  3. Obvious fraud on EBay Letting Fraud Slide? · · Score: 1

I dunno, but I believe there is a lot of fraud going on on ebay. Most of it seems to be very obvious, though.

I want to get one of those SonyEricsson P800 mobile phones that even Slashdot carried a story about. They won't come out for another month or so I now learned, but were planned for Q3.

I did an ebay search for p800 before I learned of the delay. What I found were tons of shams. I do now that p800 were released in a test program and even so those testers would be obliged not to sell them some could wind up on ebay.

But all the sellers that claimed to sell actual phones (the pictures were all taken from the webpages, one was taken at an exhibition and could also be out of the web) had no prior ratings. One of them even made their ratings private (I didn't know this was possible). This all for an item that will have a target price of US $800 and should fetch more than that before the official release if it was for real. Some dumb people even seemed to have placed a bid on some of the phones. If You give that much money away, why not throw it in a large foxhole?

And that was just about the phones. Most hits for the p800 were obscure texts that should advise You to get free stuff. I won't comment on this.

If You want to know about fraud at ebay, just do a search on p800.

I hve argued with girls a lot about this. In the end some even admitted that some of their best friends had that go-for-the-that-treats-me-worst-problem or still have. I have a friend who got dumped for a drug dealer that left her with a kid. He (the dealer that is) just knocked on her door. The kid already called my friend daddy. I don't want any girl to make that experience! I was trying to adress that twisted wiered whatever problem in an little humerous way. Don't take everything serious. OK I am not a geek. But I know some geeks and I get really impressed by most of them, because of their brains. Don't mail me I am male!!! Strangely the first person I met in person apart from LUGs that could make a decent Linux install was a girl! Her looks are really sweet. She studied computer science, can code, writes Tex... Even tries her own port of Linux to some wiered DEC platform. As I stated I am not a geek and therefore can't even code decently. Btw, she already has a nice boyfriend, now chance! Now to your problem. Most male geeks I know don't have girlfriends. This applys also to some other guys I know (I currently don't have a girlfriend either). The problem is not limited to geeks and not all geeks have that problem. The real question should be how to get singles together. Also you really shouldn't focus on getting laid. Sex in a realtionship involving love and trust can be so much better!! So focus on getting a girl. Now if you are a nice person any girl that really gets to know you and has had some experience with a*holes should be a target. Unfortunatly not all girls have that experience. Some go for nice guys naturally, but not all. If you are not a nice guy (go ask someone to be honest, is you are nice. best would be someone who doesn't like you. Yourself or your friends are not a reliable source on that, because they tend to focus too much on your qualities). If you are not a nice guy work on yourself or try to make the girl you are with pregnant ASAP. This highers your chance that she stays with you even so you are an a*hole. Back to the nice guy: Now you know you are smart (geek) and a nice guy. Go for any tips how to meet girls. On the Internet the ratio is very bad. Try focussing on places where you have better chances. Get yourself some nice clothes (again ask somebody else what they think you should wear best would be a girl in the same social cirlces / age group that you want your girlfriend to be) Shower! Shave! Hairdresser! (if you want your girfriend to do that you should do that, too. Fair is fair) Hardest part is going up to girls and talk to them. Don't focus on anything other than to get to know girls for the sake of it. As you talk to them you learn more about them and maybe someday you girl is among them and you already have build enough confidence to not embarres yourself. Sounds like a lot of work? Consider the benefit. Someday a lifelong partner. No worries about getting someone any more and you can finally focus on geek things again. Try not to forget your girlfriend though.

Wasn't the purpose of that hardware speed overkill to make it easier for programmers. They didn't like PS2 for that reason and GeForce3 has the same thing. Why don't they make a chip which makes it easier to programm faster and more realistic games. As far as I have heard the hardware is way ahead the software and that is part of the current crises on the market. There is no software (aka good voice recognition) that boosts productivity and needs faster processors. Therefore one could classify nVidias decision to go that way as dangerous for the world economy (they almos alone now next to ati).

  12. The ban on Encryption on German EU Delegate Sues 'Unknown' Over Echelon · · Score: 1

You still didn't get it, did you? Governments of western nations nowdays tend to protect their economics first, since economical power is very important. The CIA has a long history of working for the domestic industry. Everywhere where American interests are at stake (business interests becoming more and more important) a government agency steps in. The only possible explanation for the ban that used to be on encryption products is, that it would be harder for US government agencys to decrypt those messages. They even said it. The US software industry is dominating the market, so the government just weighted the lost market share of their software industry through not incorparating standard strong encryption in, let's say, their email programs such as MS Outlook against the loss of their ability to filter an even larger amount (because of the plain text) of emails for usefull information mostly to supply to the domestic industry. Since nowdays a lot of (European and Asian) companys secure their emails anyways or do not send any confidential over the Internet the US government could lift the ban... They still have Echolon and other projects, set up to spy against military foes, but used against any foe. Business is business! (Ever heard of those cool subs, that sit right next to underwater cables to listen and filter through all the telefon calls going through?) Ever wondered why the NSA needs so strong computers? 16. the right timing on Encryption Market Opening Up · · Score: 1

I am amazed that you still didnt get it. I think it is fairly simple: The NSA is doing extensive espionage through projects like echolon. This is uses up a lot of computing power, since you have spoken words (from tapping any telephone they can get their hands on through satelite communication, underwater cables -> submarines, or old cold war facilities all over Europe). The data is used in American interest (security and, of course economical). The US government agencies have a long history of working in the interest of American businesses (think Guatemala, American Fruit and the CIA).
So tapping and screening email with very advanced and sophisticated software taking certain priorities for certain adresses is a thing that is very easy and done, of course, by the NSA in American interest (again both security and economical).
Now most of the standard email software (think MS, think Outlook, think Eudora, Netware...) comes from the US. Without an export ban encryption would have been a standard feature included in any mail programm by now. This would pose a very big problem for that kind of extensive searching. Since the whole American Industry benefits from encryption not being a standard tool, the feds just made a simple equation: Hurt the software industry a little and let the domestic encryption industry fall behind, but let the rest of the industry benefit from extensive industrial espionage (which is very important in High Tech, but also in all other sectors). As long as there are at least some people out there not encrypting what they think is not really valuable the equation goes against lifting any ban. I guess by now there are enough foreign agencies doing the same thing and therefore balancing the (Israel for example) equation and even though encrytion hasent gone mouseclick yet enough people use it for anything that might be considered to be of any value that making encrytion software standard is the right choice. I dont think this sounds paranoid, but feel free to make up your own mind about it. Since most of you are working for the High Tech industry that all might not be relevant any more since competitors from outside the US probabely use very strong encryption or dont send anything over the Internet any more.

As far as I know (applys probably better to the time before PS2) the most money the console game industry is making is coming from the games. I even heard discussions about giving consoles away for free, since they would earn enough from the games. So it would be highly illogical to produce a console on which you could play games that other companys get money from (not all the games are designed by the console companys themselves, but rather from the game industry where the money the customer is paying gets divided between the console company, which gets a large share and the game producing company).

  18. Why? on Gun Sales Halted By FBI Computer Glitch · · Score: 1

I am from Europe. Maybe that is the reason why I don't really understand the American obsession with guns. I guess there is something wrong with all Europeans since we are all stupid liberals or sth. like that. AFAIK guns are tools to shot. To aim and wound/kill someone. You can't catch a bullet with it or protect yourself from any other harm (shotgun, shrapnel from a granade...). So a gun can't protect you against anything. (Please argue with me if you think otherwise). The only thing it does is to pose a threat to anybody around (kids who play with it if it isn't properly secured, yourself while cleaning or just carrying it around, your dog, you spouse...). My grandfather is a hunter and my dad has a hunting licsense, but hunts very seldom and doesn't own a gun. Both of them, especially my grandfather always told me how dangerous guns are, since (Murphy) everything can go wrong, but with a gun it can be deadly, or at least very harmful if it happens. It can be especially dangerous for everybody if a conflict arises and a gun is involved, no matter if it is yours or somebody elses. A conflict could, for example a criminal who wants to rob you in your house, or anywhere else. The existence of the gun, with the threat of a potential use quickly raises the conflict from a pure materialistc level (who gets the money, jewlery?) very quickly to a deadly level. If the other person happens to have a gun (or any other deadly weapon for that matter) the whole scenario turns worse: Both threaten each others lives. If the other person only has a gun, fine. He is in control, can take what he wants and does not need to raise the conflict to a deadly level. So believe me: A gun is dangerous as soon as somebody hadles it. For protection against criminals we have the police. They carry weapons and are paid to do so. So they get shot at. Me? Forget it! I don't want to get shot! As for protection against the government: I really don't want to argue on that one: GET REAL!!!

At least at Slashdot I thought I would have found some decent folks that believe in peace and at least include in some posts some awarenes about new technology first used for war (see nuclear bombs) or warfare becoming a computer game.
