Maybe when he/she moderates they browse at 3, as instructed in the mod guidelines? (This is what I do, but I also browse at 3 normally... I probably miss some interesting stuff but I also manage to retain some faith in humanity as well but avoiding the dregs, so I figure it balances out)
Genuinely not trolling, but don't you find the XCode editor a bit pants? Kate/Kdevelop seem so much nicer to me (though this is what I started with, and I'm only just learning XCode now).
I was curious about this, and I decided to try to find out how well an American's life expectancy compared with the rest of the world.
I've not done a detailed study, but according to the WHO most european countries (which tend to have 'socialized healthcare' beat the US.
Of course there may be many reasons for this, such as genetic predisposition etc, and perhaps in the US the best healthcare is better (i.e. the rich live very long, with the statistics dragged down by the poor)... but still, I'd be a little bit careful about assuming that 'socialized' countries do worse: from the little research I've done this is not true. F'r instance, it actually looks to me as if you'd be better in Canada if you want to live longer!;-)
I also like their attitude to travel visas - basically they demand the same requirements from you that your country would have for a visiting Brazilian.
So as a Brit, visiting Brazil is pretty easy (no visa required in fact)... for someone USA... less so.
I'm writing this on an iBook right now and I have to say the only thing I don't like about it is the screen!
But then I use an Apple Cinema Display at work...
basically what I'm saying is if you like the iBook screen (and maybe it's okay and I'm just spoilt) you're going to LOVE the desktop stuff you can get! (The apple cinema displays are extremely expensive, but cheaper stuff is also way better than the ibook screen)
True, some parts/characters could have been left out of the final production but it/they didn't take so much away from the movies that it rendered the movies horrible.
Erm. Yes they did.;-)
Honestly though, I like esp 4,5 and 6 (roughly in that order of appreciation as well) but I struggle to find anything good to say about 1&2. The acting, script, editing and special effects were all dire... what did I miss? I'd honestly have left the cinema in episode 2, except that I was in the middle of a row. And I'm not even that fussy - I like Daredevil!;-)
I thought UID's were given strictly in the order you signed up? Could you actually buy low UIDs... if so, that is deeply weird than anyone would care enough to do it!
as an imaginary computer consultant I charge 5% less than the going rate in the US, then employ an Indian worker at 100% of the rate in India... which is 50% of the rate in the US.
My clients are none the wiser. I pocket the difference. The GP wasn't suggesting that he got paid Indian rates and got rich that way...
I'm all for downloadable movies, or heck, extended trailers or synopses, but people don't buy iPods so they can go buy music from the iTMS -- they use the iTMS because they already have iPods.
Speak for yourself - i started using iTunes because it was on the shiny new mac I was given at work. I liked the interface so much I started buying the odd tune... now I have an iPod as well. Admittedly, I didn't *just* get the iPod because it works well with iTunes (I also like the design) but I liked and used iTunes long before I ever thought about buying an iPod.
Yes, but why does it have to be this way - all the TV companies want is to make money, so if they get it from us buying downloadable content, rather than from advertisers, who cares?
I think it's incredible how short-sighted these companies are being... there was a story a while ago about how Sony want to make an iTunes for movies. THIS is the future - give the pilot episodes away for free, use an iTunes-esque DRM, and make people pay a small fee for the actual episodes.

I bought the special edition - it came with some beautiful pieces of art "inspired by the game". Of course I've not done anything with them and they currently languish inside the box, but still... quite nice (especially since it was the same price as the normal edition)
They're responding to the GDC keynote by J Allard, who was saying that HD was basically the most important innovation/lure for NG consoles. They were disagreeing, pretty cogently I thought. If you read the article carefully, you'll see that the author a) owns a HD tv (which is pretty amazing in the UK) and b) is enthusiastic about how good it looks.
Hell, here's a quote from the end of the article "While you have to applaud Microsoft for trying to push on with forward-looking, boundary-breaking ideas that some of its rivals balk at, it's better to live in the realms of reality and note that the HD era has been with us for some time. This is not a new thing, and it will take far longer than people think to become part of the mainstream. For us Europeans, it's even less likely to take ahold with current HD broadcasting trials not even getting underway until next year, so don't go throwing away your crusty old CRT set just yet. You may not see the benefits for some time to come, and you'll save yourself a vast outlay in the process..."
Remember this is EURO gamer, and over here HD tvs aren't common.
The thing that has worked best for me is to get a wrist support, and to swap mouse hands every hour. I used to have terrible problems, and now I'm mostly okay.
When I was writing my thesis I had severe problems with my wrist(s - I swapped hands after my right wrist became too painful). I developed three ganglion cysts (big lump on the wrist - big enough that people would point at it and ask what it was) which had to be drained by the doctor.
I work way saner hours now, but if I start putting in hours like that again, I start getting twinges. I would pay a *lot* for something that stopped that happening again.
And for the record, since I was working (effectively) for myself malingering wouldn't really make much sense, and not only was it fucking painful, but I had a big offensive swelling on my wrist. Hopefully this would convince even the most harden cynic that something was wrong.
Hang on, one of the reason's you're excluding OSX is that it doesn't "run on most of the world's computers"? So, your definition of a good OS is basically that it runs on an intel-esque box?!? That seems a little arbitrary to me (but then I'm a recent OSX convert and possibly a bit protective... for what it's worth it's the best OS I've ever used - and I have at least dabbled with all flavours of windows, Solaris, Linux, AmigaOS etc.;-)
But I think the reason that I missed your point is that it's extremely rare in games that you're asked to kill anyone of the depth even of bambi's mum (I can't think of one game I've played like that). Normally the people you kill are 2-dimensional characters, like the bad guys in rambo films, or the evil henchmen from James Bond films (and as we all know, noone ever considers the families of evil henchmen;-) The only example I can think of (off the top of my head) of that sort of emotional attachment is ICO, and in that game your entire mission is to *protect* Yorda.
I think the thing that's so unreasonable about all this is, is the disparity between how films are treated and how games are treated, and how ignorant to law-makers seem to be.
"Bambi" - Spoiler warning! - when the hunters shoot Bambi's mom, many people watching the movie feel sad. Why do they feel sad? Anyone can see that she doesn't look like a real person.
So what? She acts, talks and behaves like a real person, which is much more important.
Never got your message... I guess you don't have my new number? Probably best in the circumstances. Incidentally I'm really starting to regret using my real name as my slashdot id!
I can see your point about Excel... I hadn't thought about doing some simple stuff to understand systematics. But see where you said that the stats stuff is awful? That what I was thinking of when I was shocked that a scientist would be using it, statistics being a big part of science and all.;-)
Oh, and I *really* do love OSX... not just fishing for mod points.;-)
Well it's a question of degree isn't it? If (for the sake of argument) Apple managed to make portable music players far far more attractive to the average joe, and transformed a small market into a collosal market, then you could describe that as a revolution, no?
Maybe they didn't do much different technically but if the effect they had was quadrupling (or more - no idea, I'm just arguing principles here) a market, then surely that's a revolution of some kind?
Exactly what (s)he said. I find it amazing/scary that anyone in science would use Excel as a primary tool (I am a physicist working at CERN myself... not that we have much to analyse right now;-)
Anyway, back to the main topic, I am a recent convert to OSX, and as an OS I love it (in a way that I find a little alarming)
When it comes to coding frankly, the Kate/Kdevelop is just *way* better than anything Xcode can do (even if Interface builder is truly lovely). We're trying to port our code to OSX now, so probably my perspective will change once OSX is really as usable as Linux (for us)...
But what it boils down to: OSX is the best OS I have ever used. It is simply wonderful... and even though I still miss a few tools/functionality the closeness to *NIX means that this isn't an issue (apart from the APPLE-C / CTRL-C mess that I sometimes get in when running X apps in OSX)
Bottom line: I cannot imagine ever buying a non-OSX machine again (and two years ago I'd have laughed in your face if you told me I'd ever say that;-)
Not that anyone outside of the US gives a flying fuck about UN resolutions.
PLEASE tell me you're joking!?!?! Somehow the concept of the US being the only defender of the UN (or its resolutions) is making me giggle and wince at the same time.
Sounds fine to me (I'm a brit) ;-)
Just jumble the words around : "In the city of York there was once a society of magicians."
If it helps at all, it's pretty archaic-sounding british english, probably done for stylistic effect
