"The presidency is an office of limited power, and I'd actually spend a good deal of time struggling with Congress and the courts to get my solutions implemented..."

Not only a good deal of time, but also a good part of the issues. When a political party/candidate closes in for a majority or even gets elected on a radical platform (if the electorate is really frustrated with how things are going) they will move to the middle/moderate platform eventually. Not only compromise with Congress, but simply common sense would force him to soften up. It is simply not sensible to throw around a whole country in a very short time span. Democracies don't work this way and other (non democratic) goverments had to learn this the hard way. Either they were thrown out of office by a coup or many people died in a famine or civil war errupted or somthing other horrible happened. The only thing that ever worked in this way in some countries was the change of government from authorian to democratic rule in some countries in eastern Europe. As one can see in Russia it doesn't always work this way.

So even if you think he is a little too radical you can still vorte for him if you are 1. fed up with Berry and Kush, 2. think that his ideas make some sense ideoligy wise (taken with a grain of salt) or 3. want some change in the US concerning the two party system.

Apart from that I never get that confusion with the UN that many have. The US is the only remaining superpower on earth and if the US want anything at the UN, like a resolution on Iraq, they get it. The resolution on the non existing WMDs against Iraq went through the security council 15-0 with even Syria voting in favour for heck's sake. So it is not the UN telling anything to the US, but the other way around. If the US uses their diplomatic muscle they can get what they want at the UN any time without any promise of foreign aid to any country or some other shady deal. It is really that simple. But for some reason many people still seem to believe in that fake stereotype of the UN pushing the US around. Please! Get a grip. If anyone is pushing anybody around it would be the other way. But nowdays the Neocons simply want to ignore the UN and have done this. But this doesn't go over well with all the other countries. Diplomacy has some rules. Even though every one knows, that in the end the US will get whatever they want other countries want to be asked first. It is a ritual.

I read some of the responses. But they don't get the point. Your question itself is a little flawed. Why would You choose Windows over Aix over Debian GNU/Hurd? It is not comparing apples and oranges, mind you, since both are posix operating systems, but it depends!

Better would be when to choose one over the other as why to choose.

When is much easier to answer (or not). It depends first of all on the hardware. Solaris was written for Sparc, Linux for IA32. So when you want cheap hardware you go with Linux, when you need an all inclusive hardware support contract for some very demanding task and money is not the most immediate concern Solaris on Sparc would be a much better choice then Linux. Linux is competing with *BSD and Solaris is competing with AIX and HP-UX and the likes. So it is also a little bit likecomparing apples and oranges.

Other than the cost and the time and support questions there is also the questions of what you need to do. If your bank needs a computer system to handle its money transfers it probabely would choose Solaris/Sparc, whereas for something that goes on the web Linux on IA32 and Apache might be a good idea. So application and use is also a point.

I hope this answers the question a little bit better then other posters before me.

At least I am better then the guys going Linux sucks, it is not stable or Solaris sucks, it is not free...

Btw. Red Hat now offers similar 24/7 support contracts then those by Sun for Solaris/Sparc, but they are cheaper, since IA32 hardware is much, much cheaper.

Of course You realise that George Lucas makes truckloads of money on THX licsensing? It is NOT an open standard! Any investment they made on THX was certainly not for an greater good and repaid itself over and over again. I would have loved to be one of the investors on this one.
But it does make it harder for independent little movie theaters to compete, since they find it hard to come up with the money for the system AND those stiff liscence fees.
I can make them more dependent on the large studios like MGM, since they have to get back the investment they put into the system and will prefer to show THX movies from now on. Any halfway independent movie like, for example Star Was Episode 4 would never include THX for the simple reasons that it would be a) too expensive and b) many theators, especially those showing independent stuff don't have THX.

The effects shown above are much, much greater with digital projectors. The investment (at least at the moment and for some time to come) is much greater than with THX. Also the large studios will have tighter control on that distribution channel. A bit like the big networks (when was the last time you saw an independent film on the networks?). So more "Legally Blonde" and less movies like the first "Star Wars" coming to a theater near you.

George Lucas makes shitloads of money on both "inventions" (rip offs with his licsensing sticker attached to it) while raising the bar tremediously for people like him 25 years ago.

Also a pattern of greed has already been established with Episode 1 first coming out on VHS and then, when every true fan that couldn't hold out, because they wanted to see the movie at least a couple times more had purchased it brought out the DVD of the same shit (I will quickly don the asbestos suit and then admit that Episode 1 sucked IMHO). Now do you really need further proof for greed at its lowest?

The 'Club of Rome', an organization of scientists that tries to evaluate global problems and come up with possible solutions came to the conclusion that due to the green house effect we will have to build many nuclear power plants fast, because at the moment there is no viable alternative. Since nuclear waste presents a big problem their report also states that we need to develope fusion reactors as well, but since that will take a long time we first have to get going on the short term solution to save our asses.

Apart from that I still have to caution all that blunt optimism. Some newer studies hinted, that low radiation over extended periods of time are a lot more dangerous to the human body than high radiation over very short periods concerning cancer. And there is a steady pollution coming from nuclear power plants. So we still need to study and evaluate the causes of cancer and the effects of radiation.

The common fear and paranoia about readiation is well founded IMHO. You can't smell it, can't see it or feel it, but it still steadily erodes your health. That is something I, personally find frightening. But writing to an audience that spent a major part of their youth 30 cm away from a CRT I am probabely alone with that feeling.

  22. GPL LGPL and Databases on Is MySQL Planning a Change of Tune? · · Score: 2, Informative

First of all MySQL used to be the only choice for OSS developers when it comes to stable database software that could be used in a productive environment with a lot of demand. PostgreSQL used to be more damanding on hardware and hardware (as noone should forget) used to be much slower. Now we have 2 and 3 Ghz for 200 bucks. PostgreSQL also became more stable, robust and less demanding. There are also many new choices out there: MaxDB (formerly known as SAP-DB e.g. Adabas D) is now under the GPL and Interbase became OSS under the name Firebird to name just 2 very famous examples.

So if anyone has problems with the license for any reason they can choose among many other: BSD for PostgreSQL, GPL for MaxDB and the InterBase Public License for Firebird for the three mentioned examples.

Other than that all code released under the GPL can be used under the terms of the GPL and anyone can do whatever they feel like with it. That means that if I choose to take the current MySQL to write my world domination program (the source code to that would certainly remain secret) with it I can do it now or whenever I choose to do that.

Only when I want to distribute said program (what a dumb idea!) I have to make the source code available to anyone who I distribute this program to and I also have to inform that person that they can do anything they want with that code as long as they adhere to the GPL.

The LGPL is a different beast. If I link my program to LGPL libs I can withhold the source even if I choose to distribute my program. If I link to GPL libs I have to give out the source with the program. Only if I use code LGPL itself I need to put the result under the LGPL. But agains only if I distribute it. Many companies used to develope software only for in house purposes. Those could and still can use GPL and LGPL programs and source as much as they like and don't have to give anything back to the community.

There is absolutely no problem here, because anyone can still use existing code with the licenses they were distributed under, e.g. older or the current version of the MySQL client and even fork and patch those with appropriate security patches if necessary (the patches have to be the old license though). So if anyone created a program using the old MySQL then they don't have a problem. If they develope something new then they can choose among many OSS DB (s.a.) and their respective licenses.

So nothing to see here, move along please.
