    one suggestion about the stringing of the lines... you might want to contract that out to a local company. that way, the massive investment in infrastructure stays in the local economy. that's *if* there is a likely local canidate for that sort of project available.

    GPL does not give any user the right to give the isos away.
    sure it does. from the GPL:

    why aren't i blaming *them* for coming up with an untenable business model based on trying to take away some of the freedoms that the GPL gives me?

    Red Hat, a company supporting lots of developing in the GNU/Linux community, releases their newest version as a privileged one-week-early download for their customers through their network.
    so, in other words, they are basing part of their profit model on expecting users not to exercise the freedoms that the GPL gives them, even though without the GPL, Redhat wouldn't have a product in the first place? forgive me if i don't give a crap.

    a little etymology:

    the term 'metaphysics' comes from aristotle, who placed all his books on a shelf in a particular order. those that were about what we call 'metaphysics' were next to his books on physics. hence, 'metaphysics' originally meant 'next to physics.'

    ...while I don't agree with this idea, can someone come up with a way for uni's to pay the bandwith bill, not raise tuitions, not charge for "extra" bandwith, and not hinder students who have legitimate reasons for that kind of bandwith at all? If so, then you can complain about this policy. After all, if the university can't pay it's bandwith bills, it can't award grants for research.
    well, one thing they could do if they're going to impose this regime on their gateway is install a decent caching http proxy, to help mitigate the fees for some people who are downloading the same stuff as everyone else.

    it won't solve the problem, but it might help.

    The sound coming out of the speakers is pretty good quality. Not as good as in the 17" model, neither as good as the one found in most Compaq laptops, but still, not bad at all. Fully acceptable playing my favorite Eurodance radio station... ;-)

    i once witnessed a car audio contest where the winner of the raw output contest didn't use music. instead, he had a button on his dash that sent a single pulse to all his speakers simultaneously. dunno if it was a square wave or what... anyway, it pegged all the decibel meters.
