    so what MS is good at office. Office 2013 easily beats competitors such as LibreOffice, and alternatives on Mac for many usage scenarios. what's with the "MS is better" = "doesn't make me happy" So they sometimes make good software. oops did i say that aloud on slashdot??? *waits for crucifiction* when will the apple/linux/google/ms world learn to live together in peace & harmony...like they do in my house.

    You obviously have not made any effort to look at TypeScript. You are not bound to TypeScript. You get the output in JavaScript. Take the JavaScript and forget the TypeScript. There is ZERO lock-in.

    1) references 2) your previous work 3) communication of your knowledge demonstrated in technical interview 4) most certs are not expensive if you already know the topic. just do the exams and avoid the courses. if you're expert you may not even need to study for them.

    Closed source doesn't prevent from disassembling windows functions or testing through a kernel debugger. Open source = easier to see find backdoors, easier to find security vulnerabilities. It's also easier to take legitimate code from the OS modify it maliciously and distribute the binary. In other words being open can work for you and against you. The good guys have an edge, but it's wiped out by edge bad guys get. Closed source it's harder to find backdoors and it's also harder to find security vulnerabilities.

    My approach is to dump the chair, built a mini-table out of wood (or you can buy something fancy...) which i put on my desk at work, and run laptop & monitors etc off that. Work the whole stay standing, still able to do computer research & development with some increased physical activity. Love it. The other option is get a job that needs you to visit many computers across a very large space i.e. a large university, but not too large a space that you're always driving.

    The EU is failing to come up with it's own exciting, innovating tech products that go mainstream, so they love to just keep fining american companies. the browser ballot was a stupid idea, and doesn't do anything to help non-tech users, only makes setup more confusing. maybe one day europe will start producing great products again, and people don't have to be forced 'to choose' they'll just want to choose it...

    I've been using the Windows 8 mail client instead of outlook on my MacBook Air with my exchange email for a few weeks and mostly like it. It reads mail/sends mail, is bloody fast, never hangs or slows down. That being said 1) it's a beta product 2) it does have the option to provide feedback to Microsoft within the app It is short on some features, I await final release to pass final judgement.

    yeah, because vendors like DELL tried to sell linux desktops and that was a HUGE SUCCESS. And HP tried to create their own OS. That was just about as successful as the linux desktop.

    be in the top percentile, then no problem. duh. you just have to over-achieve compared to the rest of your team. i guess for some people that's motivating, for other's it is not. but it seems to be pretty common across large enterprises.

    I don't know how serious this threat is about "curtailing the anonymous Tweets which have been useful for protest in repressive regimes" But what twitter does need to block is the high amount of spam that is all so predictable...I can't believe twitter has not yet fixed it as the algorithm seems to be so simple to get rid of vast majority of it: 1) A person I do not follow "mentions me" i.e. Free iPhone here @chentiangemalc 2) This person has 0 followers, and usually also does not follow anyone else 3) They tweet this same message to 100s of people If a person wants to make "anonymous Tweets" or spam messages to themselves without mentions, then no problem for me. I can't believe though twitter has yet failed to block this kind of spam message.

    1) Kids will figure out ways to get around software 2) Simple solution: only allow computer/tablet/laptop use in living room or other public area of house. We have our computer / wi-fi access point only accessible from this room = no need for software, and the family can stay together even when surfing net 3) Better than software is to teach your kids what is right and wrong

    iPad has become increasingly popular across large enterprise without domain join or group policy. Windows RT will support exchange email,/calendar.....most critical feature for enterprise tablets,plus it will include Office, iPad still lacks good office software (at least for complex documents). Policy management, like ipad,can be controlled via Exchange ActiveSync policies. At the end of the day full group policy & domain join would be overkill for these devices.

    um windows is exactly designed in mind to replace explorer, it is documented by MS if it's something you want to do; most commonly used in kiosk or novell environments from what i've seen. explorer is not only the file manager; it provides desktop, start menu, and system notification area.

    I've had the same with public domain Christmas carols I.e. Silent Night from some wacky company. It seems like a new business model, first patent trolling...but lawyers get expensive, falsely report copyright infringements on YouTube automatic money, and almost no risk.

    Because unlike Android iPhone apps cannot access your personal info unless you give to them. Except location which you do need to explicitly allow per app and can disable later.
