"So are do you argue that there should not be natural rights (I realize your post wasn't normative) since there are no sky fairies?"
The question is not whether they should exist, but whether they do exist. He said, rights are social constructs (even human rights) so there are no inherent/natural/objective rights. And if human rights are social constructs, then they can differ from culture to culture. (Ok, there was a UN decision about that, but that only applies to those participating.)
In Europe at the beginning of 20th century there were Christian-socialist parties, so the association is not that rigid. Actually in my country (Hungary), the ruling party (FIDESZ) has good relations with churches and in many respect a leftist agenda. (They were against the abolition of public health care and free higher education.) The Christians I know are usually more socially sensitive and FIDESZ voters, while the socialists combine free market ideology with hipster culture and try hard to be more cooler than thou.
As I see you cite Korean examples. My post-communist country is Hungary. I'm not sure I would categorize the war crimes in Korea as McCarthysm.
To be honest, when making the first comment I only had a superficial knowledge of what McCarthysm entailed (I thought it was just mostly anti-communist propaganda, and stricter security clearances). I agree that breaching due process, and baseless accusations and blacklists are unacceptable.
Well, the Red Scare had its basis. The Soviets actually believed they can create a fully communist world (that's what marxism says; world-revolution), they only settled for less only for practical reason. I can fully understand why American leaders wanted to make soviet propaganda/viewpoint unpopular.
"Don't know about "laws of ethics" but there are innate Natural Rights, which all human beings share simply because they are human. Example: The right (or instinct if you prefer) to own one's self, rather than be owned as a slave."
""have you sir ever associated with any member of the communist party." lol old joe! yes, it makes sense now. bringing back 1950s style fear and hysteria. learning from the best, i guess. thanks, right wing assholes"
I, as a citizen of a post-communits country, think that most of McCarthy's actions were actually needed to counter communism.
Well, in Europe that are complaining about immigration are the ones which have decent fertility rates. (e.g. Britain, France, Germany; Italy is exception) While in Eastern-Europe the fertility is around 1.3 and people are pretty neutral towards immigration, but nobody wants to come anyway, because of lower wages.
I guess people around here have heard about the Humble Indie bundle. One game of that package was uploaded to the Apple store. If they've put DRM on it, the pirates wouldn't have been able to sell that.
I never heard before a bacteria which can cause genetic change, however all viruses do that. Bacteria usually produce toxins. And we know that some toxins can cause cancer too. (Not a doctor.)
I'm from Hungary, ex Soviet satellite state (Hungary), and at the university I had a professor (head of CS department) who trained to be a math-physics teacher, but got involved in math research (statistics) so he became a full-time mathematician. This is how things work here: if, you want to be a highschool teacher you need almost science degree. In the old, undiveded 5 year degree program scientist and teachers got the same subjects in the first 3 years, then teachers get some additional pedagogy, psychology lessons. In elementary school, you need a teaching degree, plus some coursework in the subjects you'll teach, but it's less advanced, and these teachers were trained in 3.5 year programmes. In the last 4 years we switched to bsc/msc programmes, but I don't know how that does apply to teachers.
"There is every reason to believe that competition, war, and resources are universal." And altruism too. Otherwise it's hard to build a society. Have you heard of the optimality of tit-for-tat?
Many of the Arab states that had their maps drawn by white westerners weren't states (as we use the term) until those maps were drawn.
It is a testament to the durability of bureaucracies that even though those "nations" have been self-governing for some time, they haven't altered their borders to reflect the social boundaries that exist. Sudan is only recently coming to the point where it can consider changing its borders, and that only through armed violence.
You know what countries had their map drawn by "westerners", let's see: Yugoslavia. And it actually led to genocide just like in Sudan. Maybe it wasn't such a good idea to make rendom borders after all.
You seem to fear buffer overflow. Then write it in Java. /ducks

So you're in favour of giving them fish, but not teaching them how to fish.
Someone from India.

My dog disagrees with you.
"The real truth is the Bolshevik revolution is what made schools in the US great in the 1950s and 1960s for engineering."
I think it also created a more egalitarian society in the US as well. Because the US had to compete for average standard of living as well.
I've seen a lot of mathematician in the financial sector. Applied math and engineering R&D go hand in hand as well.

"So you want to bank the future of humanity on some educated guesses about alien life?"
No, I want to bank on the future of humanity on proven mathematical theorems. Nothing to do with earthling biology.

Then send pulses with length ratios of prime numbers. These guys were however trying to encode a message, which is completely different.
This bacteria can cause genetic changes in the stomach lining which lead to stomach cancer.
This sounds more like virus.

Here you are!
The truth is if the Israelis were less civil they would have driven the Palestinians out by force a long time ago.
You mean like how the nazis did it with the Jews?
Did he use a "rubberhose" during the act?
Oh my God, I already speak German! (not an ethnic German)
Yeah, being racist is much better.
