Alot of us had fun as kids playing with Mario Paint. Are there any open source 2D animation programs out there? A quick search yielded only lame shareware programs that didn't really cut it, and were intended to be used on making animated GIFs.
I am excited to see a console with manufacturers like AMD and nVidia behind it, if they can get enough developers behind it.
Yes, Microsoft is evil, but so is Sony, and the Playstation has been one of the best consoles ever. If you think a 700Mhz processor will become outdated soon, look at the Playstation's paltry 35Mhz processor.
There is no way you can look at Final Fantasy 8, Vagrant Story, Gran Turismo, or Metal Gear Solid, and tell me that the console's hardware is what sells it or not. I bought one of these 35Mhz Playstations when I was running 450mhz in my computer at home, to play the games.
On a fixed console, there is no comparison. Talented developers can do incredible things when they don't have to worry about supporting every single popular video card and API out there. Yes, PCs will march forward into the gigahertz, but I think the X-box will still deliver some pretty impressive exclusive titles despite that.
What I have found, is that while many women may find this career enjoyable and rewarding, not so many (I know none) have the passion for it that my friends and I do. How many girls do you see soldering together electronics projects, or writing code for fun, or visiting five news sites as soon as they get home from their tech job, to learn about the same technology that they just got done working 8 hours for? How many girls back in high school did you seen lugging their case to a LAN party?
When I was at orientation for my engineering school, and a lecturer asked the group "Why do you want to be a electrical/computer engineer?" The answers were "I read a great article in Time about how they start out at $45,000 a year!" or "I heard in Forbes magazine that there is a huge computer job shortage and they are willing to pay pay pay!!"
And that's fine, these people don't really care, they just want a career. There are exceptions to this rule, and the vast majority are the exceptions are guys. How many girls out there cut their teeth on Radio Shack's electronic components, redboxing, and plenty of XCOM:Ufo Defense?
Instead of supporting Blizzard and their franchise, you could check out some great opensource projects that Blizzard basically repackaged, made real-time, added fancier graphics, and sold to Joe Consumer.
Rogue is the grandaddy of everything. Including Diablo. See where it all began.
Angband is my favorite Rogue-like. It has incredible depth, hundreds of monsters, and hundreds of magical items. #angband on Othernet usually has at least one developer in it.
There are also a number of Angband variants such as Zangband and Pernband. Zangband even includes a multitude of quests, for those who like a little story-line to their dungeon crawls. These can all be found at the Angband link above. Graphical Tcl versions of Angband also exist, for the graphics-needy.
Others include Nethack (a light-hearted, often humorous Rogue-like), ADOM, and Moria
So, instead of marching to your local EB, why not download one of these (I heartily recommend Angband) free games and save the 40$ that Diablo 2 would cost you? You could even contribute to the project, play with the source, or add your own monsters, items, and spells. Have fun!

If they need a little coaxing, and don't want to drop Windows, a guy has ported The Gimp to that platform.
GIMP for Win32
I use it and find it to be stable, and at least as rich in features as PSP, if not Photoshop.
