons (as Apple does).
Having the carefuly read an entire dialog box because it looks like every other damned "Yes, No, Cancel" is not nearly as enjoyable as a good old "Save changes, Discard changes, Cancel", or whatever the current options are. (in my opinion anyway)
Why dont the buttons in this dialog have "Terminate, Debug" on them? I know its an alpha but the change wouldn't be that hard and would make the damned thing easier to deal with.
Ok, so owning a rifle and having a NRA card wont do all that much but a revolution could easily happen.
Sure its a bit idealistic but it *could* work. Where does the military get its food from? The citizen's. Where does the army get its equipment from? The citizens. They have surplus supplies but they couldn't hold out forever. How much of the army would really want to be involved in a war against the citizens they exist to protect? Heavy arms against your own country? Its a nasty thought.
It used to be different. 100 or 200 years ago but communication has reached the point where we can, and do, take an interest in what people 1000 km from where we live are doing. We see them on television, they speak the same language, we know who they are. And if half the country revolts taking the military in its bounds with it then they're just as well off as the other half with the "official" military.
Things would need to be bad before a revolution could occur but by then they'd be bad enough that people would and could destroy the army.
Good point but a site like this gives a nice central location where consumers can find music they want. If everyone has their own sites then you'll never be able to locate them (think about it, Google ranks sites based on how many other sites link to them and if your obscure that wont be many). Also a central site can maintain an independent chart system record other users recommendations, etc, in an independent fashion. A personal site or a site belonging to a major label cant really claim the same. Places like amazon.com might be somewhat impartial but they only want to carry items from major labels (things that are obscure wont make them lots of money quickly).
They do take some money. It costs $60 for the first year and $40 for every year after that (as seen here)
Even if they didn't ask for payment they might still take donations or some well meaning people might choose to fund it out of their own pockets (as with the Wikpedia)
How could the Space Quest series not be made into a movie!
Then again are there any directors around who could do this without making a complete pigs ear of it?... Oh well I'll just let my imagination wander off with the idea
*hums theme*Da, da,da , dadadahhhh da, da, daaah dadadah daaaah dadadadadaaaaaah.*hums theme*
You could find some wire, wrap it around your server room doorframe a few times then hook it up to a power supply. Tadah! you've now go an electromagnet that people will need to carry your computer through when they take it away. With any luck they'll turn it on decide the harddrive is blank.
The really clever could add a small solid state boot disk that checked to see if this had happened and made a new, empty, file system on the drive so it didn't look so odd.
I'll second that. I've got an LinkSys AP/Router thats works fine but the Belkin USB adapter I'm using only ever showed a signal strength of 5 ish percent before the firmware was upgraded. It now has a steady 80%.
So, remember to try upgrading the firmware before you fiddle with anything else (back up your settings as part of the upgrade process as well!)
The problem the phone companies have is with people moving their land line phone numbers to a mobile phones.
I don't remember this being an option in Germany (and I was left there only 3 months ago).
On the other hand the fact that you cant take your number to another phone/network in the US does seem to be odd (you can do it here in Australia and we all know how backwards tech is down here...)
I might have miss read that but do you mean to say that helping produce a book/reference without being paid is stupid? What about the joy of knowing that you've helped further other peoples knowledge?
Better tell the Wikipedians that they are suckers before they waste any more of their time.
Freevo does some of this now and should be able to do more in a few months. Plus its got that open source roll your own feel to it.
What more could you want? (don't say "a finished product now", that would be obvious...)
And all those elves will be able to download elf-pr0n a lot faster.
No they'll be able to distribute it a lot faster. (which other group of elves is there that could be producing it)...
If there is one thing George showed me it is that angry people look busy...
Also for everyone who though Dilbert was like life in an office take a look at The Office

The line I like the most is:the Anti-Spammers, many of which hide in Europe
Hide in Europe? What evidence to they have that the anti-spammers are hiding? What would it matter if they hide in the EU and not the US?
Last time I checked it wasn't the anti-spammers that needed to hide....

Good point, I didn't think of that, but why download anything at all when you can just block the ads and still see other images?
Also using CSS means that there wont be any gaps where the ads used to be.
You'll need to do a bit of CSS tomfoolery to get rid of ads from places like Slashdot though (or anyplace that keeps their ads on their own server)
Take a look at thi site. Or read a bit more about it here
Ahh, no more flash, no more ads and it doesn't leave you with little gaps where the images and stuff would have been.

I hate being sent the same e-mail over and over again. I hate the same CDs being posted to me over and over again.
But most of all I hate newspapers and websites with repeated articles... oh wait.
Thank you slashdot. This story really was so interesting the first time that it just had to be posted again.
So have we figured out why people with brown skin act like wild animals?
Because some people treat them as though they are.
Sorry to feed the trolls...
Dass ist voll upgefuckt!!

Now what kind of LoC transfer speeds can you get this way?!

But as luck would have it have it New Zealanders can't even get that right.
Only joking, Queensland is proof that they can get their idiots over here.
*ducks*

He wasn't saying that apple developed it, rather that they pushed it, which is very much true.
Take a look at the original iMacs and iBooks USB ports all over them (well ok only the one USB port on the iBook)
Apple has a history of taking things that were "neat" and turning them into something essential.
