I thought this was EXACTLY the worry that Facebook, Google, Wikimedia, etc. had. The worry was that a user posting "problem material" could get an entire site pulled without a court order. It looks like this is EXACTLY what happened here. (Though I am still unsure if a court order was made or not. It seems like there was no court order.)
SPECULATION: Jotform was using GoDaddy when this happened, and have decided to move every other domain they own off GoDaddy ASAP. The worry is that GoDaddy is following law enforcement requests without asking any questions. No idea if a court order or not. In either case, Jotform is having to heal with hundred thousands broken accounts because GoDaddy rolled over or because one judge somewhere saw only the law enforcement side of the case. The great majority of Jotform accounts are used for legitimate purposes. This is NOT like MegaUpload. You cannot make the argument that Jotform's goal is to break any law. They helped a great many businesses. It is pro big corporation actions like this that will hold our economy back, not the threat of a free internet as some politicians believe.
People who donate $15 or more will get a copy of the finished game. For all purposes it is a pre-order with the option of paying more if you want. He is perfectly open about his motives and his goals for the project. In fact, with the documentary being made about the development of the game, as it's being developed, you could say this is one of the most transparent development processes ever. Scam? Opposite! If you don't like the terms don't pay the $15+. No reason to start name calling.
Does anyone know much does it cost to get a game on Xbox Live and PSN? $2 million is quite a small budget for a game and I imagine cost is the sole reason of not releasing the game to more platforms.
Double Fine Adventure will be available for iOS, Android, and Linux.
Double Fine Adventure will also release a DRM-free version to backers of the project.
As the story submitter, I realize now that the title makes it sound like the iOS and Android versions of the game will be DRM-free. Sorry! I majored in mathematics, not english. >.<
As is the Wii. Which probably would make quite a nice platform for a DotT-style point-and-click adventure.
I could see this working awesomely on the Wii. I didn't mention the Wii because I don't have one and haven't used one for quite some time. I have heard people asking for a Wii version of the game so who knows? I have a feeling the main reason the consoles are being passed up is because of how much money it costs to get a game approved by Microsoft/Sony/Nintendo.
I *donated* to Double Fine because of Tim Schafer and Ron Gilbert's reputation for making great adventure games. I fully realize that new game developers would not have the same success on Kickstarter. There is a benefit to putting in the time and effort to build a reputation! I find that myself I have much more opportunities available to me now than I did at 18. I realize that is because others feel more comfortable gambling on me when I can show that gamble has paid off in the past.
Also, Kickstarter is not for investing money. And even the best investments can fail horribly. At least Double Fine promises an interesting documentary out of it!
As long as steam doesn't feel like baning you for some random reason or no reason at all.
The game mentioned in the grandparent would not be affected by a Steam ban. You can copy the game data files to another PC and run the game, no Steam required.
Even more so since Notch is effectively writing them a blank check for their next game, Psychonauts 2
I wish! However Notch has admitted he didn't realize how expensive the budget for Psychonauts was. It was $19 million. So while Notch wants to be a major investor to the tune of a few million dollars, he alone is not able to completely fund Psychonauts 2 by himself. I have no doubts that Double Fine can find creative ways to make up the difference though! ='p
I have a hard time believing that, for instance, Italy has a larger market for games than Brazil, Russia, India, or China.
I too wondered this. The only reason for EFIGS I can think of is that it must be easier to release the game for the EU market as a whole than it is to prepare releases for individual markets around the world. I don't know if this is for legal or regulation reasons. Perhaps Double Fine has more experience dealing with EFIGS than it does for Russian. E.g. they might not have anyone in the office that is fluent in Russian. Backers have offered to do translations to other languages themselves if they get access to all the text in the game.
If people today kept the same expectations for quality of day-to-day life, and harnessed all of that technology and productivity to save for retirement, hire better teachers, etc., it would be a different world. But people are lazy and like their toys.
Alas, I have to agree with you that this is where at least some of the production went. (Looking at real income rates however shows that richer people have benefited much more from the amazing increase in production.) So what can we do to change it? How can we encourage society to buy less TVs and pay for more teachers?
Isn't everything on an iPhone under DRM? I mean you can't transfer ownership or anything.
You are most likely correct. Tim's update doesn't say the iOS version specifically will be DRM-free, just that the game will have a DRM-free version available. Also, the game will be released for iOS. I tried to make a concise title that hit both these points but instead managed to add to the confusion. I regret that now and wish I could go back in time to correct myself.
The word "investor" is not used anywhere. They ask for backers or "donations" though most people who backed the project are thinking of it as a pre-order.
The title originally included "and Linux" but it got cut off for whatever reason. Slashdot could use a character limit in the title field of new submissions if this is a common issue.
I wrote that editorial. Parent's comment was good for a laugh. =)
Did you know that adventure games are more popular with girls than Call of Duty or Madden ever was? I know quite a few females, that aren't my left hand (correction: my RIGHT hand), that are excited about this game.
Double Fine Adventure will be available for iOS, Android, and Linux.

For those wondering why this question was even being asked, the last work was cut off for whatever reason. timothy cleaned it up within a couple of minutes of the story posting. =)
We know that a few people having all the resources doesn't work. Look to feudalism and the reason the Magna Carta was signed. We also know that everyone sharing resources doesn't work. Every large-scale attempt at communism fails in some way due to corruption and greed.
Thus, there must be something in between where we have some richer people and some poorer people. In an ideal society, how would resources end up being distributed? We have made absolutely awesome advances in technology and production in the past 50 years. Where did all this extra production go? Why are we having trouble funding schools and paying for basic infrastructure when we are producing more per capita than mankind ever has in all of history?
The OWS movement has a point, as do business owners and entrepreneurs that work very hard for their fortunes. Yet what we see in the media is cheerleading for one side or the other, without any discussion of the complex and boring details. Rhetoric sounds so much better in a 3 second sound bite.
When I bought Portal 2 for the PS3, it came with a Steam key for the PC version of the game. I then went out and bought 2 Xbox controllers (which work perfectly in Windows 7 as well) and hooked up my laptop to my TV.
So it is possible to get the best of both worlds. PC graphics with a console-style multiplayer experience.
This plant specifically made chemicals for Agent Orange. Yes they made herbicides too but production was done here with the specific intent to make chemical weapons. (Hint: The town's name is NITRO.) This gives the reader an idea how bad these chemicals are. They are bad enough for warfare. Considering we are a nation at war, it is good to be reminded of the collateral damage that war brings back home.
Your passage seems to imply defending one's homeland. That isn't even that evil. Plenty of times in the Bible, the nation of Israel is ordered to destroy other nations for not being Hebrew. Peronally, growing up I was reminded that truly devout Christians would stone to death children who did not respect their parents. Can we just admit that most large religions have had nasty shit done under the claim of "Righteousness"? (The Crusade's anyone?)
If someone has a stubborn and rebellious son who will not obey his father and mother, who does not heed them when they discipline him, then his father and his mother shall take hold of him and bring him out to the elders of his town at the gate of that place. They shall say to the elders of his town, “This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious. He will not obey us. He is a glutton and a drunkard.” Then all the men of the town shall stone him to death. So you shall purge the evil from your midst; and all Israel will hear, and be afraid. (Deut. 21:18-21)
I understand you are playing devil's advocate and thinking through this issue through other points of view (something to be commended). Please realize the following statement makes it seem like you stand idle or are uncaring about hateful speech. Bigotry should be denounced.
I don't advocate assaulting or discriminating against people because they are Muslim, but I absolutely understand why it's done.

Not sure about PSN, but I know we recently had a discussion about the cost of Xbox patches.
This makes me wonder how much it costs to get a game onto XBLA. Does anyone know?

I haven't tried. I do know that I can see all my Steam friends on my PS3, but all the Portal 2 multiplayer I've done so far has been split screen.
Alas, I have to agree with you that this is where at least some of the production went. The last word was "Linux". Tim Schafer had already let it be known that OSX and the PC (obviously) would be supported.
If you want to support DRM-free Linux development, please consider financially supporting the project!
Just wanted to say thanks for the videos!
