No longer having to remake the broken wheel each time. Or it could lead to a bad side effect having a positive outcome like Viagra and Zyban. Both of these were not what was planned but had amazing results. Hell, penicillin saves millions and if I remember right, was a total mistake at the beginning.
Its not who is better then the other, it's which one is the biggest player in the market which will get the most recognition. All software can be hacked, even locked ones. Just have to find the weak link and have an interest to do so
Of the one where someone late at night while trying to sleep swears they hear voices, and can't ever get rid of these voices no matter how many times they move houses only to have the dentist find some metal in their teeth (or a fake metal tooth) that was picking up radio waves and thats what they were really hearing. Life imitating art?
Then either you A-Researched your ass off before EVERY purchase, B-designed your entire setup around Ubuntu from the start, probably going so far as to buy an Ubuntu system, or C- really should be playing the lotto more, because you sir are one lucky bastard.
As for #2, lets be honest folks: the GUIs in Linux suck. While they look good on the surface if you try sticking to the GUI and ONLY to the GUI in Linux you will quickly find yourself screwed, and I can prove it
I found the GUI on Ubuntu quite nice and easy. Works like Windows pretty much that there was no learning curve.
As for the computer I'm using it on, I'm running it on my old Acer 5920G laptop. Read up online on how to dual boot it since it had a seperate HD on it (read how to do that step by step from the desktop). Did that for about 2 months and released that for the 2 months I didn't even load Windows once so I just did a clean install which was a piece of cake. Only thing that doesn't work are the media/play dvd buttons, but never used those anyways
There is a chmod that will remove Bash from user access, yes? Do that. Remove Bash from your access for a single year. I'm willing to bet my last dollar that if you swore off CLI for a year you would have a broken machine in less than 6 months
And again, I'm going to look dumb... what is a chmod and a Bash?
chmod isn't explained on http://www.computerhope.com/unix/uchmod.htm well, and Bash isn't explained either on http://ss64.com/bash/. I'm not saying I've had no problems, but none that a quick 'How do I do x on Ubuntu' search on google hasn't fixed with cut and paste commands. I'm not trying to sound like I don't know computers, because I do since I grew up with them. But thing is I know Windows computers, and found that even though Linux is a completely different system, it's not hard (read that it was 10 years ago but that has been really changing). I also understand your argument that CLI really is the most powerful way to do things in Linux, but the same is for Windows with the Dos Prompt, and even Mac OS has it's command prompt (http://ss64.com/osx/) and both of these OS's can more powerfully handled when done through a command prompt and if there users learned how to master these, then it would be better for them. But like many computer things, just because it can be done and learned, doesn't mean it has to be.
/pulls up flame proof long johns/ It is JUST like how the Linux guys tie themselves into knots trying to claim Linux is 'ready for the masses' and when you point out average users are afraid of control panel and every Linux forum is filled with NOTHING but miles and miles of VERY complex CLI gibberish
Not to flame, but to be honest (and regardless what might get mentioned to me) I've been using Ubuntu Linux for about a year, have had no problems with it aside from one wireless USB stick giving issues and had no idea what CLI meant (googled it tbh). The average user doesn't need to use CLI to use Linux when talking about things like Ubuntu. Maybe 10 years ago. Have I touched the terminal? Sure, to cut and paste what was mentioned on the Ubuntu forums to help me, rarely know what they will do beyond that it will work though (DVD ripping had an issue due to US laws and Ubuntu being from the US.) And no, having to cut and paste easy step by step instructions doesn't scare people away. Is it ready for the masses? Not sure, don't see why not just have to get people off the mind set that it'll be a LONG up hill climb because it wasn't I found
You're partially right in that Apple does want people to upgrade to the current OS. But if their motives were as underhanded as you imply, it seems a bit odd they'd price Snow Leopard at $29.
Forces any 4+ year older Mac out of the way since they only started making Intel chips (required for 10.6, no PowerPC chips) in 2006. And thats if you didn't buy an older Mac off the shelf. While the $29 isn't much, it's still a forced upgrade
I'm not going to buy one. But being silent of the problems and keeping them only to myself is also not a solution either. In fact being silent is more likely to help the problem since it won't bring to light the problems
I have tried a bunch of eInk devices and they are complete junk. I have been waiting for a mainstream LCD-based electronic reader.
Its called a laptop. Most people here most likely are reading slashdot with them. They are also standard for desktops since few people still own a CRT screen.
Is this phone sold as a truly 'open' phone, and does it state in the fine print you may alter the software as you wish 'at your own risk' of course. Because if it does since Android is considered an open phone, then this is a violation of the products sold upon description and would now put it as false advertising. Anyone have any of these phone and can check if it does state anything along those lines?
iPhone on the other hand is a completely different beast and yes it is locked down platform mostly for the benefit of the users, so we don't have to worry if an application is safe to install and use.
I do love how the original Apple comerical from 1984 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m8_uQgnuG1Q claims that Apple with help make 1984 not be like 1984... yet locks down its hardware to run only its OS, their music players to only work with its iTunes software (the newer models aren't working as well if at all, and you can't re-flash the BIOS which happened with the 5th gen), and their iPhone which only allow you to use whatever software the Party... I mean company deems is ok for you to use. I also love the irony of the 'updated' commercial to show to woman now is wearing an iPod, re-writing history to make it 'pseudo' seem like it had always been, just like how books and magazines had been done in 1984...
As for "applications that Apple doesn't [sic] like", you must mean malware, trojans, and data theft mechanisms. If you want to run those by all means do so. You could save yourself some trouble and just write your date of birth and credit card numbers on a placard and hang that around your neck when you head to the mall.
NSMB Wii has sold 3 million units in Japan, where it launched on December 3; 3 million copies in Europe, where it launched November 20, and 4.5 million units in North America, where it launched November 15
Launching first in North America on Nov 15th, 5 days later released in Europe on Nov 20th and then 2 weeks later released in Japan on Dec 3rd. While it's normal for a japanese game to be released in North America first then followed by Europe, I'm surprised that it was released almost 3 weeks before being released in Japan. Or is this new Mario not made in Japan?
Sounds like a misguided effort. What I really want, is high-quality audio in smaller file sizes. It seems like they're creating a solution without a problem, or for the wrong problem.
Smaller file sizes would be a much better option then all these extra's hidden away in the file. I won't be surprised to see programs popping up to help strip all this extra information away since MP3 players seem to be getting smaller not larger. My old player was 80gigs, but when I needed to buy a new one last month I was hard pressed to find one larger then 32gigs, with many being around the 16gig size. And larger files means less music that can be taken with you so people will just try to strip this extra junk with them, since most mp3 players don't even have internet connection to take advantage of the updated information, only a computer or smartphone is able to.
I've asked a few people I know who use a Mac and it's not that the Apple one was a better choice for them, its that they think Apple products are the only ones who can do anything. I've had some tell me that Macs are more exprensive because they use the fastest parts with RAM having the fastest speed rating and you can't get RAM as fast or faster on anything but a Mac, and how Mac CPU's are the fastest with the biggest cache and nothing like these could ever been seen for at least 6 months later on a PC. Had another Mac user watch a homemade video on YouTube.com and pointed out that because it was using a camera and had to cut frames it could only have been done on a Mac since they have some video editing software on them and it was just impossible to do that from Windows. Other tell me the impossible like Macs aren't ever out-dated even after 10 years, no program bugs (was hard to tell the one musician friend of mine when his entire Mac wiped itself of a years worth of work was because of a Snow Leopard bug http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2142272 and no buying another couple hundred dollar attachment isnt a solution to a software glitch), there are no malware on a Mac like trojan (http://www.intego.com/news/ism0901.asp) that just impossible because its a Mac. And they refuse to see any other option, hell one screamed at me when I compared prices and hardware from Alienware and Apple and how the prices were cheaper on the Alienware and they parts were better then the Mac's. Amazing the power of a good marketing campaign. On a side note though, does anyone know if PC from I'm a Mac I'm a PC have any legal meaning or is it just a nod of the hat to those old Our Product vs Brand X? where Brand X has no legal weight and can be made to look bad on purpose? Because while I know they are suggesting and implying Windows, but since they aren't exactly saying Windows then in the eyes of the law I'm pretty sure it's not considered to be Windows, and the rare time they mention that Windows has X problem I've noticed that the Mac is very quiet and never says Macs don't suffer those problems too since that would be false advertising.
I wonder if that includes working at the MS store in malls or not. Sometimes working behind the scene's its a whole lot better then in the front. Company's like Microsoft are very large with MANY different types of job types to fill, from sales to coders and many things between and I'm guessing each one one have it's own ups and downs
Is even though the article says the person no longer works there, they could very well just be making it up just to cover their own butts and hide behind this answer to avoid a lawsuit regardless of what really has happened since the persons name is never listed 'due to privacy laws'. That means no way to make sure and also this would allow them to get another job just like this and do it again since 'due to privacy laws' it wouldn't be on file about them. Not to mention that the article also mentions this was the trainer showing others what to do and wasn't taken off the floor when complained about.
Makes him feel more like a 'real' person then someone who feels too high and mighty, like most celebs in a magazine. Also shows he has a sense of humour and didn't just snub them for asking that.
Didn't know about that private server. Also I realized that I don't think any PS3 game has been pirated since I'm not aware of any PS3 being hacked. The only system to not have been hacked (yet)
This could help people to find out if someone they know is playing WoW too much and need to make sure of this assumption. Since people who play too much tend to switch gear to better support the different challenges needed in game. Questioning is one thing, having proof is a lot more effective and all together better.
Then again, who wants to really watch what someone does on WoW. Here I'll show you more or less what it'll be:
"You put your right epic on, you take your right epic off, you put your left epic on and you shake it all about. You do the hokey-pokey and turn yourself around...
No longer having to remake the broken wheel each time. Or it could lead to a bad side effect having a positive outcome like Viagra and Zyban. Both of these were not what was planned but had amazing results. Hell, penicillin saves millions and if I remember right, was a total mistake at the beginning.
Because we all know Facebook and YouTube are full of impartial people who know anything about case law.
Just like here at /.
I wonder does this problem also crop up when using a VM session over time, or must Win7 be the top loaded OS?
Its not who is better then the other, it's which one is the biggest player in the market which will get the most recognition. All software can be hacked, even locked ones. Just have to find the weak link and have an interest to do so

98 good, WinME suck, XP SP2/3 good, Vista royal suck, Windows 7 good, so Windows 8 will be a hoover vac o' suck.
