I got an older model G Tab on clearance for $200 and i couldn't be happier. Prices on tablets are dropping fast. In less than a year we will see a drop from $800 iPads to Amazon's $250 tablet. I thank HP for showing the industry the way forward.
Tablets are here to stay. If they're too expensive for you now, just wait another year.
Instead of attempting to teach these kids or getting their parents involved, we are familiarizing the kids with gettig arrested, courts, and the possibility of jail time. I fully expect to see these kids to revisit the judicial system as adults. Such measures should be reserved for extreme cases that truly need it. We shouldn't be giving the next generation practice runs at trials.
There's one other time where I missed HD cable. That was watching the tsunami hit Japan. Streaming footage via the internet just didn't match the 1080p feed on CNN HD.
Do you send pics or movies to friends from your phone? What about play multiplayer games with friends? Video chat? What about share music libraries? These are just the few things I could imagine. I'm sure there are many more applications I haven't thought of. These are also simple things that I've had problems with on my home computer because of heavy NATing. Don't curse my phone to the same fate!
Has anything been released that will not allow 1080p playback through component cables? If (when?) it's actually happening it would be nice to have a concrete example I can use to show the effects DRM has on citizens.
Mod parent up! His linked article is precisely a good example of level design done right. I also highly suggest listening to the commentary for Portal. A major goal of the first half of that game was to "train" the players but make it seem like the players learned it all on their own. All done purely with level design instead of some tutorial.
I believe this is due to a lack of time rather than a desire to keep a career. Someone who is established in his field does not have the time to review everything that all the new upstarts in the field will create. There has to be a way to pick and choose what to focus on, and for many it makes sense to focus on areas that already have a large body of evidence behind them, rather than every hypothesis that comes across one's desk.
I am not a fan of Glenn Beck, though many times I end up watching his show for the same reason car wrecks are fascinating. But I agree COMPLETELY with Glenn Beck on the TSA, which is hard for me to say. Glenn and I share a hatred of the TSA. Source.
The reason grandparent was modded down is because you can't compare Palin to a constitutional law professor. In fact, I almost do NOT want someone who's been tainted by the political system to become president. I definitely believe Obama is tainted, but to imply Obama and Palin's knowledge of government is equal is to completely miss the details.
Someone made a comment on a previous story about how this is "diplomacy". But how can a democracy work if the officials involved are all lying to the people? We need to work towards a government that doesn't lie to it's own citizens for fear of embarrassment and/or losing power. It is unfortunate that an evil person is taking advantage of a liar, but blame the specific politicians/liars involved, not Wikileaks!
This is not a black and white issue! Some privacy is required, some privacy is used to cover up transgressions. Can we agree that we don't need a webcam into Obama's bathroom while at the same time wanting to know what immoral activity the "rulers of the free world" are partaking in?
See also: regulations. Whenever I see someone argue completely for or completely against something without considering the devil in the details, all I see is a cheerleader rooting for their team.
It's not too hard to pull your cell phone out of your pocket for the entire second it takes to read a reply. Besides, many times I see a proctor doing their own work instead of keeping an eagle eye on the students 100% of the time.
I don't know enough details to decide if Wired is protecting a source (my first instinct) or if they are really holding back the press. I firmly believe that citizens deserve more privacy while governments need to be more open, and Manning sure has the deck stacked against him!
Since Slashdot doesn't RTFA. Teacher wrote the abstract. The educators transcribed the rest from what the kids said verbally. Diagrams were made by the kids. The teacher collected everything and you could say worked as Editor-in-Chief, Typesetter, etc. Both the kids and the educators are listed as authors.
This story has been tagged "idle" by Slashdot. That's an insult! What's wrong with our culture that even the geeks and nerds among us don't see education as important? These 8-10 year olds just had a better science lesson than most anything kids get today.
The best science class I ever had was in high school. My lab partner and I were given 2 test tubes with 2 types of bacteria. This was out of a possible 10 types. We were given 2 weeks to identify them and write a report on our methods. This was when I was 16! Not only did I learn a lot but that was just such a fucking cool assignment that I would consider it a much MUCH better experience than YEARS of mediocre science classes combined! Science was actually exciting, and I pray to Christ and the Buddha that these teachers get some respect soon before stupid takes over.
MasterCard and Visa charge a significant service fee to every merchant that accepts them. This in fact raises the cost of goods by several percent. Of course the trade off is that money can move around easily and quickly which would have a positive effect on the cost of the good. It has now reached a point where people are even asking what the purpose of cash is anymore. When everyone treats credit cards as the de facto standard of payment, the card companies are making money off every transaction that occurs. This is one reason why credit card companies would love businesses to start using credit cards. They can make money first off the merchant and then again off the customer.
The duopoly of MasterCard and Visa now have a lock on the market, and by working together can skim money off most consumer transactions while pushing all costs to the merchant. This is their prize for setting up and controlling the infrastructure that moves those electrons around. However, just because the card companies have the power to skim money off every transaction doesn't make it right. Consider for a moment, a percentage taken from *every* transaction made. What kind of effect on the economy would that have? And this cut isn't like taxes that pay for roads and schools. The goal is to make billions for just a few people. (I haven't even gotten to interest rates, fees, or the many other ways to squeeze money out of a consumer.)
For these reasons I stop by the ATM on my walk to work and pay with cash whenever I can. I also like knowing that the hard working businesses I support will get to keep a bit more of my cash. In fact, a few restaurants in my area have decided MasterCard and Visa's "vig" is too much and only take cash.
But perhaps the most important reason of all: My herb dealer doesn't take credit.
While Sodoku is usually played with a 9x9 board, any square number would work. 4x4, 16x16, I've even seen a 25x25 in a Sodoku book before. (Started it, but didn't want to spend that much free time finishing it.) Technically you could have a 1x1 board but there's not much fun in that!

The cynic in my thinks that the legal team wants a couple of easy wins under their belt and set a precedent for future disputes. Two educators working on a web site won't be able to stand up to Facebook's lawyers.
Why do you want to protect Mickey? The creator is dead. Mickey is part of our culture. No one should own part of our culture. Mickey Mouse should've been in the public domain a long time ago.
Exhibit A: Mickey Mouse. Mickey Mouse has been part of American CULTURE for generations. Anyone should be able to make new and interesting (maybe even really shitty) stories about Mickey Mouse. Don't tell me that a company owns the rights to Mickey Mouse, when the creator has been dead for a long time. THIS IS OUR CULTURE! Fuck anyone who tries to lock our culture up. This shit is public domain as far as I'm concerned. And no, I won't feel guilty for copying Jimi Hendrix, Elvis, and Beatles music. The people who lock it up for profit are the ones that should feel guilty!
totally looks like Aperture Science.

In other words: the real air gap you need to worry about is the one between your employees' ears.
Fact: It is impossible to guarantee zero errors from employees. People make mistakes.

You mean *gasp* Slashdot editors actually did something?!?!?!? O.O
MIND BLOWN
There are many Tea Partiers and people at Fox News who agree with you COMPELTELY on the TSA.
Glenn Beck agrees with you 100%.
